Laying the Blame
Chapter Eight
Lucius leaned back in his chair. He was tired of working and was currently taking a break from the pile of paperwork stacked on his desk.
He closed his eyes and thought of her.
She had been so eager. So ready for him.
Pity.
The time was not quite right. He had almost given into temptation and taken her right there on the kitchen floor.
Just thinking about her standing in the kitchen in her nightgown, her body responding to his touch, aroused him. He growled in irritation.
Where was his resolve? His control? He was not an inexperienced teenager with his first crush. He was Lucius Malfoy and he would not be driven solely by his desires. He needed to think of something else. Something that would diminish his current dilemma.
At that moment, his son unexpectedly stormed into the room.
Well, that certainly solved that little problem.
“Father!” the young wizard spat. His face was etched with fury.
In contrast, Lucius looked bored.
Inside, he was torn between anger at being addressed so by the youngster and interest in what could infuriate his normally placid son.
“What is it, Draco?” he said smoothly. “I am busy, so please make this quick.”
His only son stood in the room staring at him, his chest heaving with indignation.
“You know why I am here!”
Lucius stood. He no longer towered over the boy but that didn’t matter; he was still able to instill fear with only a look.
However, this time Draco was not cowering. He was actually standing up to his father.
How interesting.
“I am afraid I have no idea what you are on about, so either enlighten me, or leave my office immediately.”
Draco gritted his teeth.
“I could not ever imagine that these words would come out of my mouth, but…”
“Just get on with it,” Lucius said impatiently.
“Why in the hell aren’t you fucking my wife!”
The room was quiet. Lucius stared at his son in astonishment. How dare him!
“I beg your pardon?” His voice was dangerously quiet.
“I know you want to. I can see the way you are pursuing her.”
“What I do is my business, Draco.”
“She is my wife,” he responded angrily.
“Then you fuck her.”
The young wizard slammed his hands down on the desk in frustration.
“I will not have you treating Hermione like this,” he continued angrily.
“Why Draco,” Lucius breathed in a deceptively soft voice. “I don’t remember ever seeing this much passion…even when you were defending that Potter brat. How interesting.”
“That is because Harry is safe from your clutches, Father,” he responded in a seething voice.
“Make up your mind, boy,” Lucius tormented him. “Either you want me to bed the girl or you don’t. You can’t have it both ways.”
Draco had no answer to that. The truth was he didn’t know what he wanted. He wanted Hermione to be happy but he also wanted her safe from the narcissistic bastard who raised him.
“Does it even matter what I want?” Draco demanded. “The reason you chose Hermione for my wife was so you could have her for yourself.”
Now the boy had gone too far.
“That is ridiculous!” Lucius hissed. “If I had wanted her, I would have just taken her. There was no need for you to marry her.”
The older wizard took a calming breath.
“What I need is an heir,” he stated once more in control. “I would prefer that heir come from you.”
He paused for effect as he watched his son’s expression change to one of understanding.
“Surely, Draco,” he continued, raising one eyebrow. “I don’t have to do everything myself.”
He took the boy’s silence as submission.
“Now that we have that established.” He walked over to the blonde wizard and stood in front of him. “I am going to tell you how it is going to be.”
Draco waited in silence. He knew his moment of defiance was over. He was lucky to still be standing.
Although the lecture wasn’t quite over, yet.
“You will go home to your wife and you will perform your husbandly duties until the time at which an heir is produced.”
“Do you understand?” he continued.
“Yes, father,” Draco replied through gritted teeth.
“Good,” he said dismissively.
The defeated young man started toward the door.
“And, Draco,” Lucius added spitefully as the other wizard turned toward his father once more.
“Do try to be a man.”
