Night of Fright

Chapter eight: Night of Fright

Albus and Scorpius rushed down the hall to the potions lab just as the bell rang out marking the end of class. Scorpius leaned against the wall, crossed his arms, and tapped his foot impatiently as Gryffindor after Gryffindor passed them. Albus sighed and poked his head inside. Spotting Leon, he gestured to him quickly, “Come on we need to talk!”

After a moment of getting his stuff together, he blonde Gryffindor joined the impatient Slytherins, “What’s the deal?” Leon asked as he threw his backpack over his shoulder and they started walking towards the stairs, “You guys look like you want to wet yourselves from excitement AND like you’ve seen a threshal. What’s going on?”

Albus dragged Scorpius from the wall and pulled Leon into an empty classroom. After a few minutes, both boys had gotten everything out about Gale, the upperclassmen, and the task they had to complete. Leon stood there for a second then shook his head, “I can’t believe that you want to do that to a fellow slytherin.”

Scorpius huffed, “Feeding him to a Basilisk won’t hurt…for us anyways.”

Albus shook his head, “Why don’t we search around and see what we can find out of the ordinary. I bet you we could check the forest and some of the rooms down here and the older tower rooms too.”

“So, like a treasure hunt?” Leon raised an eyebrow, “How will that help or injure the school?”

“Well, say we find something, like….ummm…I don’t know, Slytherin’s lost dress robes or something along those lines. Something expensive and full of history that everyone forgot about.” Albus shrugged, “It’s a start and it’s a lot better of a start than feeding Gale Smith to a basilisk.”

“Let’s see…I need a toad and a chicken egg and a place to keep it safe….” Scorpius muttered as he schemed in a corner of the room, “and I need to perfect that no movement spell if I want to keep the toad in place…”

Leon rolled his eyes, “Alright fine. Tonight we’ll search the forest. I’ll see if I can borrow your brother’s invisibility cloak for tonight.”

Albus nodded but Scorpius, too caught up in his scheme to kill Gale, didn’t even hear him.

Later that night found all three boys creeping through the frosty September night towards the forbidden forest. Scorpius shivered, though he was between the other two, and pulled his cloak tight around him, “I can’t believe we’re going into the forbidden forest. I can’t believe you guys talked me into it.”

“I can’t believe you’re still complaining.” Leon groaned and shifted where his head was, “And what kind of shampoo are you using? You smell like my grandmother on my mom’s side’s house.”

“Why are you smelling me?” Scorpius retorted rocking backwards for a second to trip him.

“Because you reek like a French whore house, it’s impossible to not smell that.” Leon complained.

“Will you two shut up? We’re in the forest, off with the cloak.” Albus said to the both of them.

The boys threw off the cloak and started into the darkening forest. Leon stumbled, “Ow! Damn tree roots.”

Albus shivered slightly, “I almost tripped a few minutes ago too. It’s kind of like the trees are trying to do it on purpose.”

“Who’s being a hufflepuff now?” Scorpius teased then stepped ahead of Albus pulling out his wand as he did so, “Lumos”

Albus glared then shrugged it off as he and Leon lit their own wands and continued down the path, “I say look for anything that catches the light.”

“Or runs from it.” Leon muttered as he watched a kitten sized spider climb up a tree away from the light, “I guess Binns wasn’t lying about the giant spiders.”

Scorpius shivered once more, “please keep that thing away from me.”

“Hufflepuff” Leon said as the brushed past him, “It’s just a large venomous spider that wants to feast on your insides. Nothing to worry about.”

Scorpius’s hand tightened on his wand, “You are so lucky I’m not the kind to seek revenge.”

“How about you both shut up before I feed you both to the bloody spiders.” Albus growled as they continued down a tunnel made from a strangely grown tree, “What do you think is in here?”

Leon stopped dead, “Bigger spiders.”

“Bigger spiders?” Albus and Scorpius asked raising their eyebrows.

“Try the size of a large cow, or small dragon.” Leon said as he started backing up and Albus moved closer for a better look.

Albus ran his wand in a wide sweep of light around the spiders’ den and blinked as something shown his wand light back brighter than before, “What’s that?” he winced.

Scorpius stepped forward, feeling safe in the wide beam of light, and picked up a rather large, gaudy ring, “Ew.”

Albus and Leon tugged Scorpius over and yanked the cloak over them pressing themselves tight against the side of the wall as another large spider crawled past. Albus looked at Leon under the cloak and mouthed the words, “let’s get the bloody hell out of here”

Leon nodded and gave the message to Scorpius who was now forced to be the one behind not even a second after the words left Leon’s mouth, they were running down the path stumbling and tripping but never slowing down or stopping.

They closed in on the school and slowed just enough to get in and down the stairs to the dungeon without making a racket. Albus and Scorpius nodded to Leon then ducked under the cloak and ran to their common room knowing that the invisible Gryffindor was going back to his tower nest.

Once safely inside their cozy green common room, both first years glanced around to make sure they were alone. After a single nod from both Scorpius pulled out the ring to look at it in the light from the dying embers of the fire, “Its got a big crack down it.”

“It looks kind of expensive though and old.” Albus noted as he ran his fingers over the smooth band of the ring, “and a little worn too.”

“What’s with the weird symbols on it? It looks like it cracked right down a line already there.” Scorpius muttered and turned the ring slightly, “I kind of like it though.”

“Why don’t you hold onto it until we figure out what it’s used for then?” Albus suggested then glanced at his watch, “Oh wow its past midnight. We should go to bed I’ve got Hagrid’s tomorrow.”

Scorpius nodded and slipped the ring into his pocket. They turned and started for the stairs then froze dead when they seen who was walking down them in his pajamas.

“Where have you two been?” Gale asked as he ran his fingers through his shaggy black hair, “You haven’t made us lose any house points have you?”

Albus smiled sheepishly, “No I was just coming back from the hospital wing and Scorpius was escorting me on Madam Pomfrey’s orders.”

Scorpius nodded, “Well we should get him in bed he needs his rest if he’s going to be able to make it to class tomorrow.”

Gale nodded, “You should.”

The boys slid past him and up the stairs to their dormitory and their beds before he could ask more questions but Gale didn’t follow. He walked over to the couch and reached underneath it to pull out his snake, “What did they say and do my pet?”

The snake hissed and curled around his master telling the story of the young males and the shiny cracked ring they held. Gale listened and stroked the snake’s glistening coils as it told him this then he went and fetched some green ink and a quill with a scroll of parchment. He sat down at one of the tables with high-backed stools and started to write a letter:

Mother,

The boys have seemed to of found on of Grandfather’s old horcruxes. It’s cracked so I know that it doesn’t work but I have a feeling it might be of importance. The stone in it had a strange symbol on it according to Ethelinda, my snake. She said it had something like a triangle a circle and that the crack was straight down an already made line. I’m not sure but I think that you might find these things useful or useful for me if you decide not to use them.

Gale

He folded up the letter and walked to the window whistling at one of the owls which swooped down to take it, “Take that to my mother will you?”

As the owl took off in a flurry of feathers Gale turned back to his snake, “You’ve done brilliantly my pet.” He pulled a live rat out of his pocket and let it free on the floor for her, “Enjoy my pet.”

Gale started up the stairs then turned and pointed his wand at the fireplace, “Nox.”

The flames went out and as the last lights of fire danced in place ready to go out, Gale’s eyes flashed a deep blood red.

He smiled then turned and headed back up the stairs, “Soon…very soon. I’ll make my mother proud, I’ll avenge my grandfather, and then….though it may take a few months or even years….I’ll rule the world. Destroying all muggles and making all of magic kind my family’s slaves.”

The snake below hissed in enjoyment and struck down its rodent pray as its master let out his own evil cackle.
