Chapter 8: Interview with a Potions Master

Chapter 8: Interview with a Potions Master

Takes place right after Ginny and Neville finish there school record search.

“I’m glad you had a moment for us Professor Slughorn,” begins Ginny as she sits down in Professor Slughorn’s sitting room. “We stopped by because we have some questions that only you can answer.”

“Really,” responds Professor Slughorn.

Ginny pulls out the picture of Snape, Lily Evans, and Narcissa Malfoy in Slughorn’s laboratory and hands it to him. “I think Harry and Malfoy would find this tidbit of information interesting…,” begins Ginny.

“What,” sneers Professor Slughorn, “That there was a time before their existence. A time when I had a “Golden Trio” and let me assure Miss Weasley my “Goldren Trio” was the envy of Lord Voldermort himself.”

Ginny and Neville looked at each other, shook their heads, and say, “Huh!”

“Lily, Severus, and Narcissa worked on some “private” experiments using my laboratory as a “base of operations” if you will. The talent of those three was amazing. Severus and Narcissa were in Slytherin so it was easy to obtain their services, but Lily was a tad difficult. However, she was curious about our world and after that it was quite easy to convince her to work with Severus and Narcissa. They became fast friends. Narcissa trusted Severus because he was in Slytherin, Lily trusted him because he was a halfblood, and Severus understood both young ladies because he knew the worlds from which they came. They combined all of the crafts of magic into some of the most powerful tools I have every seen….”meanders Professor Slughorn.

“You mean they were working together. For what purpose?” questions Neville.

“Why my young Mister Longbottom to see what they could create, to push their very imaginations. Did you know that Severus and Lily enticed Narcissa into working with them by turning James Potter and Sirus Black into girls. Lily slipped the potion to them in their pumpkin juice. To take suspicion off of Severus she slipped in your father, Frank’s and several other young men’s as well. After that stunt Narcissa complied readily with all of their ideas. I miss Lily. She always kept things lively. Severus was different around the girls. I mean he still had a mouth on him, but it was toned down. They were good for him. I suspect he and Narcissa still grieve for Lily. But that can’t be all that you wanted to know,” finishes Professor Slughorn.

“Well what do you know about Lily?” asks Ginny.

“She was powerful. Voldermort himself had tried recruiting her as he did Severus. Yes, you heard me correctly he was recruiting muggleborns and half-bloods with magically powers,” continues Professor Slughorn.

“But why?” questions Neville.

“Simple, my dear young man POWER! They both came from very powerful magical families even though they are muggle. Severus’ father Tobias was extremely talented. He studied potions under Dumbledore and Nicholas Flamel. Lily’s mother, Cassandra, created the most marvelous transfigurations. Why Lily’s sister exhibited wondrous talent until she dropped out her Fourth Year,” mentions Professor Slughorn.

“WAIT!” interrupts Ginny, “Are you saying Harry’s aunt is a witch?”

“Well of course she is. Where do you think Harry gets it from…James! Doubtful! James was quite like Lucius Malfoy except when it came to the muggle question…otherwise they were very much alike, arrogant, intelligent, manipulative, handsome, and charming. He was not magically ungifted, but he was not a heavyweight by any stretch of the imagination. Plus, he could be a bully when he and Sirus got together. Why at one time Lucius considered placing a betrothal bid out for Lily before he married Narrissa,” laughs Professor Slughorn.

“I guess this puts the situation in a totally different perspective,” alludes Neville.

“Oh, yea!” breathes Ginny, “Professor is there anything else you think we should know? Anything more suprises!”

“Well, this may be a breach of confidence, but I do know that Severus was involved with Lily and Narcissa at one time or another,” chuckles Professor Slughorn.

“Do you mean…,” utters Neville, “I think Severus Snape just became my hero.”

Professor Slughorn winks at Neville and says, “I know what you mean. It was amusing walking into the laboratory sometimes. One never knew what would be going on…”

“Oh please!” says Ginny as she rolls her eyes.

“Do you think Draco knows?” asks Neville.

“Doubtful. Narcissa and Severus have tended to be discrete, plus I doubt Lucius thinks she would throw him over for Severus. Interesting…anyway, have I answered all of your questions?” asks P:rofessor Slughorn.

“Yes, except did Snape hate Lily for marrying James?” inquires Ginny.

“Severus would never hold anything against Lily. Now would he kill James Potter for hurting Lily, absolutely and Narcissa would help him dispose of the body. Now that is friendship. Now off with you, I am an old man who needs his nap, “ says Professor Slughorn.

The pair bid him good day and exit his rooms.
