Plans and Snarky Gits

My Mate
Chapter 8: Plans and Snarky Gits

Draco warded his rooms and cast a silencing spell with Narcissa
looking on in puzzlement. He drew the curtains closed and checked
his sitting room and bathroom before joining his mother at his desk.

“Draco, what are you doing? Is something wrong?”

Draco studied his mother, critically assessing her appearance.
Though she still looked young, the small lines at the corner of
her eyes and lips and the weariness reflected in her eyes made
her seem so much older. Her normally beautiful, shiny tresses were
dull and lifeless and there was a pallor to her skin that worried him.

“I’m getting you out of here mother.” Draco grasped her
small icy hands in his larger ones. “You can’t stay here, it’s too
dangerous for you.”

Narcissa reared back her green eyes growing wide and
just a little bit wild. “You know that I can’t leave Draco. Don’t even
talk about such things please.” Her voice cracked at the end and
she turned away.

“Mother!” Draco’s voice was sharp and commanding and
Narcissa’s eyes were involuntarily drawn to his. “I will not let you stay
here and die.”

“I’m not dying.”

“Yes, you are. Little by little you are dying. I have to
get you out.”

His mother leapt to her feet. “No, Draco. Whatever your plan is,
I won’t go through with it. Lucius will suspect you and I will not put
you in danger.” She turned to leave, but Draco grabbed her arm.

“Not if he thinks you are dead.”

Narcissa slowly turned to look at her son. “Dead?”

“Yes. You will be attacked and all that will be left is a
little of your blood, and your wedding ring. There will be an
anonymous note from one of father’s enemies and I will test
th
that I saw the whole thing happen. When you Disapparate, you
will be taken to Hogwarts where Lucius won’t be able to touch you.”

“My wedding ring won’t come off. Lucius enchanted it,
so nothing short of cutting off my finger will remove it from my body.”

Draco smiled evilly that reminded Narcissa so much of a
certain person. “It will after I remove the enchantment, a skill which
I now possess.”

For a moment, he thought he saw Narcissa’s eyes glow as a strange
expression crossed her face, but the next instant it was gone.
She stared unseeingly with glazed eyes and murmered.

“Hogwarts.”

Severus Snape caught her just as she was on her way
to a staff meeting. While he was never overly friendly, Ginny felt
that he had some sort of amicable feelings toward her. Sort of like
a smarmy uncle figure that always couched a compliment in an insult.
She usually enjoyed sparring with him, having long since lost her
fear of the snarky Potions master.

“If you don’t move a little faster, Miss Weasley, you
won’t be early to the meeting.”

“Ha, ha.” Ginny glared at her former professor.
“At least I’m not the one who always walks in late.” Her voice
was just as sarcastic as Snape’s.

“I am never late.” He huffed in irritation. “I always
arrive exactly on time.” Severus actually seemed a little offended.

“Ah, that’s right, I forgot you like to make an entrance.”
She said sweetly.

“You’re treading in dangerous waters Miss Weasley.”
Snape snarled. “I assure you, if you were still a student I’d have
taken twenty points.” Ginny started to grin but he continued.

“In fact…” Severus stroked his chin thoughtfully. “I just
may be able to find some little Gryffindor to dock twenty points.”

“Don’t you dare!”

“EgbEdelEdelstein could always use a few more points taken off.”

“Oh! You’ll frighten that poor boy even more than he already is!”

“He’s the Neville Longbottom of his class and he’s
already almost surpassed him in exploding cauldrons!”

“That’s because he’s so terrified of you that he can’t
think straight. And I know how many times because I have to
treat him when it happens!”

“Only when it happens on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays when you\'re in the Hospital Wing.”

“Yes, well, that’s when he has Potions, Professor.”

“I would think that your trouble-making Gryffindors
would have need of you everyday. Perhaps teaching Basic Magical
Medicine is taking up valuable time from their many injuries.”

Ginny huffed and looked away.

“Why Miss Weasley…” Oh no. It was his oily voice,
which could only mean evil things for her.

“Yes.” She said suspiciously.

“…A very important part of being a teacher is being an example
for our students, wouldn’t you agree?”

“Yes.” Ginny looked at him distrustingly and he
actually grinned, albeit evilly.

“I see. Then I suppose you can explain that bruise
on your neck.”

“Oh shit!” She’d completely forgot what with her visit
from Michelle.

“Ah, ah, language Miss Weasley. We’re an example
remember.” Snape could hardly contain his glee.

“Oh, piss off Professor.” Ginny grumbled as she
ducked into the staff room.

Ginny Weasley was being followed. She could feel it. There were
always eyes on her and she was never alone. At first, she hadn’t
thought much of it, but then it dawned on her. Sprout would walk
with her to her first class. McGonagall would accompany her to the
teachers lounge for a cup of tea on her break. Hooch would hang
around when she practiced Quidditch. Hagrid would find her on her
walks on the grounds.

This time it was Professor Flitwick. He wasn’t even
pretending to carry on a conversation; rather he trailed behind her
like a dog. Ginny stopped suddenly and whirled around.

“Can I help you with something Professor?”

“What? Oh no, my dear, I’m just off to class.”
He beamed jovially at the red head.

“I see.” Ginny nodded slowly. “That’s a little odd
considering you don’t have a class right now.”

The little man seemed to shrink and a nervous
expression crossed his face.

“I meant that I was on my way to…my classroom!”
He responded triumphantly, but Ginny just glared at him.

“I would like to know Professor, why all of the staff
feels the need to follow me everywhere. Did Dumbledore sic you
all on me? And why? Is there something going on that I should know about?”

“Uh…well…actually…um…that is to say…uh.” Flitwick stammered.

“Well, you can go tell the other professors that
unless they decide they can inform me as to the situation
which inspired all of this…then BACK OFF!” She screeched.

Flitwick lo lik like he was about to have a coronary
and Ginny stomped off, ducking into a closet just off of the trophy
room to wait until he passed by. When his footsteps died off, she
headed outside and off Hogwarts grounds and Disapparated.

Bradley must have been cooking because the apartment
smelled of Italian and garlic bread. She padded through the living
room and into the kitchen and leaned against the doorframe.
Bradley was cleaning the remains of his dinner, his back to her.

He was average height, with short brownish blonde hair
and blue eyes. There was nothing very exceptional about him which
was a nice change from the rollercoaster ride of life and death
experiences her life had been practically since she started Hogwarts.

Normality was nice. Bradley was nice. She could be happy with nice.

Brad turned around, smiling when he spotted her. “Gin! What a
surprise! I didn’t think you were coming until this weekend.” She
pushed off the wall and gave him a hug. Brad slipped his hand
down her back and lightly squeezed her bum.

“Ow!” He jerked away shaking his hand.

“What happened?”
“Static electricity I guess.” He said as he rubbed his hand.
“Sure stung though.”

“Hm.” Ginny mumbled absently. “I just had to get away for a while.
Everyone’s driving me nuts!”

“How’s your Basic Magical Medicine claurniurning out?”

Ginny grabbed a cookie from his jar (which just so happened
to be charmed to look like a Dragon head) and took a bite.

“Most of the children are fine, though there are a couple troublemakers
among them. I don’t have too much difficulty handling them thanks
to six brothers, but it’s a good thing we’re not doing much hands
on work yet.”

Bradley nodded. “That’s good then. I wouldn’t want you to get
too stressed, Gin.” He took the seat next to her and draped an
arm across her shoulders.

The two conversed for a while, his work at St. Mungo’s where he was
a Doctor in the Magical Mishaps Wing, the amount of Quidditch injuries
she’d already had to treat in the Hospital Wing, and her curriculum for
her Basic Magical Medicine class.

Bradley had begun massaging her neck and leaned over to kiss the
freckle that resided just above the left side of her lip. The next
instant he had been flung backwards over his chair, landing in a
heap after smacking into the bottom cupboards.

Ginny jumped up in shock as Bradley howled in pain, wiping
his lips frantically.

“What’s wrong, what happened?” She knelt beside him, but
he pushed her away.

“Get away, just get away Gin!” Brad writhed on the floor for
another minute or two moaning in pain, before calming down
enough to speak.

“It was burning my lips; they felt like they were on fire.”
He panted, his hands trembling as he continued to swipe
at his mouth. “At first it was a shock like my hand, but then
it just burned like crazy. Merlin!”

Ginny just sat on the floor staring at him. What in Merlin’s name
was going on? Then it snly nly occurred to her.

“That bastard! That conniving, evil, pompous, git!” Ginny swung
around and headed for the door.

“Gin, wait! Where are you going?” Bradley asked, still rubbing his lips.

She whirled to face him, her chocolate eyes darkened almost to
black with fury, her face red all the way out to the tips of her
ears and down her neck.

“I’m going to confront a rat.”

I know I said that there would be a fight in this one, but it just wasn’t going to happen. I promise it will be in the next one. I have Finals tomorrow morning and then I am completely done! Hopefully then I’ll have more time to work on this.

Thanks for all of your reviews! Any comments, questions, or input, just review or e-mail me! I’m aiming to get the first chapter up for “The Lion and the Veela” this week as well as the next couple chapters of “My Mate”.

Have a great week! =)
