Christmas joy
The following week, Professor Snape let Hermione alone. He never appeared in the lab or in his office when she was around and always left her instructions on her project and potions so she could not find an excuse to go looking for him.
Severus decided he had been too harsh with the girl. He wanted her in his bed, though the fact that she nearly discovered his secret unnerved him. He’d had enough pity and insults in his life; he did not want to go over another deception when not finding the cure for the curse. He had the perfect idea to make Hermione more agreeable to him, but it would have to wait until Christmas.

Christmas was only a week away, and the castle was already decorated. Nine huge Christmas trees were placed in the Great Hall, and the Entrance was glittering with small shooting stars which sparkled every time someone walked by them. Hermione loved Christmas at Hogwarts, it looked so magical!
The problems with Professor Snape were still there, and she thought it would be nice to give him a Christmas present to lighten his mood. She still felt a bit attracted to the man, but after those two outbursts she was more reluctant to seek his company or think about him in a non-teacher-of-hell way. She needed to go to Hogsmeade and empty her account buying presents; she already had Ginny’s, so that would not be a problem.
Saturday found the girls in the middle of Quidditch Dreams getting presents for Harry and Ron. They had not written once since they left for training, but Hermione still wanted to give them something.
‘Hermione, why do we bother?’ Ginny complained for the eleventh time that day. ‘They won’t even buy us anything. You know they always forget!’
‘I know… but they’re still my best friends and it wouldn’t be fair for them.’
‘Oh, O.K. I should buy something for Draco now, too.’
‘What did you have in mind?’ Hermione asked, totally curious.
‘I think I’ll buy something normal to open when we’re all there, maybe some broom riding gloves. And then something kinky to be opened only in my bed!’ Ginny started laughing at Hermione’s face. She was not used to Ginny talking so openly about having sex with Malfoy yet. ‘Oh, c’mon Hermione. Don’t be such a stiff old lady! Anyone would think you’re my mum’s age.’
‘I’m not! You just surprised me!’
‘Are you going to buy something for Snape?’
‘Yes, I was thinking of something for the lab. He’s been quite distant since the incident in his library.’
‘Yeah, but buy him something nice. Draco wouldn’t tell me what the problem was with that curse, but I’m sure he knows. I could ask him again after a round of mind-blowing sex; he might tell me then.’
Hermione laughed and said, ‘I should shag Snape too and see if he gives me better marks for the projects, shouldn’t I?’
Both girls continued with their shopping until they could not spend a sickle more.

On Christmas Eve, the staff and apprentices had dinner together after the students had gone back home. It was a tradition to open their presents together. Snape was the most vocal one about his discomfort, having to publicly acknowledge his distaste for whatever trinkets the other teachers may have bought him. It was especially hard to share the joy of the festivities without Albus Dumbledore; Snape always complained about the socks he constantly received from the old man, but he really missed them. Dumbledore’s presents were a reminder that he was not alone, but now he was not expecting any other presents apart from the Old Ogden’s Firewhiskey from Minerva.
Hermione, Ginny and Draco gave and received presents from everyone but Snape. He hated the fact that everyone could comment about his taste, so he decided to let the house elves handle the presents. Hermione was keeping a close eye on the Potions Master; she wanted to see his reaction when he opened her present. She saw him taking his gifts, and his surprise at receiving three presents was only betrayed by the raising of his eyebrow. He was expecting that Draco would possibly buy him something, but Granger giving him something really threw him off. Snape decided to open them in his chambers, not wanting the other teachers to ask who the presents were from.
Hermione was utterly disappointed by the fact that he left without opening her gift and also by not receiving anything from him. Had she really expected him to change that much? She made her excuses and left the meeting. She wanted to be alone and wallow in self-pity for a while.
When Hermione reached her chamber, she saw a small present on her bed. She saw a note on top of it and read:
This is a small token that surely won’t make up for my unpardonable behaviour, but I hope you would reconsider and acquiesce to working with me in order to determine a solution to the mystery of the curse you read about. This book will help you pass the time until then.
Sincerely,
Severus Snape
She opened the present and could not believe her eyes. It was a first edition of a medieval treaty on Potions written in Arabic and Jewish, of which there were only six copies in the whole world. She felt her breath catching and her heart beating harder than ever. This would have cost him a fortune to buy and even longer to find it. She had to see him. Now.
Severus Snape heard the loud pounding on his office door and went to open it. He was not in the mood to talk to any of the other teachers, much less to one of the students left around the castle. He was not surprised to see it was Hermione who tried to break down his door with her fists, but he could not believe it when found his neck and waist surrounded by the bushy-haired Gryffindor girl. She was crying and thanking him repeatedly while hanging onto his neck with her arms and holding herself up with her legs around his waist. He felt heat rising, and his arms itched to carry her off to his private quarters, taking all the time in the world to make love to her.
