Ch 7 Woman in chains

CH 7 WOMAN IN CHAINS

It all belongs to she who must not be named!

Big kisses at the bottom!

“Well I feel, deep in your heart there are wounds time can’t heal,
And I feel somebody, somewhere is trying to breathe,
Well you know what I mean,
It’s a world gone crazy,
Keeps woman in chains”

Woman in chains – Tears for fears

Hermione walked into the potions classroom at 7.55 the next morning. There was no sign of Snape, so she took a moment to look around the classroom. She sighed heavily, as she sat at her old desk and just for a moment she sat there with her eyes closed, and pretended that she was still a student, and that the only worries she had, were her O.W.L results, which were never much to worry about anyway. Then she came back to earth with a crash, memories of a different kind playing in her mind and she remembered why she was there and once again felt like the weight of the world was upon her

Snape watched her from the doorway to his office. He had hardly slept the night before, replaying the evening’s events over and over in his head. She had not surprised him with her well-versed threat; he had been ready for anything she could throw at him.
What surprised him was the way she had said it, resignedly, like she was expecting it to come to that, like things had gotten that bad for her. And then there was the fact that a part of him (My dark half) He thought, was expecting it himself and who had actually enjoyed the exchanges between them, even the threats. He decided that he wouldn’t rise to the bait any more, it would be safer for her that way.

She had sensed him come into the doorway and expected some sarcastic comment from him or maybe a sneaky hex while her back was turned, but he was just standing there and although she knew he was watching her, she just couldn’t figure out why. She thought she had made herself clear last night (Oh who are you kidding, you know you love it. Under all that rage you know that nobody can match you verbally or physically, like Snape) She shut the thoughts out of her head. She needed to be professional now, for the students’ sake if nothing else. Without looking around she said “Good morning Professor”

He wondered how long she had known he was there and was a little put out that one of his greatest skills, moving without being seen or heard, had just been destroyed “Miss Granger, prompt as ever, shall we begin?”

She turned around to face him “Yes, lets get to work”

And to his surprise, they did just that.

~*~*~

The first week was uneventful, unless you counted, three melted cauldrons from the first year Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff lesson and the fourth year Gryffindor/Slytherin class who ended up covered in boils after a botched revenge attempt. But aside from that things were quiet. She and Snape pretty much ignored each other, except when they were in classes and then they only spoke to each other with the bare minimum of words or if it was something to do with a student. At meal times they acted as if the other wasn’t there, and in the evenings, he went to his rooms and she went patrolling. The only thing she had noticed was how few Slytherin students there were left in school. She made a mental note to ask Dumbledore about it.

After the last class had left for the day on Friday, Severus went into his office to mark papers for a couple of hours before dinner and Hermione did an inventory of the storerooms as he seemed to be very low on basic ingredients considering it was the first week of term. As she walked into his office he looked up.

“Yes, Miss Granger?”

“Here is the list of ingredients you are running low on” She placed the sheet of paper on the desk and turned to leave

“Where do you think you are going?” He asked smoothly.

(Here we go again, the minute classes are finished) she thought “I am leaving professor. I thought that would have been perfectly obvious. Classes have finished for the week and although it may have escaped your attention, I do have an actual ‘job’ to do” She folded her arms and glared at him

“Miss Granger, I’m afraid you are not finished here, all these papers still need to be graded and as my ‘aide’ it is part of your job to do them”His eyes were sore and his brain was tired, and he thought to himself (Let her do them. She\'s clearly not doing anything else with her time here) He had not come across her or any of her team at all during his nightly patrols and had come to the assumption that they were not doing everything they could to protect the school.

She laughed out loud at the audacity of the man “Excuse me? You, Severus Snape can kiss my arse if you think that I am here for the soul purpose of being your slave, do you not think I have anything else to do while I’m here?”

He came around the desk and casually leant against it “Well I’m afraid that if you have, I have seen no evidence of it”

“I do not have to justify myself to you, you arrogant shit” She shouted at him

“In fact, if it were down to me, Severus, I would have nothing to do with you whatsoever, and I wouldn’t be here at all. Do you think I like this? Having to pretend to be something I’m not, people are dying out there every day, and I’m stuck in here, playing teacher with you”

Their eyes met, both sparking in anger, and she knew she’d struck a nerve. She’d just described him.

“Yes it must be ever so boring for someone like you” He drawled

“What the hell is that supposed to mean”? She said, defensively

“Well you and your friends were never happy unless you were in the thick of it, where the danger was, playing heroes, were you? You must have thought all your Christmases had come at once when you were recruited, now you can be heroes for hire, how exciting for you”

“You think we do this for fun? for glory?” She said incredulously

“Well Miss Granger, from what I have heard, you seem to have been having a lot of ‘fun’ with the disposal of the escaped Death eaters”

A mixed look of shock, anger and fear flashed through her eyes as she stalked across the room and slapped him hard, across the face “You know nothing about me, about the things I’ve seen and done, so don’t for a minute think that you are qualified to judge me, stay out of my way”

And with that she turned and stalked out of the office.

“That went well” Said Severus dryly, rubbing his cheek “I cannot wait to see which one of us survives the school year, and then there’s just Voldemort to deal with” He sighed “I think I would prefer to go ten rounds with Voldemort, if this is what she’s like after one week” and carried on marking.
