Lentesco – Chapter Eight
Life soon settled into a sort of rhythm for Severus. He worked as hard as he could on his studies, ensuring he worked quickly, as he was never quite sure exactly when Lucius would demand his company. When not underneath the blond, or in a lesson, or doing homework, Severus sat outside, enjoying the brief moment of freedom. Often he would be joined by Lily Evans, much to Lucius’ disapproval, but Severus felt that the punishments he suffered worth it if he could just spend a small amount of time with her.
“Why do you let him do it?” Lily asked one afternoon as they sat together by the lake.
Severus was surprised. Usually they pretended that nothing at all unusual was happening between Lucius and him. “What do you mean?” he queried.
“Oh! Come off it, Sev! You’re not that bad to look at. There must be someone you care about, who cares back! Why do you let him humiliate you? Is it worth it just to feel wanted for a few moments?”
Snape swallowed; Lily had come far too close to the truth of why he was with Lucius. “It’s complicated,” he began softly, “I … oh … Lily,” he stopped, blushing.
She looked at him, and then her green eyes widened. “Sev?” she said, her voice gentle and almost pitying, “Really?”
“I…I always thought you knew,” he responded miserably.
She shook her head, her almost waist length hair shining in the sunshine. “I truly didn’t. Oh, Sev, I never even thought. But, do you have to let him touch you? He’s horrible, and I’ve heard he follows that evil wizard. You must know. Is he a follower?”
Snape twisted his fingers together. How could he tell her? How could he explain what his life before Hogwarts had been like? She had lived so close by, yet had known nothing of it. How could he tell her of his longing to see his father tortured?
She hugged her knees, and settled her chin on them, looking out over the water. Her green eyes seemed over bright. Finally she whispered, “Sev, don’t let him break you.”
