The Rise of a Snake
The Rise of a Snake
A worn brown leather chair sits in front of a crackling fire. The room around it was rather with the only light coming from two windows towards the back of the room whose drapes had been so moth eaten that the ripped and fell to the floor. The only things in the room were that brown leather chair, a small worn wooden table with only one chair, and on one of the walls was a large terrarium with a log sticking out of the top. Inside was a large dark green snake, coiled up and sleeping soundly.
A moan that resembled more of a hiss had come from the chair. A young man sat there with his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands. He was so deep in though that he hadn’t realized that there was hair falling from his fingers as he massaged his head.
Inside the terrarium the snake began to stir. The young man had not noticed its incessant hissing as it crawled up the log protruding from the tank and down the legs of the stand and onto the floor. He was still deep in thought as the snake had made its way across the room and over to him and hadn’t notice its presence until the snake stuck its head up between his legs and into his face, hissing at him.
“I am sorry my pet. I was lost, deep, into the cavities of my mind. No intention was meant by my ignorance.” He said as he picked up his head up out of his hands, taking two tuffs of hair in his hands. The amount of hair in his hands was astonishing and he wondering why this was happening. He turned his attention to the snake in front of him again as it began to hiss in a pattern of sorts. He placed his head back in his hands as he listened to the hissing as it went on.
Suddenly he shot his head up, taking more hair with it, and looked straight into the snake’s eyes. “Brand Them? Give them a mark to let everyone know they belong to me?” The hissing went one and the young man’s eyebrow went up in interest. “Enchant it to make them able to feel my presence? Why I didn’t know you had such a devious mind, my pet?” He stood up and walked to the hearth, throwing handfuls of hair into the fire. “With the enchantment they would be at my beckoning call.” The snake slithered towards her master’s feet and began to hiss at him. He looked down at her and swept her into his arm and cradling and stoking her lovingly. “You are so correct my pet. I would be lost without you by my side.” He held the snakes head in his hand and craned his head over her and kissed the top of her scaled head.

Outside one of the two windows towards the rear of the room, a small pudgy boy with a rodent like appearance stood watching the whole scene unfold. He could hear everything that was going on in the house but could not comprehend a word though. All he could hear was hissing sounds coming from both the man and the snake. He saw that each time the man had run his fingers through his hair he would pull more and more out, creating bald spots all over his head. When the man had turned away from the fire the young boy could see his eyes and they were the color of rubies. When he had seen the way the man had swooped up the snake and held it the pudgy boy tumbled over himself backwards in fear. He quickly rose to his feet and began running through the forest as fast as he could.
Once to the edge of town, the small round boy ran head first into the abdomen of a boy of the same age as he. The other boy felt to the ground with a grunt and the round boy fell on top of him. He began to push himself off the other boy when he felt two strong hands roughly grab the back of his neck and hoist him from the ground.
“Oyé! What do you think you are doing?!? Do you think you can just going around knocking people over and getting away wit’ it?” The boy who now had him by the neck was now looking at him face to face. He was a strapping boy for his age of about 11 and had a certain smugness about him. He had black wavy hair that hung down to his shoulders and a crazed look in his dark eyes. “If you really thought…”
“Let him go Sirius. He is not worth our efforts.” His friend interrupted from the ground. He was still on his hands and knees searching the ground for something when finally his hand came in contact with metal and glass. He picked up a pair of round black rimmed glasses and placed them on his face as he got to his feet. He combed his fingers through his unruly short black hair. He saw that Sirius still had the boy held with his one fist and his other fist cocked back ready to strike. “Come on Sirius. We need to get to Diagon Alley to get our school supplies before Mum wants us home for dinner.
Sirius released the boy roughly and watched as he fell over backwards and looked down at him with a snort. He looked back to his friend, “Are you sure he didn’t break your glasses or anything James?” James shook his head. Sirius rounded on the boy still on the ground. “You’re lucky that nothing was damaged.” Sirius turned towards James direction and began to follow alongside of him. “You right James he wasn’t worth it. Come on; let’s get to Olivander’s first. I can’t wait to have a wand.
The small boy left on the ground called out to the two walking away from him. “Wait are you both going to be attending Hogwarts when the new term starts?”
“And what is it to you if we are?” Sirius turned and shot him a look that struck a little fear in the boy.
“I am also going to get my school supplies for the upcoming term. I do not know many wizards my age and was wondering if it may be possible to join you. I promise I will be no bother to you.” The boy pleaded with them.
James and Sirius looked at this boy begging for some sort of companionship. Sirius snorted and turned around and began to walk away when James grabbed his wrist and stopped him. Sirius turned around and saw the look in James’ eyes and knew that they would be picking up another passenger for their trip to get supplies.
“Let’s have us come with us. If nothing else we can see what we can get him to do for us. Hell, maybe we can get him to carry some of our bloody books.” James whispered to Sirius.
Sirius looked at James and waved his hand dismissively at him and folded his arms.
James walked back towards the boy a little ways. “Alright, you can walk with us. I’m James Potter and my friend over there is Sirius Black.” James said while extending his hand.
The small pudgy boy grasped James’ hand and shook it fervently. “Thank you. I’m Peter Petigrew.” The three boys walked down the streets towards the shops of Diagon Alley to do their shopping for the new school term that was fast approaching.
