Waking Up

It\'s been awhile and I\'m sorry. Please read and review...I live for reviews!!!

Albus watched the two sleeping figures. No matter what he said to Poppy he was very worried about the futures of the two people in front of him. Hermione was highly intelligent, as was Severus, but for all of her intelligence she let those she loved take all the credit for her own actions. She didn’t seem to have the confidence in her self to demand her due. That was something she would need if she was to survive this new development in lifelife.

He worried for Severus as well. Severus also didn’t seem to recognize his own self worth. He worried that Severus was in a state of depression. Albus had done everything he could for Severus, had tried to help the young man find the worth that was intricate in his life. The fact that he had risked life and limb to help the Order, to save people he had never met, proved to Albus that Severus was a good man. Albus knew that Severus was punishing himself. Contrition was a powerful thing and the need to fix past wrongs was what drove Severus.

Albus approached the hospital bed where two of the most brilliant minds ever to pass through Hogwarts lay, unawares. He reached out and placed a gentle hand on Severus’ shoulder. He knew that Severus preferred not to be touched, but Albus found this the best way to wake Severus, but not Hermione. Albus wanted to speak with Severus first; he needed Severus to have a firm grip on what was happening before he broke the news to Hermione.

He felt Severus jump under his hand, not anything overt, the potions master was a subtle man even in the worst of times. Albus could see his eyes flicker under the lids and then open. His entire body had stiffened under Albus’ hand but relaxed again when he saw that it was the Headmaster standing over him.

Severus felt a hand upon his shoulder and his body reacted immediately. He was in a position to fight within milliseconds but relaxed when he realized that it was the Headmasters hand on his shoulder. Severus blinked again and then looked at the figure lying in front of him. The woman had her back to him, her back pressed against his chest. He recognized the hair immediately as Miss Grangers. His arm was draped over her and he could feel her fingers intertwined with his own. He understood the need for silence and gave Albus a questioning look.

“There has been an accident, Severus. Do you remember harvesting the lilies with Miss Granger?” To this Severus nodded. “Do you remember what happened? We need any information you can give us. Your bodies were found, unconscious, by Draco Malfoy, along with the ruins of one tigress lily. That is all the information we have. What can you tell”

Severus closed his eyes for a moment, he had a stunning visual memory and could pick up details others would have forgotten just by replaying the memory over in his head. “Hermione and I were harvesting the lilies and a cut on my arm had begun to bleed. I swore because it was leaking through my shirt and Hermione looked up. When she looked up her spade slipped and sliced her h I w I went to her and took her hand to get a better look at the cut and our blood…it mingled and dripped on to one of the lilies. The last thing I remember is looking at her.”

“Severus, when did you start calling Hermione by her first name?”
“Never.” His reply came out sharp and he knew it. He was thankful to see the Headmaster did not flinch fromfrom the sharp tone. “I don’t know, Albus, I began speaking and it just seemed natural to call her Hermione, like calling her anything else would be to formal.” Albus rolled this reply around in his head, the potions master was formal almost to a fault. It had taken years for Severus to call Albus by his given name.
