Chapter 7- Page 478
Disclaimer: reminder-H.P. Not Mine. Thank the lovely and talented JKR for giving us such a wonderful world and wonderful characters to manipulate and play with to our hearts content. *ahhh*
A/N: Quote in ‘Malfoy Family Tree’ is also not mine. It is from ‘Mérope,’ written by Voltaire in 1743.
Harry blinked his eyes open, sitting up and rubbing the sleep away he quickly scanned his surroundings. It was evening, he wasn’t sure exactly what time, and he was back in his own room. He stretched languorously and fell backward, nuzzling into his black silk pillowcase which, oddly enough, reminded him of Draco’s trousers. Normally the pillowcases reminded Harry of Sirius, considering it had, after all, been Sirius’ room. Harry moved into it this summer and had made a point not to change one thing about the room, short of cleaning it and adding his own clothing, so that every time he woke up and every night before he went to sleep he would think of Sirius. Sirius was in the grey-blue bed hangings and the uncovered hard wood floors and the black bed set and silk Persian carpets of various sizes and states of decomposition. Harry could feel Sirius in the deep scratches on the two mahogany armoires where Padfoot used to pass his time idly scratching at them. The room was a cenotaph to Sirius and also a fresh reminder of Voldemort’s treachery, not that Harry needed one. It was just one more good reason for Harry to kill him and end this ridiculous war. Harry had remained in this room because he still felt like Sirius’ death was his fault and he wanted a reminder everyday he woke up and Draco managed to even take that from him, it irritated the sable haired youth.
/Bloody wanker makes me miserable even when he’s not around to cannibalize me. /
At that Harry reached for his neck and was thankful that when he checked, said neck was warm and dry and blissfully free of holes. Harry also felt more rested and energetic then before as well considering he no longer felt in danger of passing out. He grabbed his wand off the trunk at the foot of the bed, whoever had moved appeared to think it was as good a place as any. He checked the time.
“Quis vicis.”
8:52 p.m. Harry couldn’t believe it; he had slept away the entire day, well into the evening. Not only had he not been able to brush his teeth or take a shower but he had missed all three meals. Sighing he rolled out of bed and headed for his bathroom. Figuring people would be worried about him, presuming the bloodsucking ferret told anyone, Harry cast a silencing charm and a lock on the bathroom door; he didn’t need anyone rushing in and interrupting his bath. He brushed his teeth the muggle way, old habits die hard, and began picking out and assortment of glass bottles and jars he kept specifically for these high stress and annoying situations.
The bathroom was all white porcelain and gleaming charmed taps and faucets and gilded mirrors. Harry hated it, or he said he did. Although sometimes he liked to wallow in the lushness of it all, taking long bubble bathes and soaking in the hot, fragrant water, filled with calming salts and oils. He decided it was rather girly so he would keep this practice a part of his private life, his own little relaxation secret. After taking a luxurious bath, shorter then normal but it always felt luxurious to Harry when he was in the deep and narrow clawed tub, he toweled himself dry. It was 9:30, he felt silly dirtying another entire set of clothes for so little time so he opted for a pair of muggle jeans, sans knickers.
/Who’s gonna know? /
As dressed as he felt like getting at the moment and curious as to what had happened exactly Harry headed for the door. He was inches away from the bronze handle when he heard voices in the hall. Not just any voices but it sounded like Malfoy senior and junior arguing in the hall, about him no less. Harry crept forward and crouched by the door jam, pressing his ear against the wall.
“…with Potter!” Lucius’ angry voice was near a whisper. Harry could practically hear Malfoy rolling his eyes.
“Yes father. Obviously or I wouldn’t have called.”
“And how is the brat.”
/Brat? Has he met Draco? /
“Fine, sleeping I suppose. Do you care?”
“Don’t toy with me Draco of course I care.” Harry heard Draco let out an exasperated huff. “Maybe not personally, but for my own intents and purposes yes. Have you contacted anyone else?”
“Dumbledore and-”
/And? /
“And?” Lucius sounded prepared for the worst. As if Draco had some sort of direct link to evil, like a private line to Voldemort.
“And the Weasleys.” Harry almost burst out laughing. His hand flew to his mouth as he pictured the fire call between the Weasley house and pompous Draco ‘I’m a hypocrite because I’m not a pureblood but I hate mudbloods and blood traitors’ Malfoy.
“Draco, did you inform them of your situation?”
/…? /
“Yes.” Draco’s response was, in Harry’s opinion, hesitant at best, bloody scared shitless at worse.
/Why? /
“Why?” Harry was becoming quickly disturbed at the similarity between his and Lucius Malfoy’s train of thought.
“Well I thought that since Dumbledore was going to tell them anyway.”
“Silence.” The hall was quiet as death. Harry could hear his own heartbeat, then the faint but familiar swish of the floo network opening the grate. “They’re here. Honestly Draco, did you think they wouldn’t know what this meant. Now they not only know of your…delicate condition-”
/Draco Malfoy-delicate? Yeah, right. /
“-but they also know of your situation concerning Potter. As if they won’t think it odd that Harry came to your room so early in the morning? You blood lusting on your first night here? You didn’t think the Granger girl would figure out that you called Potter with the Veela mating charm and more importantly that he responded?”
/What? /
“It doesn’t mean anything. I’m not full blood.” Even to Harry Draco sounded like he was grasping at straws.
“You’re damn close enough Draco. Your mother is beside herself, she saw the same time I did, during that little show you put on when we arrived. But this? What do we do now?”
“Nothing.” Draco’s words sounded empty and cold but Harry didn’t have time to analyze because he heard shouts of his name and loud footsteps coming up the stairs. Apparently the Malfoys noticed as well because their conversation was cut short with a curt, “We’ll finish this later,” from Mr. Malfoy. Harry listened to the footsteps approaching with growing resentment; he had wanted to find out what the hell the Malfoys had been talking about. Words like ‘called’ and ‘Veela mating charm’ floated around Harry’s head as he prepared himself for the assault, he decided to ask Hermione as soon as possible.
Standing and moving away from the door, which promptly burst open to reveal to red headed witches, Harry grinned. Giving a slight wave Harry braced himself as the two women rushed forward. Mrs. Weasley began checking his neck and face as Ginny cast a series of what sounded like medi-witch spells.
“Hi.” Harry managed to choke out while being furiously checked over. Mrs. Weasley paused and hugged him tightly.
“Hi Harry dear, we just wanted to make sure that Malfoy didn’t do any irreversible damage is all. Be done in a jiff love.” She smiled sweetly and released him. Ginny smiled too, but it did not reach her eyes, which felt cold to him. She simply continued casting charms and nodded to her mother when she needed to. Harry was about to ask if she was alright when a knocking noise came from his left. He turned to see a smug looking Draco Malfoy standing in the doorway in front of a smiling Albus Dumbledore and scowling Lucius Malfoy.
/At least they don’t look bored. There’s nothing worse then a bored Malfoy. /
They had a tendency to whine. Neither would admit it. Mrs. Weasley looked up at the knock with a positively scandalized expression, but nodded tightly when she noticed Dumbledore. Harry couldn’t see Ginny’s face but her shoulders tensing were clear enough.
***
/Potter looks scrumptious all scruffy and fresh. /
Everyone was looking at Draco, who only had eyes for Harry.
/Relax, relax, relax, relax…/
He traipsed through the room and confidently wedged himself between Harry and the Weasley women.
“Harry.”
“Malfoy.”
/This is an okay start. /
“I just want to apologize for treating you the way I did. I should have mentioned that might happen so you didn’t become an unwilling donor.” He threw on a more charming version of the Malfoy smirk, “But now you know.” Harry grinned.
/He’s grinning!!/
“Now I know. Apology accepted.”
/Yay! I mean, right. Good. Mission accomplished. Oh shut up and say something smart. /
“See you ‘round Potter.” Malfoy turned on his heel and walked out of the room with a noticeable bounce in his step. He didn’t turn back, but if he had he would have seen Harry smiling. As it was he continued across the hall and left Potter to deal with the company, which Draco knew would become larger in size. He lay on his bed and was starting to get comfortable when a knock sounded.
/Father? No, father never knocks. / He didn’t have to figure out who it was before answering because a voice form the other side sounded immediately.
“Mr. Malfoy, may I come in.”
/If you must. /
“Enter.” He figured at least be courteous. Dumbledore sauntered in and smiled, sitting on the edge of the bed.
“I take your father has explained our concerns about your situation.”
“Well he’s voiced his. What are yours?”
/Why is this suddenly everybody’s business? /
“I worry for yours and Harry’s safety. That is all.”
“I won’t hurt Harry.”
“Not willingly Mr. Malfoy. But he may unwillingly hurt you. You are off to a good start. But you will have to woo him.”
/woo? /
“I’m sorry, but I’m not wooing anything.” He was resolute.
“Mr. Malfoy, you could hurt yourself if you don’t try. You know this, and Harry could also hurt you without knowing it if he denies you.”
/Deny me. Who can? /
“I understand.” Dumbledore smiled, his eye’s twinkling infuriatingly.
“Why don’t you check page…478 I think, of ‘The Malfoy Family Tree, A History’? You might find it useful.”
/How does he? /
“How do you-?”
“I know many things Mr. Malfoy.” He nodded and got up from the bed.
“Lemon Drop?”
“No sir.” When Dumbledore closed the door Draco was out of bed faster then you can say Accio. He was at his trunk and pulling out his family crest box. Lifting the leather bound book from its metal home was exciting. Every Malfoy had a copy, literally an exact copy of the original that updated itself regularly. The pages were yellowed but would not crumble and the binding was worn but would not tear. Draco ran his hand over the cover before opening the edition.
/page 478. 4-7-8. Ah Ha, 478! /
A beautiful image of Cupid’s bow and arrow was drawn on the page with the signature Francois Malfoy at the bottom. Along the shaft of the arrow itself was a printed message that Dumbledore had obviously meant Draco to see.
/Crazy old man might have a point. /
“IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO CONQUER, ONE MUST KNOW HOW TO SEDUCE.”
