Chapter 8
Love of a Phoenix
Chapter 8
Severus walked right through the flames He ignored the heat as they licked at his robes. All he knew, was that Hermione needed him and he had to get to her. When he reached her, the sight before him scared the hell out of him. Hermione was completely engulfed by fire. Where her skin and hair should have been, was all fire.
“SEVERUS! HELP ME! PLEASE!” She screamed.
“I’m coming!” Severus cried.
He ran up to her and wrapped his arms around her. The flames leapt at the contact. Severus just ignored them. Hermione’s screams died down to whimpers. He held her even tighter, somehow knowing he couldn’t let go of her. The flames roared even more, spinning faster and burning hotter. Suddenly, a disembodied voice began speaking.
“You think you can save her? By consummating your love for one another? Ha-Ha. Pathetic mortal.”
“Who are you! Show yourself!” Severus yelled as he pulled Hermione even closer.
“Look into your heart. You know who I am. I am the Phoenix within your precious love currently in your arms. You think you can save her?” The voice asked.
“Yes!” He cried.
“You wish. She can’t be saved. She will soon be taken over by me. No matter what you do, you can’t stop it. She will fade and you will be forced to watch her be overcome with the darkness. Overcome by me.” The voice laughed.
“You’re wrong! I won’t let you control her! If anyone is going to fade, it will be you! I won’t lose her to you!” He roared.
The voice only laughed. As the evil laughter died, so did the flames. Finally, it was only Severus and Hermione. He felt her slump in his arms. She had passed out. Severus gathered her into his arms and hurried to his bedroom. After changing her into one of his white button down shirts and tucking her into bed, he returned to his study and flooed Aurora and Poppy. He felt that Hermione didn’t have much time.

Voldemort sat on his throne, kneeling before him was Lucius Malfoy. Voldemort motioned for Lucius to rise. Once at his full height, Lucius began speaking.
“My lord, my son has just sent me word of some rather interesting events.” Lucius said.
“What do you mean Lucius?” Voldemort asked.
“Tonight at dinner, it appears Ronald Weasley slapped the mudblood Granger. It looks as if there is dissention between the three Gryffindors.” Lucius explained.
“What did Potter do?” Voldemort questioned, his interest peaked.
“He yelled at Weasley and stayed at the mudblood’s side.” Lucius answered.
“Hmm. This makes things even better. The mudblood was made Severus’s assistant by Dumbledore. I have ordered him to bring her here on Friday night. Perhaps, I can use this recent event to turn her to our side. She could be a powerful tool against Potter and Dumbledore.” Voldemort said with an evil smile.
Lucius just bowed. He didn’t trust Severus and believed the Potions Master wasn’t a faithful follower anymore, but had no proof. Voldemort waved his hand, dismissing the platinum blonde wizard. Lucius bowed and exited the room.
“You’ll get yours Severus. I will find the proof I need, then you’re finished.” Lucius hissed as he exited the mansion.

“Okay Severus, what is going on here? And before you ask, Miss Granger is fine, just exhausted.” Poppy asked.
“It’s okay to tell her Severus, I have a feeling we maybe needing her help in the near future.” Aurora said.
“Hermione is a Phoenix Poppy. Now only you, Aurora, Albus, Minerva, and myself know. As for why she’s in my bed, wearing my shirt, she and I are lovers.” Severus answered.
“Oh. Now that explains why you flooed me in a near panic. What happened to her?” Poppy questioned.
Severus quickly filled them in on what had happened in the classroom. As he began describing the flames and the voice, Aurora got to her feet and went to stand in front of the fireplace, with her head bowed. Poppy listened intently till Severus finished.
“That explains why her magic seemed so low. By the dark side of the Phoenix presenting itself, it also drained Hermione’s magic temporarily. I want her to remain here. She needs to rest. I will notify Albus. She will need your strength to help her get through this. I fear tonight will be the worst. Her nightmares.” Poppy instructed.
“You know a lot about Phoenixes?” Severus asked.
“Yes. I have treated several over the years. I’ve also studied about them.” Poppy answered.
“I should have seen this coming.” Aurora hissed.
“What?” Poppy and Severus asked.
“The darkness. Earlier today, Hermione lost control when Draco mouthed you’re dead mudblood and set fire to the Slytherin table. Then with Mr. Weasley slapping her at dinner, the dark side in her felt a chance to break free.” Aurora explained.
“What do I do? What if next time, I’m not with her when this happens again? Or worse, I can’t get to her?” Severus asked, fighting the anger as he thought back to Ron slapping his Hermione.
“I don’t think that will be a problem. Now that you have consummated your love and your relationship, whenever she needs you, you will be able to go right to her. No matter where you two are.” Aurora sighed.
“Now what?” He asked as he sat at the bed’s edge and held Hermione’s hand.
“You love her, that’s what. Stay with her and be strong. Now that the darkness has made an appearance, it will do so again. You must be prepared. There is a ritual that will help. Once she rested, I will perform the ritual on you both. Poppy, I will need your help.” Aurora replied.
“You’re referring to the Right of Fire and Ice aren’t you?” Poppy asked.
Aurora nodded. Poppy let out a sigh, but agreed. The two witches bid Severus good night and left. They needed to inform Albus of the night’s events. Once alone with Hermione, Severus stripped down to his boxers and climbed into the bed with her. He gathered her gently into his arms.
“No matter what, I won’t lose you to the evil. I love you and will do everything in my power to save you. I swear on my life I will Hermione.” Severus whispered. Slowly he drifted off to sleep. Hoping Poppy was wrong about the nightmares.
Unfortunately, the nightmares came. Many times through the night, Hermione would be surrounded in flames and all Severus could do was hold her and hope it helped in some small way. Just before dawn, she finally fell into a peaceful slumber.
‘I hope this ritual of Aurora’s will work. I can’t loose her to the darkness. I WON’T loose her to the darkness.’ he thought angrily as he too fell back asleep.
