Chapter Seven
Sirius and Remus watched as Harry ranted to them. Both were casually sipping on their morning tea. Harry, on the other hand, was pacing back and forth as he was all but yelling and berating himself for being a first rate ass. Silently, both the men agreed with him, but neither of them said a word, feeling that it was best if they kept quiet until their advice was solicited.
“What’s worse is that Ron isn’t gay, Ginny isn’t a man, and I was stupid enough to think that if I had them as lovers my life would be perfect,” he exclaimed, looking to them for the first time since he started a half an hour before. “Well? Aren’t you going to say anything?”
The two wizards looked to each other. Remus asked, “You first or me?”
“You best go first,” Sirius murmured.
“Alright then,” he said, setting aside his tea. He stood up, went to Harry, and slapped his face hard enough to knock him to the ground.
“And to think I had him go first as I thought he would be more eloquent than I.” Sirius stood up and went over to help his godson to his feet.
“What were you thinking?” Remus demanded of Harry. “Somewhere in that head of yours I know that you knew that Ron wasn’t gay and that by even starting a relationship with him you would have hurt…”
“I know!”
“Then why?” Remus demanded. “Why didn’t you tell Ginny you were gay and break it off cleanly? Why pair up with Ron Weasley? There is an entire community of single gay wizards out there and you picked a straight wizard already in a relationship with the woman who is closer to being a blood relative than any you have alive.”
“Ginny thought we were a triad…”
“That was desperation speaking and you knew it,” Sirius told him.
Harry’s head dropped a bit as he muttered, “Don’t I deserve to be happy?”
Lifting his godson’s head by his chin Sirius said, “Yes, you do, Harry. We all deserve to be happy and healthy and in the arms of the people and family we love. But guess what? No one is guaranteed tomorrow never mind all of what you just grabbed from someone else’s life.”
“I nearly died!” Harry yelled.
“You expect us to believe that since you nearly died that you’re owed more?” Remus asked in disbelief. “There isn’t a reward system for who got hurt the most!”
“Even if there was, who awarded you someone else’s partner—a partner I might add that is as straight as they come?” Sirius asked casually. “Harry, I love you, but Merlin above I could kick your ass right now for hurting Hermione.” Sighing heavily he turned to his godson and said, “I never thought I would be able to say this to anyone, but grow up.”
Sitting down hard, Harry asked weakly, “How do I fix this? I don’t know where Hermione is and I can’t even find Snape now.”
“As much as it hurts, what I have to say may not be what you want to hear,” Sirius told him.
“What?” Harry asked. “Tell me.”
“Given everything that has happened, do you think your relationship with Hermione might be beyond repair?” Harry’s eyes went bigger as what Sirius told him hit home. “What possessed you to call her a prude? All you knew was what Ron told you and, Harry, you of all people know how that boy is. If Ronald Weasley ever told a story in an unbiased fashion, all of us have yet to hear him do it.”
“Ginny…”
“Miss Weasley is jealous of Hermione and her place in your life,” Remus said. “That is something you knew, but have ignored until now. Why? Because it allowed you to get what you thought you wanted without guilt—at least until you started to think with the head on your shoulders for a change.”
Sitting down hard, Harry began to absently weep for the one relationship that meant the most to him and yet he carelessly tossed away.

Draco looked in on Hermione and found her asleep in bed not only with Severus Snape, but with Rabastan as well. She was cocooned between the two men and looked to be sleeping far better now than she had before. It wasn’t until he was leaving did he notice that both the men were watching him to see what he would do next.
“Let me know when you need help,” Draco said to them.
Rabastan nodded and both allowed their eyes to close once again. He exited the room, closing the door quietly and went over to where his father and cousin were conversing. Lucius’s eyes shot up to Draco as he went over to the bar and poured himself a fire whiskey.
“You went through this cleansing Regulus told me of?”
Draco nodded. “That I did. It was horrible.” But then he took a sip of the liquor and added, “But if I had to do it all over again, I would.”
“That makes no sense!” Lucius snapped.
“Father, all I can tell you is what I know,” Draco said, walking over to him. “And what I know is that at this moment as I stand before you I feel…free.” He kneeled next to Lucius and set down the drink. Looking up at him, he pushed back his sleeve. “Look at my arm.”
The older Malfoy did so and was shocked to see the dark mark gone. “How?”
“The cleansing did it,” Regulus was the one that told him. “All of us that have gone through the cleansing and lived no longer have the dark mark.”
“Wait a second—you mean my son could have been killed doing this?” Lucius asked, sounding upset at the prospect. “What were you thinking to have allowed this to happen?”
“He would have had to go through it sooner or later, Malfoy. Better now than to try and runaway.” He made a hissing noise. “That would have been bad if he was found irredeemable.” Regulus swallowed back bile.
“And you would know this because…?” Lucius asked.
“Nott,” Black muttered.
“Theo?” Draco asked in shock.
“No, his father,” he answered. “The man died in pieces and not necessarily in the order you would think.” Regulus stood up. “Pardon me while I go to check on Rabastan.”
Draco looked to his father and found him looking far more fearful and pale than he had moments before. Silently he stood up and put a supporting hand on his shoulder.
“If we can get through this, we can get through anything, father,” he murmured.
“We?”
“Yes, we,” he answered. “We’re family and you’ll never go through this or anything else alone.”
It was with a weary sigh that Lucius covered his son’s hand and squeezed it lightly. Hope, it would seem even in small measures, was more than welcomed.
