\"And it’s hard to love,
There’s so much to hate,
Hanging on to hope,
When there is no hope to speak of,
And the wounded skies above,
Say it’s much too late
Well maybe we should all be praying for time\"
Praying for time – George Michael
\"They are fighting again Albus.\" Sighed Minerva, coming into the headmaster’s office and sitting down at the small table by the window. Dumbledore handed her the cup of tea he had just poured and made himself another one.
\"I only went down there to see if Hermione wanted to join me for tea. I walked into the classroom and I could hear her shouting at him. Then heard what sounded like a slap, so I got out of there as fast as I could.\"
She looked over at her companion.
\"It’s worse this time Albus, they could genuinely hurt each other.\"
He smiled sadly at her, \"They already do, my Love, but I need them together on this.\"
They sat in silence for a moment, both thinking about the two brilliant people who could do amazing things together, if they could just see past their anger.
\"They are going to be impossible to convince, judging by the way they were just antagonizing each other. I don’t envy you when they find out what you want them to do.\"
Dumbledore chuckled, \"Should I start hiding all my breakables, do you think?\"
Minerva stood and placed a kiss on Dumbledore’s cheek \"When are you going to ask them, Albus?\"
\"Well, sooner rather than later, despite Severus’s efforts we still don’t really know how much time we have before Voldemort attacks the school, why? Want to give an old man some moral support?\" He joked.
\"No.\" She replied opening the door to the office, a smile breaking out on the usually stern face \"I just wanted to make sure I was out of the castle that day.\"
~*~*~
Severus was pacing the length of his sitting room. He knew he had instigated the fight that afternoon. He couldn’t help it, she infuriated him so much and he had held his tongue all week.
After she had hit him and stormed out, he had sat in his office for a long time, just thinking about her. He knew she had not realized that the rest of the order were aware of her renegade actions regarding the Death eaters, the same way that she did not know that he understood why she was doing it. She had no grand plan, she was not evil. She did it for one reason --
Revenge, plain and simple.
They had killed her parents so she was killing them. An eye for an eye. The only problem with revenge was, it was never enough, and it was never going to bring them back (Is it my fault she’s like this?) He’d thought to himself that afternoon (After all, she learnt all she needed to know about revenge from me, did I make her like this?) He pushed the thoughts away. He had enough guilt for two lifetimes. There was no way he was going to take the blame for her as well.
She had been nowhere to be seen at dinner, although her team was there as usual. What was he doing still thinking about her? He knew the end of the war was coming, one way or the other and he felt like he was running out of time. He poured himself a generous shot of whiskey, but before the first drop could touch his lips he felt his left forearm start to burn \"No rest for the wicked.\" He said resignedly to the empty room as he grabbed his robes, mask and left.
*~*~*~
Hermione was sitting at her window, looking out at the clear night sky when she saw something out of the corner of her eye. Snape. She knew where he was going by the mask he carried, which was glinting in the moonlight.
He had been a complete bastard to her that afternoon. That was not the way she would have chosen to find out that everyone knew what she had been doing outside ‘office hours’ but then, he knew that.
She had passed her auror training with flying colors, but found the work boring. There was a lot of paperwork to do, a lot of sitting around on stakeouts. So she had decided to take matters into her own hands. They had to pay for what they had done.
She looked at her watch. 8.05pm. Her team’s nightly patrols didn’t start until after 10.00pm, when all the students were in bed.
She left her room and walked up into the main part of the castle, and then up again towards Gryffindor tower, half smiling at students as they passed, until she reached McGonagall’s office.
She rapped on the door and the matriarchal professor welcomed her in.
\"Would you like some hot chocolate Hermione?\" She asked, gesturing to her former student to sit in one of the comfy chairs by the fire.
\"Please Professor.\"
\"Oh Hermione, I think we can do away with the stuffy titles when the students are not around, don’t you?\"
Hermione smiled and took her chocolate, watching McGonagall get comfortable in the opposite chair.
\"I was going to ask you to join me earlier for some tea and chat but you were..um busy with other things when I came to find you.\"
Hermione frowned. \"What things? My last classes ended at 2.30.\"
Minerva looked over her mug at Hermione. \"O.k. you were busy slapping Severus round the face by the sound of it\"
\"Oh.\" Hermione said, and in a sulky voice. \"Well, he started it.\"
They both looked at each other and burst into fits of giggles. \"I don’t doubt it for a minute my dear, he hasn’t got any easier to be around since you left.\"
They were both quite for a minute and then Hermione said, \"I just saw him, outside, he was sprinting across the grounds like a herd of Hippogriffs were after him.\"
Minerva looked worried, \"He’s been summoned again. That’s the fifth time this week He’s not going to make it through to the end of the school year at this rate, a couple more rounds of the Cruatius curse will damn near finish him off.\"
Hermione was surprised by the fear and sorrow in the old woman’s voice. \"Oh come on Minerva, he’s still treated as one of Voldemort’s right hand men isn’t he?\"
Minerva was staring into the fire. \"I wish that were so child. He is barely trusted these days, and they torture him for fun on a regular basis, but he still keeps going, every time. I honestly don’t think he has a lot of time left and there’s nothing we can do about.\"
She smiled sadly at the look of horror, plain to see on the younger woman’s face. \"I know how you feel dear, but think yourself lucky that you have the luxury of hating him as much as you do. It is so much worse for those of us who know what a great man he really is, who love him and consider him family.\"
They sat silently for a long time, each lost in their own thoughts. Finally, when Hermione could not stand the mixed feelings and veiled accusations running wild in her head anymore. She bade the deputy headmistress goodnight.
She went directly to her rooms, opened the bottle of vodka she had found in the well-stocked drinks cabinet in her rooms and before long was passed out on the bed.
