“Everyone goes around a little bit empty inside,” Luna was saying. “It’s nature. No one is truly happy all the time.”
Harry looked over from his seat in the recliner at the conversation that was going on by the fireplace.
Hermione was nodding in agreement. “Nothing lasts forever, but we all manage to go on. It’s life.”
A sound from the door made them all turn. Draco had returned from his walk in the park. All talk quieted for a moment until Draco slumped gracefully on the couch.
“Like I was saying, you’ll be faced with all sorts of problems and you’ll have to make compromises,” Hermione continued, laying a friendly hand on the arm of Terrence Higgs.
His eyebrows raised in understanding. “So what you’re saying is that everything is only for now?”
Luna nodded. “For now, we’re all here. We’re all happy…sort of.”
“For now we’re going to accept what we can’t avoid,” offered Hermione.
“For now, we’re each other’s comfort,” Draco said in a way that made Harry feel as though it were directed at him.
“Sex is only for now,” Harry countered.
“Voldemort is only for now,” Ron threw in from his station at the chess table, just before checkmating Neville.
“Even a smile only lasts a little while,” Neville said.
“You’re a poet and don’t know it, Neville!” Luna called out.
Draco, still not one to let something like that slip by, picked up where she left off. “Yeah, you’ve got sense and don’t show it, Longbottom.”
“Shove it, Malfoy,” Neville retorted, surprising even himself.
Hermione looked around and finally said, “Except for paying taxes and dying, everything is only for now.”
“And even certain death is open for debate in the wizarding world,” Ron countered.
Harry saw Draco eyeing him and shrugged a silent apology. Draco nodded and tossed his head towards the door. Sighing in relief, Harry let out an exaggerated yawn and excused himself, knowing that Draco would soon follow.
