Chapter 8

Harry realized that Severus was intent on setting off after the man right now, and killing him straight away. He caught the older man's arm, and held on despite the glare shot at him along with a growl and flash of fangs.
"No. You can't go after him now. If you kill him like this, people are just going to assume that you really were a death eater, and you are going to end up thrown in Azkaban, or worse. Professor Dumbledore left us his evidence for a reason, we can destroy Fudge without you risking yourself. Please."
Severus stared at him for a long moment, breathing hard, his eyes flashing, then slowly, the fangs withdrew, and his breathing evened out as he hung his head for a moment to gain control.
"Very well. We will return to the dungeon, examine the contents of the box that Albus left for us, and plan what we are to do about Fudge."
Harry sighed with relief that the man had listened to him, and glanced at the portrait, where Albus's image was once again watching them with a twinkling gaze.
"What should we do about the portrait?" He asked.
"It must be kept secure until we are sure that Fudge is no longer a problem. This is the safest place for the moment." Severus said, looking at the image of his former mentor.
"Quite right dear boy. Off you both go, I'm sure there are better things you could be doing than hanging around in this musty vault."
Severus picked up the box that Albus had left for them, and he and Harry left the vault, securing the door behind them.
"I wonder where Fawkes has gone." Harry said a little sadly, looking a little sadly at the barren perch behind the desk.
"There are other things missing here too Harry, the sorting hat, Griffindor's sword, the enchanted book and quill that sends out the letters for the first years. I'm sure Albus left everything in a safe place until the right time."
"OK. Let's get out of here. It doesn't feel right being in here without him." Harry said. He figured when Severus didn't mock him or disagree that he felt just as uncomfortable.
They headed back down to the dungeon, cautious incase Fudge had left a spy there, but apparently the treacherous worm had been convinced by Harry's statement that he would deal with anyone who didn't belong in the school.
Entering the warm security of the potion master's quarters, Harry sank into the chair that he was quickly beginning to think of as his and closed his eyes for a moment.
Severus sat on the edge of the sofa across the table and set the box down on the polished wood surface.
"Are you ready to do this now?" Severus asked, looking at the slightly defeated pose the boy had adopted. Harry opened one eye and looked at him.
"How do we know who we can trust now?" He asked in a very quiet voice.
"Everyone we were sure of is gone, and the man in authority we should be able to trust is the biggest threat to us now that Voldemort is gone. What do we do, who do we trust?" Harry finished, the sadness growing stronger in his voice as he spoke.
Severus stood and rounded the table, perching on the edge of it to reach out and pull Harry to the edge of the chair.
"We trust each other, we watch each other's backs at all times until we know that those we encounter are not our enemies."
Harry stared into the dark eyes so close to his, and without a second thought, he leaned forward the last couple of inches and pressed his lips to the other man's.
Severus froze for one startled moment, but before the younger man could panic at his stillness and pull away, he took control of the clumsy, innocent kiss, deepening it, opening his mouth and brushing his tongue over Harry's lips. Harry got the hint and opened to him, allowing the skilled, questing tongue entry, tentatively meeting it with his own. Their tongues coiled together for a long moment, and both were slightly breathless as Severus gently pulled back.
Harry opened his eyes slowly, blinking stupidly for a second. Whatever he had imagined it would feel like all the months they were training, that had been a thousand times better, more intense.
"Yes. I trust us." Harry agreed softly, meeting those dark eyes once more. Severus nodded, reaching out one hand to gently caress Harry's warm, flushed cheek.
"Good."
Harry's eyes closed again, and he sighed.
"We can't do this yet, can we?"
"No, it's too soon. When it's over, and Fudge is gone, once everyone is secure. Then we can be together as we want to be."
"Even if I want you to claim me?"
"If you're sure, when the time comes, then yes, I will even claim you."
"Then I can wait." Harry said, turning his head to kiss the palm of the hand still carressing his cheek.
"We bring him and anyone supporting him down, together, just like working to defeat Voldemort." Harry vowed, his determination back full force now he knew there was something to go on for.
"Then, we should see what Albus left for us." Severus said, reluctantly pulling back and going back to the other side of the table, opening the lid of the box.
Inside, there was an envelope, and a small packet of papers. The envelope bore the legend 'Last will and testement' on the front in Dumbledore's familiar cursive script. Severus put it aside, that one could wait until they had brought down Fudge for him. The other was tied with cord, and Severus pulled a knife from his boot to cut it. Inside were bundles of parchment.
Severus split them between himself and Harry, and in comfortable silence, they started to read.

They kissed, they kissed. Doing a little Happy Dance. Sigh, then agreed not to do anything else until they have dealt with the traitor. How inconsiderate of them.

The general consensus of the reviews so far seems to be.

1) People want a happy ending. Sev and Harry agreed to this one.
2) Fudge deserves to die. Again, this got the boy's vote.
2a) Fudge would give Sev a serious stomach upset if he ate him. Sev agrees with this one,
he says he wouldn't eat that poisonous little toad if he were the last food source on
earth.

Who am I to argue with the reviwers and our favorite boys, lol.

HAPPY NEW YEAR. May you all have all the luck and love you desire in the coming year.
