Friend or Foe

Ch 8. Friend or Foe

………………………………………….

Tom waited nervously by the swings in the park. He had been early, hoping that she would be too. The time was 01:55, and still no sign of her. He started to walk towards the small path, amongst the trees.

“Changed you mind?”

Tom tuned startled. His eyes met the most beautiful sight he had seen in ages. She wore a deep green summer dress, black leather boots and his black and silver lined cloak. The only thing ruining the image was the white linen cloth wrapped around her hand.

“Y- you look… eh, wow…” he stuttered, lowering his face to the ground, trying to hide his blushed cheeks, pretending to scratch his neck.

“Cat got your tongue?” Lilith smirked

“Ehm no I just…” Tom gave an inward groan. He, the, oh so feared, Dark Lord, sounded like a bloody hormonal teen.

“Never mind, now how about that meal?”

“I can’t I have to go grocery shopping.” Tom raised an eyebrow. He knew things were different in the muggle world, he remembered that much, but household shopping; that was the job of a house elf.

“Oh, no you’re not, let me handle that. Do you have a shopping list?”

“Yes. But…” she tried to object.

“No but’s. No lady should do such a thing. Give it me here” he said snatching the list from her hand. He read through it, and made a loud fluty tune. A second later a big black, rather predatory looking, bird appeared out of no were. Lilith stepped back in alarm as the bird headed straight towards her, but stopped when she saw Tom stretch out his hand. The bird landed on his lower arm, and hopped up onto his shoulder.

“Hello babe” Tom purred. The bird responded by pecking his ear, then bobbed her head against his chin. Tom chuckled. “You’re such a fuss.”

Lilith couldn’t tear her eyes away from the odd couple.

“Lilith, say hi to Onyx, Onyx this is Lilith, and be nice…”

Onyx cooed softly and spread her wings.

“She likes you.” Tom said and started to roll up the shopping list, and put it in a little leather purse hanging around her leg.

“What are you doing?” Lilith asked curiously.

“I’m sending the list to my staff, so they can do the shopping and we can go to a restaurant or something and get something to eat, and have a much too late chat.”

“Um, okay. I have to be back before three thirty. Keith comes home from work. He’ll be really angry with me if I’m not done cleaning the house, with dinner ready at the table” Tom could not believe his own ears. In the wizarding world, at least in his circles, a lady should by no means ever cook or clean, unless if she want to by her own choosing (women and their strange ways of relaxing).

Lilith started to wonder what was wrong, because Tom was staring at her, quite intensely, like he was trying to figure something out.

“What, is it not normal for a wife to cook and clean for their husbands were you come from?” she shot at him, rather sarcastically. Tom blinked, and snapped out of his thoughts. He scribbled another line on the paper sheet, and sent Onyx on her way.

“Actually, no. It is not customary for a woman to do anything besides what she pleases, in those regards, for her husband.” Now it was Lilith’s turn to stare.

“Where are you from, Mars?”

“You really are not used to being pampered on, are you?”

Pampered. With an abusive husband, she didn’t even have time for a bath, much less a facial, not that she had ever had one. Her parents were Uber-Christian, and sorely believed that vanity, to normal people known as ‘taking care of your body,’ was a sin. Her cheeks flushed with….what, she did not even know. This man, however bad a first impression, was treating her better than her husband ever had, even before he began becoming violent, and it got to her. She shook her head slowly. Her wavy red hair falling around her shoulders, catching Tom eyes. He offered his arm, and they began walking down a small path, heading toward the town centre.

“Well, you’d better get used to it now, because all that I have is Lily’s, and you being Lily’s mother, and a terribly, um, beautiful woman, it is also yours. Anything you want, just name it, and you’ll have it.”

Lilith tried to protest at this, but he cut her off.

“Now, I want to talk about Lily” he was getting his confidence back, his cheek and charm too.

“I realise that you may not want anything to do with me what so ever, but I really want to be a part of our daughters, can I call her ours (?), life”

“I’m glad about that. I don’t really trust you, but Lily needs a better father than the one she’s got, and I think you might be it. Anyone would think I’m nuts, but my mother instincts tells me you’ll be good for her and for me, as long as you don’t spoil her too much.”

“You don’t know how much it means to me, hearing you say that.”

“No, I don’t, but before I trust you with her, I need to know as much as possible about you”.

“Geez, I don’t really think you want to know. It’s not like I have a rosy life, it’s really quite a depressing story. It even made Hitler cry, and he was a cruel bastard, trust me on that one.”

“You knew Hitler? How?” Lilith gasped

“He was a friend of my grandfathers, not that I ever met him, but anyway, Hitler knew my mother when she was young, and he recognized my eyes”.

“Hitler was in England?”

“Of course, he was English you know, he just spoke a damn good German, and his birth name was Grindwald.”

“But how did you meet him?”

“Due to my rather crap life situation, I ran away from the orphanage I was in, the summer after I turned twelve. A few days later I ran into him. He noticed me, and asked me what the hell I was doing living on the street, and that my grandfather would turn in his grave if he knew. Then he carried on about how I should be at home at the manor with my mother. He was rather startled when I told him she was dead, and that I didn’t know my father. He took me to the bank, and the family vault, only to find out that I didn’t have access to my money or my estates until I was seventeen, and of age. He took me in then, it was the best summer in my life so far. When he died he left everything to me, with the instructions of that I was to inherit it all at once, even if I was under age. It made my life a lot easier, I didn’t have to rely on the orphanage to get me what I needed anymore, which they usually didn’t anyway.”

“How did he die? I mean, I’ve heard the stories, suicide and all, but…”

“He was killed by the same thieving paedophile goat fucking bastard who killed my mother, only minutes after I was born, my father when I was sixteen, my nutty uncle, a girl at my school, and on top of that, he pinned it all on me!” Tom said in a loud hiss, but it took more to scare Lilith off the subject, she was hooked. Forgetting, in her excitement who she was with.

“So now everyone thinks you’re a madman killing everyone in your way?”

“Basically, yeah, and because Dumbledore is such a high profile person, naturally everyone believes him. I can’t even show up in court to plead my cause, they’d kill me on sight.”

“So, assuming you’re innocent, how the hell did you get into this mess?”

“A couple of jokes.”

“No way!” Lilith said with disbelief in her voice.

“Yeah, one thousand years ago, Salazar Slytherin made a statement about how, lets call them muggleborns, was inferior to our kind, that they were thinning out and polluting the pureblood lines. And he was right, partially now there is only six or seven pureblood line left in the world, all of them in Britain. The joke was about how we should just kill them all, then we wouldn’t have that problem. As it is with all jokes, someone took it to heart. The same thing happened when I was at school. Many people joked about it, but with me being the heir of the guy with the idea, it made them think I was serious. It all just escalated from there, I even got a nickname. Cassander made it for me ‘Voldemort’. He, and my friends knew that I only made a joke, and was paying unfairly for it. They’ve stuck by me ever since.”

“Wow, it must be great to have friends like that.”

“It is. Cassander is like a brother to me; he’s always there to back me up. He even made me godfather for his son Lucius. Oh, here is the restaurant, um, let’s go in the back, shall we.”

“Why?” she asked curiously

“I think I’ve got a tail on me.” Tom said while glancing around nervously, although that did not show.
