Chapter 8: General Outrage

            The owl
that had Hermione’s letter arrived at Dumbledore’s desk just as he came out of
the shower. He gave the owl something for its troubles and then extracted the
letter from the owl’s beak. He opened it and read:

Dear Dumbledore,

            I’m sorry
to be writing to you like this, but I don’t think that I would have the guts to
do it in your office, not with those twinkling eyes of yours. It would make me
feel worse about this then I already do so I’m writing to you and letting you
make any arrangements that you might see fit. I went to the Burrow and told the
Weasley’s about my marriage to Severus and everyone, except those that weren’t
in the room and Mrs. Weasley, lost it. They called me all sorts of horrible
names and I just can live like that.

            I’m sorry
for causing you all this trouble, but I’m afraid that I being in the castle
would cause problems. I’m staying in the apartment over a shop and please don’t
come over and make me change my mind because it won’t work. I know what I’m
doing and this decision is final. Find someone else to be Head Girl because I
don’t want it.

Thanks for listening,

Hermione

            Dumbledore
sighed and put the letter down. He hated the idea that Harry, Ron, and whoever
else had made life hard on her. He put the letter away and then wrote back to
Hermione, letting the owl finish doing its job. Now he had to inform the staff
that Hermione would no longer be gracing the halls of the school.

   “I can’t believe
you three did that,” Mr. Weasley said to Harry, Ron, and Ginny when he had
calmed down enough to speak. “Hermione didn’t need you to tell her what you
thought about the life that she’s leading. She’s an adult and can make her own
choices.”

None of them spoke.

   “When you three
return to Hogwarts, I want you three to tell Hermione that you’re sorry.”

   “S-S-Sorry,” Ron
stammered. “I don’t think so.”

Mr. Weasley grabbed him and forced him against his face.

   “You will do
exactly what I say, Ronald Weasley.”

Ron said nothing and Mr. Weasley let him go. Suddenly Ron
turned around and headed for the door.

   “And where do you
think your going, young man?” Mrs. Weasley snapped.

   “Out, I need to
think.”

And he was gone.

            Several
hours later when everyone was in bed (Ron hadn’t returned) both husband and
wife sat alone. Both of them were upset about how Hermione’s nice visit had
turned into a total nightmare for her.

   “You know they
remind me of us,” Molly said. “Remember when everyone thought we were being
stupid to marry because you didn’t have any money to take care of me.”

Arthur grinned.

   “We had to stay in
my parents home until we found this place,” he added. “Oh gods, I never thought
I would meet two people that reminded me of us. God this war made people do
things they normally wouldn’t have done.”

Molly patted her husband’s shoulder.

   “But at least they
both know what they want to do with their lives,” she said. “And that’s what’s
important.”

Arthur smiled sweetly at her.

   “Ya, that’s all
that matters right now,” he said. “So I wonder when she’s going to have

the first little Snape.”

Molly laughed at him.

   “I don’t know, but
I’m going to be there when it happens,” Molly said. “No one will keep me from
seeing that kid being born.”

Arthur had no doubts about that.

   “So what’s this
meeting all about?” asked Professor McGonagall.

   “It seems that Hermione
isn’t going to return for her final year,” he told her along with the other
staff members.

   “What,” everyone
said at the same time.

Several Professors shook their heads.

   “But why not?”
asked Madam Hooch.

Dumbledore sighed.

   “It seems that
Harry, Ron, and whoever happened to be there insulted Hermione to the point
that she refuses to return to us when term starts. She wants us to make arrangements
so that she can get her lessons and then take her exams.”

   “But
what about the position of Head Girl?”
Severus asked.

   “She doesn’t want
it,” Dumbledore responded. “She’s staying in an apartment above a shop and
wants her lessons owled.”

   “But truly the
comments were that bad,” Hagrid said.

Dumbledore gave him a strange look.

   “If Hermione doesn’t
want to return for her final year then they must have been bad,” Dumbledore
told him. “Personally I don’t think that this will be a problem for Hermione.
We’ll just owl her her lessons and then see what happens.”

No one said anything.

            Hermione
got her reply back from the Headmaster. She opened it and read, hoping that it
was good.

Dear Hermione,

I’m sorry that you won’t return for your final year as we’ll
all miss roaming the halls and such. I’m also disappointed that you won’t be
our Head Girl, as I had recommended you for that post. We shall owl your
lessons to you and I hope that you do well in whatever you’re going to be
doing.

Sincerely,

Headmaster A. Dumbledore

Hermione felt like crying.

   “Can you believe
they did that to my wife,” Severus snapped as he went to get things ready for
Hermione to start getting her Potion lessons owled.

   “I know,” Remus
said. “I did think that something like that would happen to Hermione.”

He glared at him.

   “Well trust me when
it comes to Weasley, it can happen,” Severus snarled. “Now Hermione doesn’t
want to be in the castle because of what happened.”

Remus shook his head.

   “Do you think we
should talk to them?”

   “No,” Severus
snapped. “If Potter, Weasley, and whatever wants to act like jerks then that’s
fine with me. But I’m going to be even harder then normal on them. I’m not having
my wife be put out to pasture.”

Remus couldn’t argue with that.
