Before Holiday Break

Mrs. Weasley was definitely a little put out by Hermione not wanting to stay at the burrow but conceded since Hermione promised to stay from the 23rd to the 27th. Besides, with Dumbledore on Hermione’s side there wasn’t much she could do.

Monday afternoon Hermione sat in double potions waiting for class to end. The class was helping to replenish Madame Pomfrey’s stock in the hospital wing. She had already made four pepper-up potions but, with only a few minutes left in class, she decided not to start another brew. Instead she took the time to put nice labels on the four she finished. Professor Snape dismissed the class after everyone had put their share of the potions on his desk. Once again when only Hermione remained he flicked the door shut with his wand and turned his attention on her.

“Shall we retire to my office? Or I could call up some tea from my study?” Professor Snape asked while unbuttoning his robes.

“Some tea would be nice.” Hermione followed him into his study and sat down in one of the chairs facing the fire. A house elf came through the fireplace a few seconds later with a pitcher of tea and two tea cups.

“So, how was your week?” Snape didn’t even look up from stirring sugar into his tea. “And please tell me the truth.”

“It was okay. Nothing really that interesting. I finally told the Weasleys that I wasn’t going to the burrow for all of winter holiday.” Hermione absent-mindedly stirred her tea while staring into the fire.

“And you look like you haven’t eaten for days because?” Snape smiled smugly when she looked up in surprise.

“Well, you see, what had happened was –” Hermione started but Snape interrupted her.

“Don’t lie. That statement is never followed with the truth.”

“I’ve been exercising a lot lately that’s all.”

“And when was your last meal?”

“…Yesterday? I’m not completely sure what meal though.”

“Do I need to get the veritaserum?”

“Honestly, I don’t remember. A couple days ago.”

“Well I do believe I told you not to switch from cutting to anything else that is bad for you. Exercise, I can understand. It’s nice to have some way to get all of the anger out. But exercise alone wouldn’t cause you to loose this much weight. It’s only been a week and you look twenty pounds lighter. So, is it just that you aren’t eating or, are you doing something else as well?” Hermione stared down at her tea, tears threatening to fall. “So I’ll take that as a yes. Why are you doing this to yourself? It’s extremely unhealthy.”

“I don’t do it on purpose.”

“Do what?”

“Puking; but I don’t do it on purpose. I just can’t keep food down. Eating just makes me feel sick.” By now Hermione was crying silently.

“What can I do to help you?”

“I don’t know. I just don’t know what to do anymore. I mean, a part of me doesn’t want to be this way anymore. The rational part of my brain knows where it’ll lead. It’s just so hard to let go of everything. I don’t want to forget.”

“You don’t have to forget. You shouldn’t. It’s a part of who you are. Sometimes, it’s a good to remember your past. It’ll show you why you are the way you are. You’ll learn from it. Something good will come out of it.”

“What good can come out of a child being raped?!” Hermione was getting angry. “I-I’m sorry. I shouldn’t yell. I just don’t understand.”

“Come here.” Hermione walked over to Snape. He pulled her down to sit in his lap. “Look at me. It wasn’t a good thing to happen and I know it must have been awful. But one day you might meet a child that has gone through the same thing, and you will be able to help them better then anyone else could.”

“I guess.” Hermione was sniffling into Snape’s shoulder. “I just don’t want to remember anymore.”

“Well there are ways to make you forget, but I don’t think that would be a wise idea. It’s a better idea to learn to cope. Okay, it’s time for dinner. Come see me whenever you need to over break, but at least once a week.” Snape got up and put his robes on.

“Yes sir. And thank you.” Hermione left for her room.

“Oh no you don’t. You’re going to dinner; and you’re going to eat.” Snape followed her all the way to the Great Hall.
