Chapter Eight:

Briskly, I knock on the door of my boy's suite, rapping my knuckles across the hard surface. After a few knocks the door is thrust open, my boy eying the late night intruder with an irritated look on his face. However, once he sees that it is me the look quickly morphs into one of confusion.

"Oh, Draco! What are you doing here so late? Isn't it past curfew?"

Ignoring my boy's questions I step into the suite. Harry closes the door behind me as I make myself comfortable on the suede sofa. "Nice pajamas you got on," I say, eying Harry's cotton pajamas. If it wasn't for the snakes scattered on the dark green fabric then I would have abhorred such pajamas, after all, they aren't silk.

Harry shrugs his shoulders as he settles across from me one a matching love seat. "I like snakes," Harry says in response to my earlier comment.

I blinked at the simple statement, never expecting it to come from the mouth of a Gryffindor. I frown slightly, wondering if my mark has already started taking effect, but it was impossible. I hadn't bedded the boy yet, and wouldn't for at least a few years to come. The mark was just a preliminary to our future union, and until our union is consummate then the mark should have almost no effect on anything unless it was concerning his feelings for me.

"Draco," Harry says softly, waking me from my thoughts. "Why are you hear?"

"I've wanted to give this to you for a while. Ever since we first met at Madame Malkin's and you told me you had just turned eleven."

My boy looks startled as I give him the black velvet box. When he opens it his breath hitches and he stares wide eyed at the gift resting innocently inside. "Dr--Draco, what?"

"Shh," I say, silencing Harry's protests as I stand up from my seated position. I walk around the back of the love seat until I'm right behind my boy. I take the platinum necklace from the box before fastening it around my boy's neck. Softly I kiss my boy's cheek as tears leak out of his eyes. "Happy birthday, Harry."

Harry sniffles for a few minutes, trying to stop his tears. Though I am slightly taken aback by the tears they seem not to be tears of pain though that doesn't stop me from wiping them away. Finally when my boy's tears stop he turns himself around on the sofa, flinging his arms over my shoulders, hugging me close.

"Thank you, Draco. Thank you. I've never gotten a birthday gift before."

I frown slightly at those softly whispered words but shrug them off. "Harry," I say, getting the boy's attention. "This gift is a magical one. In order for it to be complete you need to freely give blood."

Harry draws back from me in confusion. "What?"

Silently I pick up the chain, raising it before my boy's eyes. Dangling from the end of the chain was a dragon and a snake intertwined and there was also a diamond and emerald ring resting next to the dragon-snake pendent. "Just one drop, Harry. I know a spell you can use so it won't hurt. One drop on the pendent."

Harry nods though I can tell the boy is confused. I walk him through the quick process and when it is completed I lower the chain back to my boy's chest. "Keep the chain on at all times. Understand, Harry?"

My boy nods as he closes his fist around the ring and pendent.

"Keep it under you clothes, Harry. Your shirt and your school robes."

Again my boy nods and as if on cue he pulls the chain up, releasing it under his pajama top. I get up to leave as it is now extremely late and I will need all my wits for the first day of Hogwarts. However, before I reach the door my boy stops me.

"Draco, I...uh, I mean! Um, can you stay with me tonight? I've never been in a room this big before. And I'm kinda, well...scared."

Sharply I turn back around to look at Harry as he fidgets, head tilted slightly down, bright green eyes looking at my imploringly. I smile at Harry, forcing it to remain a smile and not morph into the smirk that it wanted to be. I want to reassure the boy, not scare him.

"Of course, Harry. I'll stay with you as many nights as you want me to."

Harry lets out a sigh of relief before leading me to his bedroom. "Um, there's only one bed but it's big and I'm not too large so you can sleep on one side and I'll stay on the other. I'm not a wild sleeper, I usually stay to one side, so..." Clearly my boy is nervous as he rambles on and I smile a true smile this time at the undeniably adorable behavior.

"Shh, Harry, it's OK. If somehow you end up on my side of the bed in the morning I'm not going to be angry," I say as I glide towards the bed seductively. I sprawl myself across the bed in a seemingly random manner but what's really more of a well thought out pose. As I eye Harry his cheeks are flushed the usual cherry red.

"Are you going to stand there all night, or are you going to get settled in? We do have classes in the morning and one should be sufficiently rested."

At the sound of my voice my boy is once again reanimated as he quickly shuffles to the bed, climbing beneath the covers. He turns his back to me, curling himself into a small ball at the corner of the bed. I sigh as I get under the covers, turning to face my boy's back. I wait a few minutes before speaking again.

"Harry?"

No answer.

I smirk as I snuggle into the boy's back, wrapping my arms around his torso. I can feel his chest rising and falling rhythmically as he unknowingly snuggles closer to my warmth. I drag him over to my side of the bed, being sure not to wake the boy. In the morning I'm sure he'll believe that he came over to my side sometime during the night. Though with that chain around his neck and with my mark branded on his skin, he'll soon be seeking my company on his own accord.
