Chapter 8 - Lost and Found and Lost Again

Draco and his loyal band of Gryffindors (as he likes to call them) had narrowed the search area down to a small section of Moscow. There were some rundown sections of town that had unusual amounts of magical energy.

Several locals had been questioned and all had mentioned seeing two English couples in the area. No one was sure exactly where they lived, but all were sure they had only been in the area seven or eight months.

Harry had suggested searching every home, but Draco had a better idea.

“They have to know we are looking for her. They have been a step ahead of us all this time. They probably have lots of wards around the place. We should look for a house with strong wards.”

“That might just work, Malfoy. Let’s try it,” replied Ron.

“It might still take a while, after all there are thousands of homes in our search area,” said Mandy.

“Well. It’s been eight months already. Now that I know we are this close, I am not stopping until I find her,” stated Draco.

Hermione woke in the middle of the night. It took her a moment to put her finger on what was wrong. A sudden pain shot through her stomach and she realized what woke her. She was in labor.

Draco and the others gathered around a table at the inn. Scattered around it were maps, diagrams, blueprints, and dark magic detectors. They were scouring the search area, house by house, looking for magical signatures.

“What about this one?”

“Nope. Signatures too low. Probably just a squib living there.”

“This one? No… wait… oops… sorry… that’s a wrong reading. My fault.”

The group leaned back over the table. The conversation slowly died as they all became lost in the search.

Hermione screamed as the pain tore though her again. The kidnappers came down the stairs, took one look at her, and rushed to her side.

“It’s about time. I was wondering when the little bastard was going to get here,” the larger male said.

“Unchain her so she can lie down to push,” the short female said.

“No, I’m not going to take the chance. She can push that thing out standing up.”

The females helped Hermione squat and held her up while she delivered her son right there on the cold, dirty floor. The smaller of the males reached down, grabbed the baby, and wrapped him in a towel.

“Take a good look, bitch. This will be the last time you see him. Or us.”

The male kidnappers took the baby and went upstairs. The females helped Hermione to lie back against the wall. “Your lover boy is in town,” the tall female whispered in her ear.

Hermione’s eyes opened wide. *Draco’s here?*

“That’s right. He should be here to save you in a few days. Too bad, though, we will already be long gone, with your baby.” She turned and walked towards the stairs. The shorter female turned to follow, stopped, and as soon as the other female was out of earshot whispered, “I’m so sorry.”

As she went to climb the stairs, the shorter female tripped. Her hood slid off her face and she pulled it back up quickly, but not before Hermione got a good look at her face. “PANSY!!” she gasped, then quickly passed out.

Draco awoke in a cold sweat. He had dreamed of Hermione again. This time she was in a lot of pain and was bleeding. She had passed out, but he could still feel her pain. He shot out of bed and ran out of his room.

The inn where they were staying was crowded but Harry jumped up as soon as he saw the look on Malfoy’s face.

“She’s dying, Potter.”

“How do you know?”

“I saw her again, in my dreams. This time she’s dying. I don’t know what they did to her but she is bleeding a lot and is passed out from the pain.”

“Well then, let’s go get her shall we.”

They had only last night narrowed the search down to two houses and were waiting for everyone to get a little rest before attacking.

Harry and Draco hurried through the inn waking everyone and telling them to get ready. “Hurry, we have to move NOW!” they shouted.

Once everyone was gathered, they split into two teams. Harry, Sirius, Neville, Luna, and Ginny were Team One. They would take the first house. Draco, Ron, Mandy, Snape, Lupin, and the Twins would be Team Two. They would take the second, larger, house.

Team One converged on their assigned house. Within minutes they had broken in and searched the entire house from top to bottom. It was empty. “Let’s go join the others,” Harry directed.

Team Two had just lowered the wards when Team One arrived.

“The house was empty, Draco.”

“Thanks, Potter. Now we know for sure this is the right one.”

They made their way up to the house quietly. Team One went to the front of the house. Team Two took the back.

“On three, Ok?”

“One…Two…Three. Now!!”

Both teams barged into the house at the same time, wands drawn. They all rushed in expecting a fight. Nothing. The first floor was empty.

*Please let her still be here,* Draco pleaded.

“Let’s split up and search the house,” suggested Lupin.

“I get the basement,” demanded Draco.

“I’m coming with you,” said Harry.

Everyone split up and began their search. Harry located the door to the basement.

“Draco, I found it.”

“Let’s go.”

“Wands out?”

“Of course.”

They slowly made their way down the stairs. The room was dark, musty, and smelled like something was rotting. Draco heard a low moan.

“Hermione? Love?”

He ran the rest of the way down the stairs and found her lying behind some boxes, still chained to the wall.

“Harry! Hurry! I found her. She’s hurt badly, Harry. Look, she’s still breathing. Thank Merlin! Hermione? Love? Please hang on. I’m here baby. I found you. Don’t die on me, please? Oh gods, please hold on.”

Harry removed the chains with a flick of his wand. “Draco, here.”

“What?”

Harry thrust an old hat in his hand. “Emergency port key to St. Mungo’s. I knew it would come in handy. Hurry. Go.”

“Thank you, Potter.” Draco activated the port key and vanished.
