"A proverb says a wonder lasts nine days and then the puppy’s eyes are open."

Monday, Oct. 20, 2003

Harry bit his lip, looking at Draco before saying, “I can't come over tonight ... but I'll see you tomorrow.”

Draco frowned, looking worried. "Ron's back. Are you going to tell him?"

"’Course I am. I have to."

Draco nodded. "Good."

"But it'll be hard."

Draco nodded again, laying his hand on Harry's. "Yes, it will."

"I don't want to break his heart, but..." He looked at Draco. "I can't keep going behind his back like this."

"No, you can't." Draco put his arms around him. "Because I am no one's dirty secret."

"I wouldn't exactly call you a dirty secret. Maybe ... just a secret," Harry nodded, relaxing in Draco's embrace. "Sounds better."

"Harry," he said, tipping Harry's head up and kissing him, looking him into his eyes. "Having you in my bed is good, not to mention every other room in this place..." Draco grinned, "But I want more than that."

"A relationship, I know. I do, too. There's just something about you," Harry replied, looking back at him.

"Something," he smiled. "Always." Draco leans in to capture Harry's mouth with his.

Harry kissed him back hard before he pulled away, smirking at him. "You know what I want right now?" he whispered, looking at Draco and biting his lip.

"Tell me," Draco's look was intense, his voice a whispered command.

"Hot chocolate," Harry answered, laughing.

Draco laughed, rolling his eyes.

Later that evening, Draco sat before the fire in his library. He reclined in his most comfortable chair, tea beside him on the table, and book open his lap. He hadn’t read a word of it. Instead, he had been staring into the fire, going over his memories of the last nine days.

Nine days with Harry. Nine days in which they were rarely apart. They actually had spent less time together at work. Draco had spent most of his time in the Restricted Archives working on tracing the rituals that might be involved in the case. Well, and it didn’t hurt to stay out of sight of Ministry officials until the current drama faded. He was relieved that Granger was gone this week. Meanwhile, Harry has spent most of his time at work researching the Muggle aspects of the case.

It was their off work time that preoccupied Draco’s thoughts now. Every night Harry would go home to his flat to take care of his dog, and then come over to Draco’s townhouse. Then leave again in the morning to see to the dog before going to work. From sunset to sunrise, essentially, they had been in each other’s arms. Or other positions, Draco smirked. They had made love in nearly every room in the house. Much to the dismay of Beckett.

It had all felt like a dream -- an extremely vivid, brilliant sexy dream from which Draco didn’t want to wake. This townhouse had been his escape from the world for years. Here sneers about his family or his history were far away. Shared only with Beckett and Cocoa, he had made this place a kind of sanctuary. Now it was too quiet.

He tried not to think of Harry with Weasley right now. His memories of Weasley weren’t very good ones. Would Harry really leave his long-time friend, roommate and lover for his former enemy? Would Weasley talk him out of it? Would Weasley be angry at Harry? All these questions were swirling in head. He snapped the book shut in frustration and set it aside. He would not be able to read tonight. He doubted he would even be able to sleep tonight. He dreaded the idea of going to that bed alone now.

Harry sat down on the couch with a long sigh. Ron wasn't home as of yet, and Harry didn't know if he wanted him to come at all. He decided that he was going to talk to Ron tonight, knowing that he couldn't continue to go behind his back like he was. He glanced at the door then at the time. Waiting was probably the hardest part.

Ron walked in, his expression tired, turning wary as he saw Harry on the couch, obviously waiting for him. He had planned on pouncing him the next time he saw his mate, remembering that they hadn't seen each other in ages, but the nervous look on his face made him stop short.

"Don't say 'we have to talk,' okay? I can see that. Saying the words will make it worse." Ron sat on the couch next to Harry, keeping a foot between them.

Harry bit his lip and turned on the couch, shuffling closer. "Ron, I'm sorry about how things have been for the past week or so," he said, looking at him.

Ron nodded slowly. "Yeah, er, why haven't you been home? I know you have that murder investigation going on, but that can't be all of it." He leaned back against the couch and stared intently at Harry, waiting for his answer.

"You know I love you, right? Always will. You're my best mate, Ron, and now, I've been thinking." He took a deep breath. "I've been thinking that maybe we should go back to being just mates," he whispered.

Ron bit his lip, trying not to explode. What had he done wrong? He had been faithful and loving. "Why?" he asked.

"Because I don't want to hurt you, Ron. It's the last thing that I want to do and, the way things are going, I think I might. If I haven't already."

Ron froze. "Harry, what'd you do?" Oh, God, what was going on?

"I was with...someone else." He bit his lip hard and looked down. "Don't hate me."

Oh. That was...unexpected. "You what? With who?"

Harry started to get up, shaking his head. He was not planning on telling Ron who. "Just, someone, Ron."

Ron pushed him back on the couch. "Whatever. You want to protect them? Fine. I don't care. But, Harry, why? Why'd you do that to me?" He stood over him, looking at him intently.

Harry looked up at him. "I didn't mean for it to happen at first. And then, it just became more and I'm telling you because I love you. I don't want to lose your friendship."

Ron sighed and moved away, sitting back on the couch, looking at one of the cushions intently. "Right, then. I'm just, disappointed, Harry. And hurt...really, really hurt. But, I'm glad you told me." He looked over to where he had stored the Bulgarian Vodka. "I think...I'm going to go visit my brothers." Holding in his anger was getting harder by the moment.

Ron left.

Harry put his face in his hands.
