Chapter 8
Potions and Killing Curses
Chapter 8
Hermione and Severus grew more and more in love as they worked on the potion. With each passing day, they came closer and closer to completing the potion. It was mid November when things took a turn for the worst. Hermione and Severus had to leave the safety of the manor to pick up one of the final ingredients.
The couple had to travel to a nearby village where an associate of Severus lived. As they made their way through the crowded streets of the tiny village, someone brushed against Hermione.
“Sorry.” The woman apologized.
“No problem.” Hermione replied.
“You all right?” Severus asked.
“I’m fine. She just accidentally bumped me. Stop worrying.” Hermione smiled up at him.
Severus returned the smile. A few minutes later they stopped at a small brick home. Severus knocked. The door was opened a few seconds later.
“Ah, welcome. Please come in.” A man said.
Quickly, Severus and Hermione entered the house. Once the door was closed, the man and Severus embraced like old friends. Hermione smiled as she watched. The man turned and faced Hermione.
“So you’re the one who thawed old Severus’s heart. I’m Solarius.” The man greeted.
“Hermione.” She replied.
“It’s nice to meet you. I must say you are very beautiful. And intelligent. When Severus sent word to me that you were the one who created this potion, I was hoping to one day meet you.” Solarius beamed as he kissed Hermione’s hand.
“Thank you.” Hermione blushed.
“All right you old flirt. We can’t stay long. Voldemort has the Death Eaters searching for her and my cover as spy has been blown.” Severus said.
“I understand. Follow me.” Solarius nodded.
The three headed downstairs. Hermione was impressed by the state of the art lab Solarius had set up. He walked to a nearby cabinet. A few minutes later he pulled out a black bottle and walked back over to them.
“Now, be very careful with this. I don’t have to tell you how hard it was to get Basilisk venom.” Solarius explained.
“I understand. Thank you old friend.” Severus said as he carefully placed the bottle in a box.
“Think nothing of it. You two be careful and good luck on the potion.” Solarius smiled.
Hermione and Severus nodded. They headed back upstairs and left. Once they reached a nearby alley, they apparated back to the Manor. They made a beeline for the lab. Hermione stood back as Severus carefully measured out the venom and added it to the bubbling potion. The potion hissed violently and they both dove under a nearby table. A second later, the potion settled back down and continued to bubble.
“Okay. Now we just stir it counter clock wise for ten minutes, using swift short strokes.” Hermione said.
“All right.” Severus said.
Hermione sat on one of the stools as Severus began stirring the potion. She timed him to make sure he didn’t over stir it. For ten minutes neither of them said a word. Once finished, they left the lab so the potion could simmer for another week. Severus draped his arm around her shoulders as they entered the library.
“One phase down. Only two to go.” Hermione sighed.
“Yup. Now, we can just relax for a week.” Severus chuckled.
The two exited the lab. They had just reached the stairs, when Hermione began to sway. Severus turned and caught her just as she collapsed.
“Hermione! Hermione, talk to me!” He cried as he gathered her into his arms.
He ran to their room and gently placed her on the bed. Once she was in her nightgown he called for Celest. The elf arrived and saw the fearful look in her master’s eyes.
“Master Severus, what’s wrong?” She asked.
“It’s Hermione. She just collapsed. Go and floo for Albus and Poppy. I have a feeling I’m going to need her help on this.” Severus instructed.
Celest nodded and quickly disappeared. Severus pulled out his wand and began running a diagnostic spell, but it came up empty. He was beginning to panic when Poppy and Albus entered the room.
“What happened?” Poppy asked as she began running her wand over Hermione.
“We…we were coming upstairs when she started swaying. I turned and caught her before she hit the floor.” Severus explained.
“I know you were leaving the manor today, did anything happen while you two were out?” Albus asked.
“No, nothing. Wait! A woman bumped into Hermione. I asked Hermione if she was all right and she just said I was being overprotective.” Severus answered.
“Here’s the problem. It appears she was pricked by a dart or needle. She has been poisoned.” Poppy announced sadly.
“Poisoned! With what?” Severus demanded.
“It looks like it’s the Rhine Maiden poison.” Poppy answered.
Severus’s legs buckled and he collapsed to his knees. Albus and Celest rushed to his side.
“Master, what’s wrong?” Celest asked.
“That…that poison’s antidote takes three weeks to make. I…I have only made it once and it…it…failed.” Severus stuttered.
“Severus, I know this is hard, but you have to pull yourself together. Hermione needs you now. What can I do?” Albus said gently as he draped his arm around Severus’s shoulders.
“I can’t brew the antidote and Hermione’s potion at the same time. I will need someone who is as proficient as Hermione and myself at potions to take over her potion while I focus on the antidote.” Severus answered.
“The only person I can think of is Sirius Black. And before you start in on him, his marks in potions were five points lower than yours and Hermione’s since she tied with you.” Albus said.
Severus turned and looked at his beloved Hermione laying on the bed in slumber. He knew that if he didn’t make the antidote perfectly, nothing would wake Hermione. That was the curse of the Rhine Maiden poison. It put whoever absorbed the poison into an eternal sleep. The person would never age and never die.
“Fine. Get him here by tonight. I have to gather everything for the antidote. Luckily, I have all the ingredients.” Severus hissed.
“I will. Celest, while Severus is brewing the potion, I would like you to remain at Hermione’s side. When she chose Severus’s plan to protect her, Sirius wasn’t happy with it. Also, Severus and Sirius do not get along.” Albus instructed.
“I will do it Master Albus. Yous can counts on me.” Celest said.
“Very well. I will go and notify Sirius. Poppy, will you be returning to Hogwarts right away?” Albus asked.
“I will stay here until Sirius gets here.” Poppy answered.
Albus nodded. He patted Severus on the shoulder and left. Severus got unsteadily to his feet and sat on the edge of the bed and held Hermione’s hand. A lone tear sliding down his cheek.
“Severus, I have complete faith in you. I know you will successfully brew the antidote and revive Hermione.” Poppy said gently.
“I hope so. God Poppy, I can’t loose her. Not now, not ever.” Severus replied brokenly.
Celest walked over and laid her head on his knee while Poppy gently rubbed his back. All three of them hoping Hermione would be brought back to them safely.
