Epilogue
Severus wore his best dress robes over the fine hand-stitched shirt and looked out over the sea of faces. His habitual scowl was nowhere to be seen as he stood waiting. His sharp ears picked up snippets of whispered conversation.
“I can hardly believe the change in him”
“Who would have thought they’d be such a match?”
“He’s not bad looking when he’s not so cranky”
Severus, for once, ignored them, instead reflecting pleasantly on his conversation with Hermione at dinner the night before. They had dined alone in their chambers. She had leaned over, covering his hand with hers.
“It gets easier with practice, love.”
“What does?” He went warm every time she used the endearment. He suspected that was why she used it so often.
“Telling me that you love me.”
“You know how I feel.” He took a sip of wine.
“Yes, but I’d still like to hear you say it…eventually.”
He shifted slightly uncomfortably in his seat.
“It’s just three words, Severus.”
She knows how I feel. Why does she want the blasted words too?
“Please, love? I promise it won’t kill you.”
He went warm again. Well, maybe for her, after all, they were just words, right?
“I…love you.”
He watched in amazement at the way her face softened and her eyes went liquid. Wordlessly she leaned across the table to kiss him, a breathless, burning kiss that sent shockwaves through his body. It surprised him at how easy the words were to say after all. The sight of her radiant face made him wish he had said it before now. Maybe he should practice saying it everyday.
And now he stood waiting for her. He could hardly believe this beautiful and brilliant young woman would become his wife today. Severus was grateful for her tenacity and determination that had ultimately led them here.
Strains of music filled the air and finally he saw her. His beautiful Hermione.
She moved towards him with infinite grace.
