Thank .... Goodness?

“Harry! Ron! I’ve found it, I know what’s going on!”
Harry looked up from his homework to see Hermione burst into the common room.
“Huh?”
“The singing and dancing. It’s because of a spell, but a charm, not a curse. We were looking in the wrong spot!”
“A charm?” Harry heard Ron say incredulously. “A charm is making us act this way?”
“Well it was badly mangled, obviously.” She said huffily.
“Obviously.” Harry said with a grin. “D’you have any idea of who cast it?”
“Not yet, but I think I’ve got a pretty good idea of where to start.” Hermione said thoughtfully.

Meanwhile, Draco had been called home early over the weekend for his first ever-official Death Eater meeting. He went, albeit reluctantly. It was over quickly and Cedric soon joined him, while his father entertained his Death Eater friends.

“Ev’ry day, its Potter.”
Lucius Malfoy looked up, startled, at McNair who was nursing a glass of firewhiskey and scowling darkly.
But before he could question the behavior, however, the other Death Eaters joined him.
“Ev’ry day his following grows. All of us area ever on alert! That’s the way with Potter, spreading hope where e’er he goes. Seeking out new victims he can save!”
“Like some terrible green-eyed blizzard, throughout the land he flies!” Nott cried hysterically.
“Defaming our poor Dark Lord with his calumnies and lies!” Yelled an outraged Avery.
They all (except the elder Malfoy) began again.
“He lies! Save us from The Boy! Shield us so we won’t be hexed! Give us warning, where he strike next? Where will he strike next? Where will he strike next?”
Lucius simply rolled his eyes.

Draco, having sat through the meeting, was left to his own devices. Which included trying to make his current boyfriend come around to the idea that this Death Eater business wasn’t all that bad.
“Listen Cedric, as terrifying as terror is, can’t you put that aside for one day? To celebrate! Oh what a celebration we’ll have today!”

“Thank goodness!” Chorused the Death Eaters as Voldemort apperated directly into the study.
“Fin’lly a day that’s totally Harry Potter-free!” He-who-must-not-be-named hissed in a silabant murmur that sounded vaguely musical.
“We couldn’t be happier! Thank goodness!” Sang the Death Eaters as Lucius looked on the scene in utter horror.

“Yes, we couldn’t be happier, right dear?” Draco sang hesitantly. Cedric looked reluctant. “Couldn’t be happier, right here. Look what we’ve got, a fairy-tale plot, our very own happy ending. Where we couldn’t be happier....true dear?”
Cedric smiled, but it seemed just the tiniest bit forced.
“Couldn’t be happier, and we’re happy to share our ending vicariously with all the world! He couldn’t be handsomer, I couldn’t be humbler, because happy is what happens when all your dreams come true”
Smiling beatifically, Draco led Cedric down the hall towards the rooms that held his father and the other Death Eaters.

“Uh, Draco? Where are we going?”
“To talk with father, silly. Don’t you think it’s about time we told him about us?” Draco said, frowning slightly.
“Of course I do, but Draco, your father...isn’t he a...well...”
“Yes?”
“A...Death Eater?” Cedric asked in a small voice.
“Of course he is,” Draco said, serious again, but still not sure where the trouble lay. “as am I.”
He showed his Dark Mark to Cedric, who became an alarming shade of white, but said nothing.

They entered.

“And Draco, we are...er...happy for you. As your father I have striven to ensure that all those here know the story of your initiation. The day you were first summoned to an audience with our Lord, and all though he would not tell you why initially. When you bowed there at his feet, he decreed you’d ne’er repeat, the mistakes that we had made....officially! Then with a murderous squeal, that nasty Potter burst from concealment. Where he had been lurking serrupticially!”
Lucius looked more irritated that he had been reduced to bursting into song that the fact that he was revealing certain facts to the only non-Death Eater in the room.

“I heard he has an extra eye, that always remains awake!”
“I hear that he can shed his skin as easily as a snake!”
“I hear that some rebels of the Light are giving him food and shelter!”
“I hear that his soul is damn pure, no Evil can beat him!”

“What?!” Cedric cried.
“Beat him! Please! Somebody beat him!” All but Cedric and Draco replied.
“Do you hear that?” Cedric said incredulously to Draco. “Evil will beat him? Do they really believe that?”
“Cedric!” Draco hissed, worried what his father would say. “Oh yes, thanks plenty dearest.”
He sent the distraught Hufflepuff down to the kitchens.
“He’s gone to fetch me a refreshment. He’s so thoughtful that way!”
The older men went back to their conversations.
“That’s why...” Draco began quietly. “...I couldn’t be happier. No, I couldn’t be happier. Though it is, I admit, the tiniest bit unlike I anticipated. But I couldn’t be happier, simply couldn’t be happier. Well...not simply. Cause getting your dreams, strange as it seems, is a little...well...complicated. There’s a kind of a sort of a...cost. There’s a couple of things get...lost. There are bridges you cross, you didn’t know you crossed, until you crossed! And if that joy, that thrill, doesn’t thrill like you think it will. Still...with this perfect finale, the cheers and the bally-hoo, who wouldn’t be happier? So I couldn’t be happier! Because happy is what happens when all your dreams come true! Well, isn’t’ it? Happy is what happens when all your dreams come true!”
“We love you Draco, if we may be so frank!” Chorused the Death Eaters. Raising their glasses in a toast.
“Thank goodness!”
“For all this evilness we know who we have to thank. Thank goodness! That means the Dark Lord, Draco...”
“And finance!” Draco reminded them. He frowned, it sure was taking a long time for Cedric to fetch their drinks.
“They couldn’t be eviler! He couldn’t be lovelier! We couldn’t be luckier!”
“I couldn’t be happier!”
“Thank goodness!”
“Today! Thank goodness for today!”

The final refrain faded out and Lucius Malfoy, quite red in the face, began bellowing for everyone to get out right now!
Draco smirked, then scurried out to see what was taking Cedric so long. He arrived a few minutes later in the deserted kitchens, bewildered that Cedric was nowhere to be found.
A quivering house elf handed him a short note.

“Draco,” It began. “I am not sure I will ever be able to condone your acceptance of the Dark Mark, nor do I understand how doing such a thing could possibly aid in Lord Voldemort’s downfall. Goodbye, your loving Cedric.”

Draco crumpled the note in his fist. He could once again see, in his mind’s eye, the condemnation in Harry’s eyes. He was glad he had not been witness to Cedric’s.
Oh Cedric. He thought bleakly. If only you knew.
