How to Begin
Hermione flooed down to Severus’ dungeon chambers just after 10.00pm. She was determined to make a respectable showing in her NEWTs whatever else was on the horizon. Severus had said she was free to study in his quarters but seeing as her physical reaction to him was so strong, she had thought to get more work done alongside Ron and Harry. Of course, on reflection, she would have seen that that wasn’t a likely prospect in the current situation.
Harry was weighed down by the responsibility of the decision he now had to make. He was still undecided. Ron was devastated by the news of Percy’s treachery and had been going back and forth between morose silences and outbursts of tearfulness all day.
Since leaving his rooms that morning she had only seen Severus from a distance at meal times. He sat at the High Table looking down on the depleted Slytherin House table and not entering into conversation with any of his colleagues. She was making a conscious effort not to look at him too much, as only Order members were allowed to know of their relationship. The Order members sitting at table with her seemed to consider her love life a taboo subject, which was quite a relief.
He looked up from his pile of parchments as she came in and stood to greet her. She went straight into his arms and embraced him.
“Bad day?” he enquired.
“Not good. Ron and Harry are having such a hard time at the moment and while I couldn’t claim to miss any of the departed students, they have left quite a gap. How about you?”
“All my days are bad in one way or another. No crucio so far, but I gather Potter still hasn’t made his mind up.”
“No he hasn’t. He’s not talking to me about it at all.”
“He can’t dither much longer. For one thing it affects how long our little ruse is going to have to last.”
“I know. Do you still want to start the… well the ruse tonight?”
“I think it would be best to store a little something in my memory, just in case I’m called tonight.”
“What did you want to do?”
“Nothing too dramatic. Definitely not a sexual act at this stage otherwise we’ll have no room to manoeuvre. Remember he thinks our previous encounter was some time ago. We can convincingly spend a week or two working up to it. Have you any thoughts?”
“I think it should be somewhere else…your office or the classroom. As though you’d called me in to see you after classes… and then you could…”
“Molest you, Miss Granger?”
“Yes, or proposition me or… something and perhaps I could flirt with you or… tease you in some way.”
“I have never wanted to proposition or molest a student in my entire career.”
“I don’t quite know how to respond to that.”
“I seem to recall you propositioned me, Miss Granger,” he said, with a small quirk lifting the corner of his mouth.”
“It was for the greater good.”
“I would not change it.”
“Okay… we can be in your classroom… talking about…no…”
“You come to me in the classroom…I will ask you if you can spare some time to help me brew potions for Poppy. I will do something inappropriate. You will react … tell me you already have a lover … I will respond and you will give me reason to hope. Is that all right?”
“That will do. Should we do it now?”
“Yes, then we can go to bed.”
“Agreed!”
They went out through the storeroom into the classroom. Severus sat down at his desk with a basket of parchments and Hermione positioned herself outside the classroom door. She took at deep breath and knocked at the door. She heard his acknowledgment and entered. She walked over to the desk while he stood and leaned against it.
“You wanted to see me sir?”
“Indeed I did, Miss Granger,”
This was unsettling. It felt almost as if she’d stepped back into the previous week. Stepped back the time before she had seen him as a lover.
“Is there a problem Professor?” she asked.
“Not as such… I am finding myself a little stretched at the moment. I wondered if I might prevail upon you to assist me in brewing some potions for Madam Pomfrey?”
“I don’t know sir. I’m studying for my NEWTs and…”she cut off with a very genuine shriek as he grabbed her by one arm and one breast. She squirmed out of his grasp. “What…” she began.
“You were not always averse to my touch, Miss Granger,” he said arrogantly. “I seem to remember you liked it.”
“I thought you’d had enough.”
“Maybe I was hasty.”
“Maybe I’ve moved on,” she said, wondering frantically how she could try to turn this into flirtation.
“Maybe you need to think about things very carefully. Think about what might be to your advantage.”
“My advantage?”
“There’s so much I could teach you…” he said seductively. He stepped up to her again and cupped her breast. She didn’t demur this time. Instead she smiled slowly and…”
“OH MY GOD!!! You sick bastard!”
The pair sprang apart guiltily and turned to face the intruder. It was Ron.
“Ron it’s not what it looks like,” said Hermione.
“What’s he doing to you Hermione?”
“Miss Granger, go to bed. I will join you later. Weasley, why are you here at this time of night?”
“Don’t start bloody questioning me! What are you doing?”
Hermione hovered inside the storeroom, waiting to see how Severus handled the situation.
“You were at the meeting yesterday Weasley. You should already know.”
“What?”
“Hermione and I are lovers.”
“That’s what she thinks but that didn’t look like love to me!”
“The Dark Lord requested that I seduce Miss Granger.”
“What?”
“Sit down Weasley. I don’t think you understood the implications of what was said about us yesterday at the meeting.”
He sighed at the blank look on Weasley’s face.
“I will fill you in. Sit!”
This time Ron sat.
“Hermione was in danger from the Dark Lord because he wanted to use her blood to re-create Merlin’s potion. She gave me the blood to make the potion for Harry and we made an agreement that I would be the one to take her virginity. I did so and we both enjoyed it and decided that we wish to have a relationship. Are you with me so far?”
“Yes! But….”
“Let me finish. I was summoned by my Lord and I showed him memories of my time with Miss Granger to convince him that I had an affair with her some time ago and that he had been misinformed. He then decided that I had to work on Hermione in order to get him information about Potter. Now the Dark Lord can see thoughts in the same way that I can, so I have to show him memories that he wants to see. He can’t know tha are are already lovers, so Hermione and I have to stage things for me to show him. That is what you walked in on.”
“So you’re not manipulating her?”
“No. I hold her in great regard. Why are you here?”
“I came to see if I could talk to you about Percy.”
“There is no doubt that it was him and I had to ensure that the Order knew.”
“That’s not what I wanted to ask. I wanted to know why he’s done it.”
“I didn’t speak to him and I don’t expect to. He’s your brother. Have you no idea?”
“He’s always been a prat… but I don’t see how anyone could want to serve Voldemort.”
“The Dark Lord can be very persuasive.”
“How?”
“He gives you the impression that you are valuable to him. He pushes you to imagine how rewarding your long term future will be, how good society will be when he oversees it. By the time you truly understand what you are expected to do and that you are little more than a slave… it’s too late.”
“You stopped though.”
“I did… but I am the only one now living that did and that is because I practice Occlumency. If your brother recants he will die for it. What would you prefer? A living Death Eater or a dead traitor?”
“You can’t help but twist the knife can you?”
“I will not offer false comfort. I have no interest in the state of your emotions. If you choose to broadcast them, don’t expect me to be interested.”
“What does Hermione see in you?”
“That is none of your business. You can have your friendship with her during the day but when she comes to me after curfew she is mine.”
“I care about Hermione. I don’t want her to get hurt.”
“Perhaps you be ought to be speaking to Potter,” he said bitterly.
“What do you mean?”
“The Dark Lord expects me to corrupt Miss Granger until she betrays Potter. We have begun the pretence. If I cannot satisfy him, I will die and she will be his target. The Order will lose its spy, which ruins any chance of ever seg a g a trap like this again. The sooner the conflict, the safer we will all be. Take that back to Potter and see if it helps him to make up his mind. Now Weasley I would like some privacy.”
Ron got up and left. Hermione stepped out of the storeroom.
“I thought I told you to go to bed woman!” he said without turning to look at her.
“I was worried.”
“I’m sure nothing I said made you worry any less.”
“It was all true though,” she said, sliding her arms around him.
“Don’t,” he said disengaging himself. “I can’t be your lover in here… It’s too confusing. In here I’m your teacher and it’s a setting for the false memories. Let me take you through and we can be ourselves in there, at least until morning.”
“That would for the best.”
He allowed her to lead the way.
