Chapter 8

To his surprise, instead of gloating over his victory, Draco's expression turned shuttered, and he turned away from the sight of Harry righting himself. "Look, Potter, this is stupid."

"You're only now coming to that conclusion?" Harry asked snidely before he could help himself. Draco shot him a dark look, and for some reason, Harry felt himself shutting up to listen.

"Well, I've been talking to Pansy about it, and we've decided that when you're not being a jackass, you're not bad. So... I wanted... to say... that is... to tell you..." Very few people ever saw Draco Malfoy with such a lack of things to say. "I'm sorry," he blurted out, and then glowered at a point on the wall far enough from Harry that he didn't have to see the Gryffindor.

"Excuse me?" Harry asked, unable to believe what he was hearing.

"I'm not." Draco ground out between clenched teeth. "Repeating it."

Harry blinked at him, but nodded. "Fair enough," he said cautiously. "But what brought this on?"

"Pansy," Draco repeated slowly, as if he were talking to a retarded child. "She's sick of seeing us bickering, and we both knew that you'd never give off it."

"Hey! You were the one who attacked me!" Harry argued defensively.

"You pissed me off," Draco said, and pushed open the door to the Great Hall and motioned for Harry to go first. Harry watched him as he passed, but Draco seemed sincere.

"We need to talk," he said.

(So they talk. Go back to Chapter 5)
