Sacrifice
Sacrifice
Harry was at a total loss at whom to speak to next. In a way he was still trying to digest the information he had found out, still in disbelief that Hermione would sacrifice everything in order to protect him. The memory he had seen had cut off abruptly, leaving him to wonder just what he didn’t learn from that meeting. There was only one person he could ask.
He went to the dungeons and found that Hermione wasn’t in. But then neither was Snape. So that was some good news. He ended up going over to the quidditch pitch, hoping to be able to talk to Ron about why the aurors were so angry with him as was his brother Bill. But when he got there he was shocked to see Hermione sitting on the green with her face tilted up to the cloud covered sky.
“It’s freezing out here,” she said quietly. “But there’s still some warmth to be had.” She opened her eyes and looked over to him. “Hi, Harry.”
Snape walked past him and went over to Hermione. He rested his hand on her shoulder, looking over to the younger wizard. “Mr. Potter.”
“Why didn’t you tell me that Dumbledore told you to be my bodyguard?” Harry asked sounding bitter.
“I took a wizard’s oath,” she whispered. “It was my duty to the wizarding world he said. I was honor bound to do it he said. And I like a swollen headed idiot of an idealist bought it hook, line, and sinker.”
“What are those things?” Severus asked.
“It is for muggle fishing, luv,” she murmured, rubbing his hand that rested on her shoulder absently. “Does it matter anymore, Harry?”
“You risked your life…” Hermione began to laugh bitterly.
“Risked it?” She stood up and went over to him. “I gave up my life for you!” She tried to calm herself, but failed as she sobbed, “And for what, I ask?” She looked over to Snape whose face was now as hard as stone as he stood there watching his wife. “You are the only good that ever came out of it, Severus.” She went over to him, her hand rubbing his chest over his heart. “Never you doubt that.”
Harry was taken aback when Snape’s face crumbled as he pulled her roughly to himself as he pressed his forehead to hers. He whispered, “Mine.”
She closed her eyes, her arms going around his chest. “My Severus.”
The two walked off, leaving Harry standing on the pitch wondering just how the two became as they were. And just why was it, Harry thought, that Snape was so upset by what she had said about giving up her life for him.
It had been just by chance that Harry ran into Moody on his way to the lecture he was giving on aurors and the training involved. The thought occurred to Harry that the older wizard would know more than his fair share of information about Hermione and that he could tell him more.
“Come with me,” Moody told him. “You can ask me what you want on the way over to the astronomy tower.” He muttered a curse. “I would give good money to have someone else climb the stairs for me.” His magical eye shot his way and back to where he was walking. “Well, out with it.”
“I’ve been finding out about Hermione…” Moody stopped in his tracks and stared at him. “I started looking into memories. I’ve been trying to find out why she killed Lupin.”
Moody sucked at his lower lip a moment before asking, “And what have you found out so far?”
“Kingsley hates me, Bill isn’t that far behind him, and Hermione was my bodyguard. Not much other than that, Moody.”
The other man nodded as he said, “I don’t much like you either, but that’s not here nor there.”
“Why?”
“Because you accused her of murder!” he snapped. “With no evidence, nothing!” his gnarled finger poked his chest hard. “We taught you better!” But then he stepped back. “You want to know why they hate you?”
“That would be helpful.”
“Are you sure you want to know the truth?” he asked cryptically.
“Positive.”
With a curt nod and a follow me, he began to walk in the opposite direction that he had been heading in. Harry followed in silence down to the dungeons to Snape’s rooms. He gave the password and waited. The door open and the two slipped into the rooms. Moody stood for a second, listening to the muted noises that came from the other room.
“We have to wait a moment,” Moody whispered. There was a loud pleasure filled cry followed by a dense silence. “Now.” He pulled him along to the bedroom, slamming the door open.
Hermione’s head snapped around with her hair wild around her pale face. Her eyes were as black as the night sky without stars. Harry gasped at the sight of the blood dripping down her chin. He looked down, expecting to see Snape there, but was shocked to see Kingsley lying naked with a bite wound marring his shoulder.
Harry looked back to Hermione, whose eyes had changed back to normal. “You’re…”
“Vampires, Mr. Potter?” Snape stated as he slammed the door shut behind him. “Why yes, we are just that.”
