Reflections and Oaths.

Reflections and Oaths.

Luna Lovegood could never be described as vain, she cared little for her appearance and was convinced cosmetics were lure to mipplewhips. However, the woman staring back from the mirror with wide eyes was certainly an improvement.

Luna’s transformation had begun at half past seven, when Narcissa had transfigured Luna’s guest room sink into a salon-style basin; and put a comfortable chair before it. Lady Malfoy had spent twenty minutes shampooing Luna’s waist length blonde hair; then massaged in a luxurious conditioner (which happened to belong to Lucius) while Hermione used a charm to lengthen Luna’s bitten fingernails, and give them a French manicure.

Narcissa had then produced her secret recipe for beautiful blonde hair – cold chamomile tea with five drops of chamomile essential oil blended in. Chamomile apparently attracted no creatures that would cause harm or injury (infact, the scent of the flowers would calm them), so Luna had no complaints. Once dry, the tea and oil accented the many shades in Luna’s blonde tresses, adding a million different shades of gold to normally dull hair.

A refreshing face mask, nice hot bath and full-body-moisturise later (with one of Narcissa’s favourite lotions), Luna was ready for the older woman to style her hair. The lady of the house relished in having such a beautiful blank canvass to work with; Narcissa had secretly hoped Draco would be a girl, however, girls were a rarity among the Malfoy line. There were never any more children after Draco, and this saddened Narcissa – a little sister might have done Draco the world of good, and given Lucius a wake up call. Pureblood males viewed girls as damsels in distress to be protected – the sole reason Narcissa’s Father didn’t become a Death Eater was so he could keep his little girls away from dark magic. Narcissa, like many Mothers of daughters, would have delighted in the supreme variety of little girls’ clothing.

“You seem sad.” Luna said, her eyes following Narcissa’s hands in the mirror as she combed and brushed the young woman’s hair.

“I was just thinking, what if Draco had been a girl? Or had a sister?” Narcissa shook her head such thoughts were pointless now.

“Pretty. Very pretty, I think. A nice calming influence. Giggles and ribbons. Pretty dresses and robes.” Luna said whimsically, still following Narcissa’s hands and silver hairbrush.

“Are you a Legilimens, Luna?” Narcissa said.

“No. I just get feelings of what people think, little pictures…” Luna replied, watching as the woman behind her charmed gold hair pins to the exact same shade as her hair.

Lady Malfoy waved her wand, and the various kinks and waves from Luna’s hair, creating a die-straight fall of gold (a wave of her wand removing the split ends and making the hair all one length). Taking the small portion that would have been Luna’s fringe, Narcissa pulled it into two side herringbone plaits that met in the centre of the back of her head and continued down to the bottom in a large herringbone (grips holding the knots in place). A few gypsophelia and lavender flowers pushed between the knots completed the simple style.

A little powder foundation, pale grey eye shadow, pale pink lipstick and mascara were all the cosmetics she needed over her flawless skin – and it was all Luna was prepared to wear (in fear of mipplewhips).

Ginny received a similar treatment, however, her flame hair was rinsed through with cranberry tea. After the bridesmaids were bathed, potioned and lotioned, Narcissa left to see Lucius.

Finally, at half past one, Luna was zipped into the altered dress, All Hermione and Narcissa had changed was the neckline – changing the simple shift into a halter-neck, princess line outfit. The neckline gave the impression that she was bustier than she was, while the slimming line accented her slim frame and made her look taller. The light layer of chiffon floating over the top gave an earthy feeling and just enough ‘girlyness’ to remind the unattached males of her femininity.

Ginny crept up behind the gob smacked bridesmaid, wrapping her arms around her waist. “Don’t you scrub up nice! We’ll have to hex the blokes to keep them away!”

“Really?!” Luna said, still not fully believing her reflection as it smiled back at her.

“Definitely – come on, it will need all three of us to fight Hermione into her frock!”.

With half an hour to go, Molly had taken over from Harry in dressing her Grandson in his baby suit and robes. The nappy, socks, undervest and britches were easy – but little James was rather insistent that he wasn’t going to be wearing the minute dress shirt or waistcoat. Molly wasn’t even contemplating the bow tie at this stage.

“Be a good boy for Grandma, come on sweetpea – stop being a wriggle-bum for me.” Molly crooned as James’s arms flailed at her. Harry was sat in a corner, putting the finishing touches to his speech for the reception. His black waistcoat was on a hanger on the shelf, Molly had tied his cravat for him.

“Ah, so it wasn’t just you who didn’t like your dress robes as an infant!” Lucius said, shrugging into his black frock coat (in the same fabric as Harry’s waistcoat) and smirking at Draco. Marcus looked as if he would laugh, but wouldn’t dare – Draco threw a nasty hex.

Marcus also wouldn’t dare joke at the fact that Draco was wearing white – having Draco cross was one thing, but having Lucius angry wasn’t worth it. All Malfoys wore white to their weddings, all were virgins on their wedding nights; Lucius had put nineteen people into the Hogwarts Hospital wing when he was a pupil there, all of them had made fun of the Malfoy chastity charm.

“Right, that’s one arm, yes it is! Lets put the other little arm in the other sleeve – shall we? Yes we shall!” Molly clucked, knowing that forcing a boy into an outfit would end in tears. She learnt that with Bill early on.

“Erm – he’s chewing the bowtie, Mrs. Weasley.” Marcus pointed out, wishing he could chew his off too. Within five minutes of his Grandma’s soft words, James was dressed (the tie scourgified and dried first, and being replaced by a dummy in his mouth). Marcus attempted to tuck in his white shirt for the sixth time, his cravat draped around his neck like a scarf, unknotted.

“It was easier to dress the baby than dress you!” Lucius said, moving over to the hopeless best man to (a) tuck his shirt in, (b) fasten the cummerbund, (c) straighten the lilac waistcoat and (d) tie the cravat.

“I play quidditch for a living – I don’t wear formal stuff! I go to presentations and things in team robes that are really basic!” Marcus said in his defence.

A gentle knock at the door broke Marcus’s complaints, the person on the other side didn’t wait to be welcomed. A woman in a simple, sweeping aqua dress entered; she carried a long, thin, ornately carved wooden box and a well-worn small leather book. She was a middle aged woman, with ankle length mid-brown hair entwined with ivy. Her face was free of cosmetics, her skin was a warm honey brown – the mark of someone who spent a lot of time under the sun.

Everyone in the room (with the exception of James) bowed their heads in respect. She placed the box gently on the windowsill in the February sunlight.

“Draco Malfoy?” she said smiling gently.

“High Priestess, thank-you for performing the ceremony for us.” Draco said quietly. “We are greatly honoured.”

“It is I whom is honoured – it is rare I am requested to perform weddings, many feel that asking it of me is to waste my time, many tend to ask the subordinate priestesses.” She smiled, a genuinely warm smile. “Before we begin the service, I must ask you to swear three oaths.”

Draco nodded, everyone else left the room quietly, James suddenly quiet as the adults around him showed respect. His eyes wide as he saw the bright aqua of her dress. The priestess smiled and wiggled her fingers at him, making him gurgle in reply. She turned back to a bowed Draco, and waited for the door to gently close before she spoke.

“Firstly, do you swear you partake in this bond as an unwedded or widowed man?” she said calmly.

“I do swear that I partake in this unbound and free to do so.” Draco said the practiced reply clearly.

“Secondly, do you swear that you participate in this union of your own resolve and are not forced to do so by any other party?”

“I do swear I participate in the union of my own will and decide.” Draco said, rather unnerved at talking to his shoes, rather than the priestess.

“Thirdly, do you swear on the Lake Lady and your own heart that your previous solemn oaths are truth and cannot be disputed by any party? Should you have sworn oaths in falsity the marriage is forfeit, as is your freedom.”

“I do swear on the Lake Lady, and upon my heart that my spoken oaths cannot be falsified.”

“Your bride has also sworn to the same pledges, I see fit that you are able to be wed without dispute. In honour of the Lake Lady, whom I serve; I shall perform this binding – as she performed the first bonding – without doubt in my heart.” She said, placing both her hands over Draco’s heart.

“And I partake in the bonding with no doubts of my own.” Draco replied, almost forgetting the line as he listened to the soothing voice – a voice very similar to his Mother’s.

“Are you ready, Draco Malfoy?”

“Yes, High Priestess, I am.”
