I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
The Candidate
Author's Notes: I have no clue how the election process works in England and only a basic understanding of American politics. So for the purpose of this story I've simplified things.
As they make their way to the Room of Requirements they run into Cho and Carla and drag them along as well. "Okay so how do you guys feel about Campaign Fund Raisers?" Hunter asks as he takes his seat on the stage.
"What are you talking about?" Harry asks confused.
"Getting rid of Fudge and replacing him with a Minister that actually cares about the people instead of one that just cares about keeping his job." Hunter answers.
"But how are we going to do that?" Ron asks their leader.
"Simple," Hunter begins. "We go to the Order and organize them to take a more active role in the election. I'm sure one of them would make a good candidate for Minister."
"Sounds good to me." Cho says. "Just one problem. How are we supposed to get there?"
"Dobby," Hunter calls for the House Elf. As Dobby appears Hunter kneels beside him. "Please ask Professors McGonagall and Dumbledore to come see us. And whatever happens do not let Professor Umbridge find out."
Hunter looks back at the others as he begins to outline his plan for the election. "It has to be someone that no one can object to." Hunter informs them. "A pureblood would be best since their are many who still think blood matters. They also have to be in good standing with most of the Wizarding world and working for the Ministry wouldn't hurt either."
They think about this for a while and begin forming a list with Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny taking the lead since they know more Order Members then the others. The problem is that as soon as a name's selected it's removed for one reason or another. After about an hour they only had two names left on the list. "So this is it," Hunter mutters looking over the list. "Mr. Weasley and Madame Bones."
"I'm afraid so," Hermione sighs. "Both of them are from pureblood families with respectable ties to the community and they both have excellent service records in the Ministry."
"Dumbledore would win hands down," Ron offers. "But he'd refuse to accept the job."
"Still," Katie adds. "He'll support either of them for the election."
Hunter nods as he thinks things over. "Funding the campaign could be a problem. Even if we pool Harry's and Sirius' fortunes and the band plays the fund raisers for free, things are still going to be tight." He lights a cigarette as he begins walking around the room. "But who should it be?"
"Who should what be?" A voice asks from the doorway. They turn and see Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall enter the room. Hunter quickly fills them in on his plan and both Professors are visibly impressed.
"I would recommend Arthur," Dumbledore says. "He is a good man with a fairly solid reputation for hard work and fairness." Professor McGonagall agrees as Hunter circles Mr. Weasley's name.
"Alright now we need to talk things over with the Order so we can start working on the campaign." He looks at his Headmaster. "We're going to need your help with this one."
"I am at your service," The Professor smiles. Hunter can see the twinkle in the old man's eyes. "I shall make arrangements for you and your bandmates and crew to leave school during the weekends so that they can assist with the campaign and fund raising." There is a mischievous grin on the Professor's face as he continues. "It's good to see young people taking an active interest in how their government works. I believe a two scroll report from each of you on the experience should be worth reading."
The teens grumble at the thought of writting a two-scroll report but are cut off by a sharp look from Hunter. "That will be fair," he tells the Headmaster.
Hunter grabs his guitar and Professor Dumbledore soon enchants it into a Portkey for them and within seconds the entire group is in the living room of Order Headquarters.
They are soon greeted by a woman Hunter instantly recognizes as the mother of four of his friends. He holds out his gloved hand. "It is nice to meet you again Mrs. Weasley. I'm sorry for our sudden and unexpected arrival."
There is no time for explanations as the curtain covering an old portrait suddenly bursts open. The painting of the late Mrs. Black instantly begins her traditional tyraid."FILTH! SCUM! BY-PRODUCTS OF DIRT AND VILENESS! HALF-BREEDS, MUTANTS, FREAKS, BEGON FROM THIS PLACE!"
Hunter closes his eyes as his rage rises at her words. He removes his gloves to free his claws as he takes off his sunglasses. He looks up at the portrait and stares her right in the eyes as he roars. "YOU WILL SHUT THE HELL UP OR I WILL TEAR YOU TO SHREADS." As if to prove his point he slashes the painting with a clawed hand shredding the lower left corner.
The woman stops her ranting as she recoiled from the claws as if fearing for her very existence. Hunter grins baring his fangs. "Good now you will remain there quietly or I'll finish what I started." He says putting his gloves back on. "Nod if you understand."
Sirius' mother nods her head vigorously as Harry and Ron close the curtain again. Mrs. Weasley leads the teens to the kitchen where the others currently are. As they enter the room they find Billy, Sirius and Remus sitting at the table talking.
"Hunter," their former Professor greets him. "What brings you all here?"
Hunter and the others sit down as he outlines their plan for the coming election. The adults listen intently as the idea of having one of their own running for Minister of Magic begins to appeal to them. By the time he's finished explaining everything they agree to help in any way they can.
With the mission set before them they begin working on the details of the campaign. The twins and the rest of their friends arrive for lunch and quickly join in on the planning process. A couple hours later they've established their platform and key objectives for the campaign with their main focus being a quick end to the war.
The twins and the other teens agree to go around Diagon Alley and see how many shop owners they can get to help with getting Arthur's face out there to the public. Molly leaves for the Ministry to speak with her husband and register him in time for the election. Both Harry and Sirius pledge their families' fortunes to the cause, giving them some money to start with.
"With the right celebrity support we should be able to claim a good portion of the popular vote," Hunter informs them. "With Dumbledore and Harry we've got two famous wizards supporting him. The band's also got a small fan base among the student body and should be able to get those of age to vote as well as several of the younger students to hopefully get their families to vote as well."
"It's going to be a long difficult fight," Remus reminds him. "But we are off to a good start."
The twins and Lee had made up several posters and buttons while Neville, Hermione and Cho came up with information flyers to help get their message out to the public.
By the time Arthur and Molly arrive they had already planned his first fundraiser, registered him on the ballot and set up a press conference to announce his candidacy early the next morning. Not only had Arthur agreed to be their candidate but he was slowly beginning to warm up to the idea of running for Minister of Magic.
Hunter sat down with him and outlined the platform on which they had him running. "The most important things to focus on are the war and public safety." Hunter tells him. "The key to this will be to strengthen the entire Law Enforcement Department and increase Patrols in public areas. Best way to do this would be to increase both funding and man power for the Aurors.
"The tricky part is going to be doing this without raising taxes. You'll need to speak with the Aurors in the Order to find out how the Departments funds are currently being used. You might also want to speak with Madame Bones since she's actually the one in charge of their budget."
"The next part will be even trickier and must be handled perfectly for it to work," he cautions. "You'll also be working on strengthening and repairing Muggle relations. This can be a double-edged sword so we'll have to approach it carefully. While it can get you the Muggle born and Half-blood vote it risks alienating the pureblood voters. If handled properly though you can keep the Pure-bloods on your side while winning over the others."
"Sounds like you've put a lot of thought into this," Arthur says with a smile.
"They made one fatal mistake this year," Hunter grins evilly. "They pissed me off." He tells them about what happened after the Quidditch match yesterday. "They thought I was a dangerous half-breed before. They are about to learn just how dangerous this half-breed can really be."
They spend what little time the teens have left going over Arthur's speech for the press conference in the morning. Charlie is named as his father's campaign manager and is put in charge of things while Hunter and the others are at Hogwarts. Around ten o'clock they say their goodbyes and promise to continue to work on things on their end.
