Part 7

Hermione sat in the large chair becoming more worried as the minutes passed. Draco and Snape had goneo tho the bedroom arguing, Draco didn’t want to tell her who it was. She didn’t know why but if he was this worried about it she wasn’t sure she wanted to know. She was curious as to why Snape suddenly believed she had to be told though. She strained to hear the sounds coming from the other room. They were yelling but she couldn’t quite make out any words. After several more minutes the door opened and the two Slytherins entered the room.

Draco sat on the couch as far from Hermione as he could, not looking at her. She could see the scowl on his face, but it was directed at his Head of House this time. Snape had obviously won the argument. She wasn’t sure she was ready to hear this.

“Miss Granger, the Headmaster has a plan to draw out your attacker,” Snape began as he paced the room.

Hermione watched him stalk from one end of the room to the other before he spoke again. She was becoming increasingly concerned about the news, she wasn’t accustomed to seeing her potions professor show concern like this over anything. It obviously wasn’t someone he believed could be easily caught.

“Professor Dumbledore wants to send you and Draco into Hogsmeade to force his hand,” Snape finished still pacing the floor.

“Why Draco?” Hermione asked, “I mean why not send the person he’s after to town, I mean they would have no interest…”

“Draco being seen with you is more likely to compel this person to make a move than Mr. Potter,” Snape responded, watching her carefully. She was a smart girl and he hoped she would figure this out and not force either Draco or himself to actually say it.

“Draco would…the voice…,” Hermione paled, and began shaking.

Draco glanced over at her, she had made a lot of progress in the last week. She was talking and not jumping away from either of them anymore, and now he was watching all that advancement melt away and left the weakened Hermione he had found in the Forbidden forest. At this moment he hated not only his father but Professor Snape too. Telling her this now was cruel, they should have waited until she was stronger. He moved to the other end of the couch and reached a hand toward her.

Hermione jerked her hand away when she felt him touch her. His father had…this was probably all some great joke to him. Torture the poor Gryffindor by making her trust him after his father had raped her.

“Hermione,” Draco pulled his hand back.

“Stay afromfrom me,” she stood up and backed away from him. Her hair falling around her face. “I knew I shouldn’t have…That’s probably why you were out there, you met with him. You both have probably been having a great laugh at…”

“No,” Draco stood and started to go after her as she ran into the bedroom.

“Leave her,” Snape stopped younyounger wizard with a hand on his shoulder.

“I can’t. She thinks I… She needs to know that I would never…”

“She knows that,” Snape said quietly, “She’s…she needs time to think. She’s spent six years thinking the worst of you, in the last week she started to change that opinion just give her time to realize that you are not your father. Come back tomorrow.”

“I want to talk to her,” Draco said quietly.

“She won’t agree to see you now. Forcing yourself in there will only confirm in her mind that you are like him.”

“You’ll talk to her?”

“Yes.”

“Fine, I’ll come back tomorrow night,” Draco agreed and gave a last frown at the door before heading back to his own room.

Hermione sat on the bed her knees pulled to her chest, head down, and hair covering her face. She had stopped shaking, mostly, but she couldn’t stop crying. She had trusted, an, and he… well okay, not him his father. It didn’t matter though, he was like his father right? Dumbledore wanted him to tutor her, how could she possibly control her emotions around him. She didn’t even want to look at him anymore.

She knew she had recognized the voice that night. She hadn’t been able to place it but had known it was someone she had met before. Snape had been right, knowing hadn’t helped at all. It had made it worse, she had been able to pretend that it was over, the danger gone, when he hadn’t had a face. Now with a name and face she knew it wasn’t finished and it wasn’t going to be ever. Lucius Malfoy was powerful and smart. He wasn’t going to allow himself to be forced into a move he wasn’t ready for. If he had done this to her there was no doubt that Voldemort was behind it. She would never be safe, not until Harry…

Rolling over she buried her face in a pillow. Harry and Ron would try to go after him. Malfoy would kill them, they couldn’t fight him. Her mind went back to Dumbledore’s plan. Go into Hogsmeade with Draco, force Lucius into doing something. Part of her never wanted to see Draco again, another part of her knew that if she ever wanted to return to Gryffindor tower she would have to do what Dumbledore wanted or come up with a better plan. Then again, another part of her knew that Draco wasn’t his father, and had nothing in the last week, even this term, that should make her think he was a part his father’sn. Sn. Sighing she sat up and wiped at her eyes when she heard the knock on the door.

“Come in,” she said quietly.

“Miss Granger,” Snape said as he pushed open the door, “I think we need to talk.”

Draco paced the floor of his room, getting angrier with every step he took. His father had done this, had caused all of this and he was taking all the blame for it. She had no reason to believe he had been involved. Well, okay if he was being honest she did have five years of reasons to believe he would if not be responsible for an attack like that but at least revel in it. Dumbledore and Snape had both told him days ago that it would take time for Hermione to truly trust him and that finding out who her attacker was would probably set back any progress. He had believed they were wrong, he had proven in the last week that he wasn’t a Death Eater in training anymore.

He removed his robes and threw them on the bed as he passed it. He would see her tomorrow and try to explain. At least get her to see him again.

“Draco,” he jumped slightly at the familiar voice in the fireplace.

“Father.”

“Has there been any news?” Draco bit back an angry retort as he moved closer to the head floating in his fire.

“No sir. Well, Professor Dumbledore is considering reopening Hogsmeade weekends.”

“They were stopped?”

“Yes, we were told after the last one that they would be cancelled until further notice, but no one was told why. Now he says he may allow us another weekend sometime soon.”

“And Potter and his friends?”

“Nothing new, Granger is still gone. Potter and Weasley think someone did something to her.”

“Really?”

“Yes. I’m sorry father but I have a lot of homework to finish for tomorrow.”

“Fine, I’ll speak to you next week then. Maybe we’ll be able to meet during a Hogsmeade weekend.”

“Yes sir.” Draco said forcing back the sneer that threatened to appear at the thought of spending any time with the older Malfoy.

When his father’s face disappeared from the flames Draco slammed his fist into a wall. This kind of violence wasn’t something he was accustomed to hand shouted in pain. Normally his anger would have been worked out with a wand, but there was nothing to curse handy right now. Sort of made him wish for Potter or Weasley so he would have a target. His hand was bleeding around his knuckles and was swelling already, deciding he should head to the hospital wing before it got any worse he threw his robes back on and headed out.

“Mr. Malfoy was not involved in what his father did,” Snape said as soon as Hermione agreed to speak to him.

“Why should I believe that?” Hermione asked, not even fully aware that it was a teacher she was speaking to that way.

“Has he done anything to make you believe he would do something so cruel,” Snape asked, “Think about it carefully Miss Granger. You’ve known Mr. Malfoy for five years, the boy has been…cruel to you but other than name calling and reversible curses has he ever done anything to believe he would physically attack you?”

Hermione stared at her professor. Her mind was retracing all she knew of Draco, all the things he had done to them over the years. The most damaging thing he had done had been enlarging her teeth. It wasn’t serious not really, Madam Pomfrey had fixed in quickly. Evhosehose things had stopped this year though. He had stopped spending time with Crabbe and Goyle, and hadn’t so much as called her a mud-blood all term. He was still rude to them, but not cruel. He had also spent this past week trying to help her, to comfort her as best as he was capable of comforting anyone.

All of that didn’t change her fear though. Was there any guarantee he wasn’t like his father? Snape was a spy for Dumbledore, could they really be sure that Draco wasn’t a spy for Voldemort? She had never had any reason to not trust the Headmaster’s opinion and he said oy coy could be trusted. However, this wasn’t about what she knew anymore, this was about emotions. Right now every ounce her soul wanted everyone with the name Malfoy to suffer. It was unreasonable she knew that, but it didn’t matter.

“I know you’re right,” Hermione sighed, “It doesn’t change how I feel right now though. Can I have a few days to deal with this?”

“Unfortunately Mr. Malfoy is quite upset, he’ll want to see you tomorrow evening,” Snape responded, “This hasn’t been easy on him either.”

Hermione’s eyes widened in surprise and anger, “It hasn’t been easy for him? I was raped, his father raped me! I’m afraid to go back to my own bedroom. I can’t do first year spells. All because of his father and you tell me this wasn’t easy for him?”

Snape stood across the room from the now screaming Gryffindor. It was taking all the effort he had not to yell or deduct points for her speaking to him in such a way. He also knew that she hadn’t truly dealt with any of the events of that night yet. She hadn’t reached the anger part of dealing with it. That’s where she finally was and she needed to release the anger. It was better she do it now than when Draco was here tomorrow. So he stood quietly and let her yell.

“How the hell am I supposed to go on with my life, I can’t until someone catches him. I cago ogo out. I’m a target because I’m Harry’s friend. Wonderful, I’ll just sit in this damn school the rest of my life. How am I ever going to go anywhere without being afraid again?” She asked sitting back down on the bed and burying her face in her hands as she started crying again.

“Miss Granger, if you consider it, is it possible that Lucius has hurt both you and Draco more than you realize?” Snape asked before turning and walking out the door letting it slam behind him.

Hermione stormed over the trunk at the end of the bed and pulled out her night clothes and began changing quickly. Thinking about what Snape had just asked her. She thought back to the night they went into the pensieve. Draco had been shocked and upset by what he saw. He hadn’t known it was his father. He hadn’t even been able to look at her when they came out of it. She had heard him and Snape talking that night. She hadn’t understood what they were saying but he had been upset. Draco had lost a lot in the last year too. He had lost both of his parents, she hadn’t known that until this week. His mother had gone into hiding when Lucius Malfoy had been arrested. That’s when Draco had gone to work for the order.

Lucius Malfoy had taken a lot from her, but maybe Snape had been right and he had taken almost as much from his son too. His son no longer had either parent and everything he had believed had been torn apart in a matter of minutes too.
