Remus was pissed. He knew something would happen, but nothing like this. He stormed into the Gryffindor common room and looked around, rage clear in his eyes. “Have you seen Sirius?” He asked a third year boy, who just pointed up the stairs to the dormitories. Remus didn’t say anything instead he flew up the steps and threw the door open. There sat Sirius on his bed acting as if nothing special had happened, though his hand was wrapped up.
“What the fuck did you do to her?” Remus yelled crossing the room in four large steps.
“What are you talking about?” Sirius asked looking up at his friend from under his bangs.
Peter was sitting on his bed, and he jumped when Remus came running in. He was certainly mad about something. “Remus calm down,” he squeaked.
“Keep out of this Peter,” Remus said before turning around to Sirius once again. “You know exactly what I am talking about, what the hell did you do to Lily?”
“I didn’t do a damn thing, the bitch was the one who bit me,” Sirius said holding up his hand and shaking it a bit to show a drop of blood that came through his white bandage.
“Take that back,” Remus said looming over Sirius’ bed.
“No, get the hell away from me Remus,” Sirius said standing up to match the boys’ height.
“Guys…” Peter said starting to get worried. Normally it was James and Sirius who fought like this after a Quidditch match. Remus was always the calm one. He looked around quickly for James, but saw he was not there, and no one else was coming to break this up.
“No, what did you fucking do?” Remus asked as he pushed Sirius rather hard.
“We just fooled around a bit, what are you jealous?” Sirius asked shoving Remus back.
“I can’t fucking believe you Sirius. You know how fragile she is,” Remus said exasperated. “Don’t you have enough whores to go to?”
“She liked it when I was kissing her, and grabbing her breast, but she flipped as my hand touched her pussy, fucking prude” Sirius said with a snarky attitude. He knew it was going to piss Remus off.
“You’re a real piece of fucking work,” Remus said, and Sirius shoved him so hard he stumbled. That was it. Remus cocked back, and his fist connected with the side of Sirius’ face.
“You bastard,” Sirius bellowed putting his hand to his lip which was bleeding and already starting to swell. If Remus wanted a fight that was what he was going to get, he threw a punch knocking the wind out of Remus, and then hit him in the nose, enjoying the loud crunching sound. When he pulled his hand back there was blood.
“Fuck,” Remus said. He was already weak with fatigue but it was too late now. Adrenaline was pumping, he tackled Sirius, and they collided with a traveling trunk, and Sirius’ head connected hard.
“Guys stop!” Peter said getting up off the bed, and tried to pull them apart, but his only reward was a fist to the eye. “Shit,” he yelled backing up and holding the smarting spot.
“Get the fuck off me,” Sirius yelled trying to throw Remus off. He was not used to fighting someone his height, James was taller, but not as muscular as him.
Remus didn’t respond instead he whaled hard on his face two times, before Sirius shoved him off, and punched him back.
James was walking up the steps when he heard a muffled yell. He arched an eyebrow, and jogged up the steps when he heard a commotion going on, on the other side of the door. James threw it open to find a very interesting scene, which caused him to freeze for a second. Sirius and Remus were fighting, there was blood on the floor, and on a traveling trunk, and Peter was nursing a swelling eye as he sat on his bed.
“Break it up,” James said running over, and pulling Remus off of Sirius. Even though he was on top, it was obvious Sirius still had the upper hand in the fight. James dodged a flying fist before finally yanking Remus away, while Peter scrambled, and attempted to hold Sirius back.
“Can someone explain what the hell is going on?” James asked, his chest heaving after that struggle.
“Why don’t you ask him,” Remus said spitting slightly as blood ran down his chin from his nose and mouth.
James turned to Sirius, utterly confused. Remus never got into fights not even verbal ones.
“He is just pissed because I got her first,” Sirius said and laughed at Remus and James reactions. “Don’t try to play dumb. You have loved her since you were fifteen Remus, you are just too shy, so you played best friend.”
“Fuck off,” Remus spat, losing his footing a bit. “She is my friend, I am protecting her. You’re right I do love her, but as a friend.”
“Okay someone please explain,” James said stressing please. He looked at Peter who just looked away. “Peter tell me because no one else will.”
“Fine I will tell you,” Sirius said getting up to sit on the bed. “Lily and I were practicing. And I wanted to fool around. She was alright until I moved to her pussy, and she panicked and bit me.”
“You son of a bitch,” James said glaring at Sirius. How could he do this?
‘”I just jumped on the opportunity,” Sirius said with a shrug.
“You are sick,” James said helping Remus to the bed, he could feel him getting weaker.
“Fuck off Prongs, you can go without me tonight,” Sirius said looking at the three other boys before moving to head out the door.
“Fine,” James said defiantly before walking quickly out of the room, watching Sirius go down the stairs for a moment before going up to his and Lily’s shared common room area.
He walked up to the door out of breath, and wiped his hand on his cloak to get rid of the bit of blood. “Lily,” James said quietly knocking on the door.
“Go away,” Lily called as she sat on her bed, holding her pillow tightly. She had changed into sweats and a t-shirt, and was staring out the window.
“Lily please,” James said knocking on it again.
“Have you come here to defend Sirius?” Lily snapped before wiping her eyes as fresh tears spilled over.
“No…I came here to make sure you were alright,” James said quietly staring at the door. She didn’t answer, but he stood there anyways for another second. He heard shuffling in the room, and the click of the lock.
“Where’s Remus?” Lily asked opening the door only a crack.
James looked at her, and felt his heart break a little. Her eyes were red and puffy from crying, and he could see the hurt in her eyes.
“He is in his room…he and Sirius got into a fight,” James said quietly looking at her. “Do you want to go to the hospital wing? Or to Dumbledore?”
“He told you didn’t he?” Lily asked feeling ashamed and retreated back a bit.
“Only a little bit,” James lied not wanting her to feel exposed.
“No I don’t want to go, at least not now,” Lily said quietly staring at the floor.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” James asked her, but she did not answer, so he continued. “If you need me, I’ll be in my room, or you can write me an owl if I’m not there alright?” James said looking her directly in the eyes. “Even if you just want to talk, or just want someone to sit with you don’t hesitate.”
“Thank you James,” Lily said honestly as she looked at him.
There was nothing more to say really, so James backed up a bit. “Anything at all,” he said quietly before walking back down the few steps. He watched her shut the door before turning and going to sit in his room. He had about an hour until they needed to get Remus to the shrieking shack. Tonight was going to be difficult doing it one man short, but he couldn’t let Remus down.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lily stayed in her room for the night, thinking of everything that had happened in the past two hours. She couldn’t believe she had let herself get into that situation, or let it get as far as it did. Rain began to fall gently against the window, and Lily walked over to sit in the large plush seat built into it. “I know how you feel,” Lily said staring at the sky. The moon was full and she looked around the brightly lit grounds, though it kept slipping into darkness as clouds passed the moon over.
She was watching the whomping willow sway in the wind when she saw a group of three walking on the grounds. Lily turned her attention to them, when the grounds fell dark once again. Curious she pressed her nose a bit closer to the glass, but when the grounds were lit up again, the group was gone.
“Must have been my eyes,” Lily muttered to herself before turning to look at the moon.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Come on Remus,” James said dragging his friend along as Peter ran ahead to push the secret knot in the tree to make it stop moving, and to open the door. “It’s not much further,” he insisted shoving his friend through the door.
“I don’t think…” Remus said before doubling over in pain letting out a sound that was a mix of a howl, and a scream of agony.
“PETER! HELP!” James yelled as he literally dragged Remus towards the door opening. The breaks in the clouds were leaving Remus in limbo, but he was close to fully changing. “We need to at least get him in halfway down the path,” James said throwing his friend through the door.
Peter grabbed Remus’ shoulders and began to drag him, as James pushed. He yelped slightly as Remus’ hands dug into his shoulders from the pain.
“Just get me there…” Remus panted before dropping his chin to his chest, biting his lip to hold back a yell.
“Almost there,” James said looking up the path. He could see the light from the moon seeping through the cracks in the door. Peter kicked the door open, and quickly changed back into a rat to get out of Remus’ way.
Remus fell to the ground, and his body made an awful tearing sound as his hands stretched to form claws, his face grew outwards, and his body’s height doubled.
James sealed the door they just came through, and took a deep breath before changing into a stag. He pawed at the ground nervously as he watched Remus change. It was going to be trying with Remus going after him all night, but he knew, well hoped, he would make it through the night relatively unscathed.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“My room,” James said as he dragged his feet down the corridor towards Gryffindor tower. The halls were empty as the sun began to rise outside. They only had two hours until breakfast, and classes. James was sure he was going to skip the day. Remus’ anger in human form had transferred into his werewolf stage, and James took the brunt of it, though Peter had been kicked a few times, and a shelving unit had fallen on him as well.
“I got it from here go to bed,” James said to Peter as James opened his bedroom door. He decided to give Remus his room since he and Sirius had fought already, the last thing anyone needed was another fight to break out.
“See you later,” Peter mumbled through his fat lip, to match his black eye from the fight earlier.
“Right,” James said before helping the barely conscious Remus into his bed. James cleaned Remus’ face up a bit, and removed his blood soaked shirt before going to clean himself up a bit.
Remus was out by the time James emerged from his bathroom. He grabbed an unused pillow, his afghan from the foot of the bed, and headed to his and Lily’s shared common room.
“Nothing like a couch to sleep on, in a cold room,” James muttered as he removed his shirt, and collapsed into the sofa. It was actually pretty comfy, and James used his wand to provoke the dying fire to a roar, and fell asleep soon afterwards.
