Chapter 8 Just Questions
Severus held Hermione close as he told her about Moaning Myrtle’s antics the night before in the teacher’s washroom. Her skin was so pale and soft against his dark black sheets. The curve of her hip was of endless fascination to Severus, and he traced his finger over it again and again as they lay in bed talking.
“So she decided to take the feather in order to force you to chose her or death?” Hermione asked with wide eyes. She was shocked to hear about the ghost’s behavior, but right now in Severus’ arms she felt like nothing could go wrong.
“That would appear to be the case. But how would she know that the feather was the most important part of the potion? How did she even know what we werrkinrking on?” Severus asked. Although his finger was still enthralled with Hermione’s hip, he moved to caress her shoulder.
“What year student was she when she died? She couldn’t have had knowledge of upper-level dark magic potions until late in her Hogwarts career. And even then she wouldn’t have been taught all of the intricacies of making such potions. I wouldn’t even know about them unless we were in this situation with Voldemort,” Hermione thought out loud.
A small shiver crawled down Severus’ spine. Even the Dark Lord’s name was enough to bring up unpleasant images of his past. Absently he rubbed the tattoo on the inside of his arm.
“Perhaps she has been studying such things since she died. But she wouldn’t have any real magic to use even if she did learn all of the elements of the potion. She’s a ghost after all. Now that I think about it, she said something about how it didn’t last. She seemed really upset and yelled that it didn’t last. I don’t understand what that means.”
“Well what were you doing at the time when she said it?” Hermione asked.
“She said that she would give me the feather if I would kiss her. Our lives were at stake you know,” Severus said to Hermione’s darkened eyes. “So I kissed her but as soon as our lips touched, I fell through her. She was no longer solid but a ghost again.”
“Is there a spell a ghost can cast to become solid again?”
“There are spells, buty ary are usually dark magic spells. And Myrtle would have needed the assistance of a very powerful wizard. I don’t think I could cast a spell that complex. But then my forte has always been potions.”
“We had probably better talk to the Headmaster. But maybe we should leave out what happened in the hour following that incident,” Hermione said with a gleam in her eyes.
“Well just how are we going to explain to him why we didn’t tell him immediately after it happened?” Severus playfully asked Hermione.
“I’ll leave you to do the explaining. I’m too exhausted to come up with anything,” Hermione responded dramatically as she sat up to look for her robes.
Severus made a grab for her, but Hermione was too quick for him, and she was out of the room before he could even get out of bed.
