Chapter six
Midnight came faster than Harry was expecting. Or perhaps it only seemed to come fast because he couldn't see the time and only knew it was midnight when Seamus woke him up. Harry had told Seamus as they walked back up to the tower that he would be leaving at midnight tonight, somewhere safe and no one was to know where he was going. Seamus had asked questions trying to figure out exactly where his friend would be going but Harry hadn't let anything slip, not even to Seamus who he told practically everything. "I'm sorry Sea…" Harry had said but the other boy just shrugged it off.
"If it means you staying alive, I don't mind not knowing. You just better come back in one peace." He had said. And now it was time to make it back down to the room of requirement. Harry got out of bed and felt his way around the room carefully to his new trunk. His old one had been left at privet drive, but Hedwig, being the smart bird that she was, had managed to get his map, cloak and wand. They were the only three things that Harry would ever want, or need.
"Are you ready to go little one?" The voice said from behind him.
"Salazar...?" Harry asked uncertain.
"Yes little one. Godric is with Draco at the moment. They are both waiting for us. So we must hurry or we shall miss our window for you two to escape." He said and took Harry's hand. "Is that all you wish to bring with you?" He asked when he noticed Harry carrying only three things. Harry nodded.
"…It's all I really own anymore." He said though he didn't sound too sad about it. He had grown up owning very little, and as long as he had his most treasured items he didn't mind losing everything else.
"Harry?" A very worried Seamus said.
"Your friend can not see me nor hear me little one." Salazar said.
"I have to go now Seamus." Harry said turning to face his friend. He felt strong arms wrap around him and smiled, he knew Seamus was worried that Harry probably looked as if he was talking to thin air, but that was one thing about Seamus, he was one of the one's that expected and excepted everything weird about Harry. The way he had put it was 'you don't survive the killing curse and remain a normal person.' Harry let go of Seamus and allowed himself to be led out of Gryffindor tower. The trip down to the room was a silent one as Harry was occupied with thinking about meeting his parents, and what it would be like. And he also wondered if he would be able to actually see them at some point.
Salazar glanced behind him at the boy he was leading. The poor boy had been through so much in his short life, but he never seemed to complain about the rotten hand that life had dealt him. Though the road would be a long one, things were going to start looking up for the boy. This first step was leading him and the young Malfoy boy down the road of greatness.
"Took you two long enough." Godric said once Salazar had turned the corner and saw the other two already waiting by a door. Godric must have already called that door up; Salazar shook his head at his comrade's impatience. But the sooner they got the boy's out of here, the better. If the boys were caught out of bed after hours there would be nothing that Salazar and Godric could do about it.
“I thought the little one could use a few more moments sleep. He is still healing after all.” Salazar said in defense then turned to look at Draco who didn’t look to happy about the fact that he hadn’t been able to comb his hair before being dragged up here.
"So how exactly do you plan on sending us back in time?" Draco asked giving the door a suspicious look.
"Ah. If we told you that little Malfoy, it would give away one of our greatest secrets." Godric said as he laughed a little. "Now then. Little one please step over here." He said addressing Harry. Salazar led Harry over to where Draco was standing.
"Now take his hand, and do not let go. Draco it will be up to you to guide the two of you where you belong." Godric explained. "He cannot see so it will be difficult for him and we do not want him pulling off and landing himself in the wrong time."
"But how will I know when the right time?"
"Believe me, you will know." Salazar said as he and Godric moved to the door and opened it. To Draco it looked like an ordinary room. Or at least it would be if the inside of it hadn't been pitch black. But considering it was the middle of the night that would be expected, if the room had no windows. Draco gave up questioning the room of requirements and the secrets it held. For it seemed that only the founders of Hogwarts knew all of the secrets, and why wouldn't they? They had been the one's to build the place.
"Let's go." Draco said to Harry and gently pulled his hand leading him along. Harry followed holding onto Draco's hand tightly. He hated not being able to see, and he hated it even more that he had to rely on Draco Malfoy to be his guide. However, as much as he disliked the boy, and he knew that Draco disliked him. The mutual hatred wasn't as strong as it had been back in first year. And Harry couldn't help but wonder what happened that was now changing the way the two boys felt about each other. Even with how nervous Harry felt right now at being led along by Draco Malfoy, there was no fear. And Draco, where he should have felt annoyed at being told by more than one person to help the currently blind boy, he only felt a growing urge to protect the small Harry Potter.
Both boys made their way slowly through the dark room, Draco making sure he never let go of Harry, not that Harry would have let him with the death grip he currently had on Draco’s arm that was sure to start cutting off circulation soon. But if Draco minded this, he didn’t say anything just led Harry along silently.
“…I don’t think there’s anything in here.” Harry said softly. It was as if the black room was waiting for that quiet sentence before the room shattered around them. Draco let out a started noise that sounded somewhere between a scream and yelp. And if Harry hadn’t been scared himself he probably would have laughed at how much Draco just sounded like a girl. As they started falling Draco wrapped his free arm around Harry holding him tightly as they spun through time. Draco was able to catch glimpses of Hogwarts different people walking the halls, sneaking out at night. Day turned to night, so fast that it was starting to make Draco sick so he once again closed his eyes and held onto Harry. Then without warning, they both stopped, Draco’s eyes snapped open and he spun around quickly landing painfully on his shoulder, but Harry was tucked safely against his chest letting out a small whimper when he felt the sudden stop.
“Harry?” Draco asked looking down at the boy still lying on top of him. “You can get off me now. We’re here.” Harry slowly lifted himself off Draco, but didn’t let go. Draco pulled his hand away so he could stand up and then heard Harry’s breath coming in quick gasps of air. Reaching down Draco took his hand again and helped him up. “Sorry.” Draco said when he realized that Harry must be feeling more disoriented then he felt.
“…Where are we?”
“You mean when are we?” Draco asked and Harry pinched him in the arm.
“No, because I know when we are. I mean where are we in the castle? And what time do you think it is?” Draco looked around.
“Well, it looks like we’re on the second floor. And considering how dark it is, I’m going to guess that it’s well past midnight, which means-“
“Which means you two have a lot of explaining to do.” A familiar voice said. Draco spun around quickly and stared up at McGonagall who looked ready to give out detention and take points away, but the words seemed to be frozen half way from her brain to her mouth, this moment of shocked silence didn’t last very long since the next thing McGonagall did was pull out her wand and aim it at the two boys. “I think the first thing you might explain is who exactly you are, and how you managed to make it passed the barriers of Hogwarts.”
“It is very simple to make it passed your so called defenses if you know where to look.” Draco said and Harry grabbed his arm before the blond really got them into trouble.
“Please professor, we will answer any questions you have for us. But we must speak with Professor Dumbledore.” Harry said. McGonagall looked sternly at the boys. “If you think the headmaster will be fooled by your poor attempt at impersonating two of our students-“
“We’re not impersonating anyone.” Draco interrupted her. “As my companion here said, we will answer any and all questions you have, once we see Dumbledore.” Draco said as politely as he could manage. Which was something that Harry never really heard from the blond boy before. At least not when he was being serious about it.
“Very well then. You won’t mind if I take your wands until then.” She kept her wand fixed on them holding out her free hand for theirs. Harry didn’t hesitate to take out his wand, handing it over handle first. Draco however grabbed his wrist stopping him, he glared at the other boy, not that Harry could see anything but the icy feeling was the same.
“Have you no pride as a wizard? You NEVER just hand your wand over to anyone.” Draco hissed.
“It’s not like she’s going to snap it.” Harry said. “Besides, seeing Dumbledore right now is more important, and we’re not going to get anywhere just standing here.” Harry pointed out pulling his wrist away and holding his wand out again. McGonagall took it from him. Draco still glaring also handed over his wand. Once she had them both she proceeded to lead them to Dumbledore’s office, Draco made it quite obvious that he was not happy with Harry. Every time Harry would try and stay close to the blond, Draco would purposely move away and make Harry stumble his way along. Harry however was used to things like this, not just doing things on his own, but the pure Malfoy attitude.
They reached Dumbledore’s office. Saying the password McGonagall made Harry and Draco get on the moving stairs first before following. The door was opened by Dumbledore who appeared to have already been awake. He looked at McGonagall and then his attention turned towards Harry and Draco for a moment. “Tonight seems to be a night for rule braking. Is there some late night party that I was not aware of or invited to?” Dumbledore asked, Draco narrowed his eyes when he saw that annoying twinkle in the younger yet still old Dumbledore.
“No headmaster I found these two intruders on the second floor.” McGonagall said as she guided Harry and Draco into the room. Harry by now had given up on trying to stay close to Draco, and was now listening to every movement in the room he could hear. He knew roughly where Draco was standing, and he could hear McGonagall and Dumbledore talking but there was someone else.
“...who else is in here?” Harry asked flushing at how small his voice sounded to his own ears. He reached up to remove the blindfold from his eyes again only to once again have someone stop him.
“Don’t, the bandage will fall off when your eyes have healed.” Draco said firmly holding Harry’s hand down to make sure that the boy didn’t try and take it off again just to be spiteful. Harry made a face but didn’t try and lift his hand again, he couldn’t figure out what was going on with Draco, one second he was acting like the boy Harry had known for the past few years, and then in the next moment he was acting as if he actually cared about what happened to Harry. It was getting really, REALLY confusing.
“Wow James, if I didn’t know you were an only child I’d have to accuse you of hiding your brother from me.” A voice that Harry knew all too well suddenly said, even though it was younger, and didn’t have the familiar rough edge to it from years spent in Azkaban, Harry still knew it.
“With you and your habits, if he was my brother do you think I'd ever admit to it?” James asked and Sirius laughed at him. It was at that time that Harry felt someone holding him as if he was about to fall down. When all things considered he probably was. Hearing Sirius was one thing, he actually knew the man, but hearing his father, so close and not being able to see him left Harry feeling light headed. Harry was guided over to a chair and made to sit down.
“It still baffles me how someone like you is supposed to...” Draco didn't finish his sentence, partly because he didn't need to, but also because it probably wasn't smart to be calling Harry the savior, boy wonder, boy who lived and any other names he could come up with. In this time Harry probably wasn't even thought of, and until he knew the whole situation here Draco didn't want to go and do, or say something stupid here.
“...you're yo-yo act is giving me whip lash Malfoy.” Harry's voice was harsher then Draco had ever really heard it. He actually sounded upset, Draco had heard Harry get mad countless times. But for as long as he could remember Harry had never acted too much on those feelings. And it got Draco to thinking, not for the first time, that there was a whole different Harry that no one knew about. 'I think I would like to get to know this other Harry.' Draco thought to himself with a small smile. 'But first...'
“What's a yo-yo?” Draco asked. Harry snorted then shook his head.
“Never mind.” He said but couldn’t keep from smiling. Draco narrowed his eyes more at Harry, he knew that a yo-yo must be something to do with muggles; therefore he couldn’t care less about what it was. But at the same time he didn’t really like Harry knowing something that he didn’t. Before Draco could say anything else however he noticed that the third boy that was with James and Sirius chose that moment to stop hiding behind his friends and come out to get a closer look at Harry and Draco.
“He really does look a lot like you James. And his friend, he looks like Malfoy.” The mousy looking boy said. Draco glanced at Harry feeling the other boy shift slightly, Harry's smile was gone and he was holding the arm of the chair tightly. Peter must have sensed danger because he ducked back behind Sirius and James. Before anything else could be said, or even happen Dumbledore spoke looking at the three troublemakers he had had in his office before Harry and Draco had shown up.
"Mr. Potter, Mr. Black, and Mr. Pettigrew. Fifty points will be taken from Gryffindor, and you will report to Professor McGonagall tomorrow after classes to discuss your detention." Dumbledore said but there was still a twinkle in his eye. "And I must urge you not to get caught out of bed after hours again." James would have smiled at Dumbledore if McGonagall wasn't in the room. The headmaster always had a way of wording things.
"We won't sir." James said.
"Then McGonagall, I will leave you with the task of escorting these young gentlemen back to their dormitories’." Dumbledore said motioning to the three misfits. She nodded glancing in the direction of Harry and Draco before leading her three students out the door, James and the other two following. James paused long enough to get another good look at Harry and Draco. Draco could just see the curiosity written all over James’s face, and did his best to ignore it. He was sure that James and the rest of the student body would find out about himself and Harry soon enough. Once the door had shut behind the four Draco turned his attention back to Dumbledore who was sitting behind his desk studying the two boys left before him. He didn't say anything, and Draco refused to be the first to break the silence.
"Professor Dumbledore sir...." Harry began and Draco could have rolled his eyes. Of course the blind half wit would be the first to speak.
"McGonagall tells me that you two were found in a corridor on the second floor." Dumbledore said. Harry nodded in the direction Dumbledore's voice came from.
"Yes sir." Harry was wishing he knew how much he should tell this Dumbledore, what would happen if he actually said he was from the future and the Hogwarts founders, two of them anyway, had sent him and Draco back here because, Harry assumed it was to hide from Voldamort. But how successful would that really be if they were now living in the time of Voldamort's first rise to power.
"She is concerned that you two are death eaters.” Dumbledore said and Harry didn't have to see to know that there was that annoying twinkle in the old man's eye.
“Would we prove that wrong if we were to show you that we in-fact do not have the dark marks?” Draco asked already rolling up the sleeve on his left arm. And just to make sure, he rolled up his right sleeve as well. Seeing no dark mark Dumbledore nodded then looked at Harry raising an eyebrow at him.
“Harry, roll up your sleeves too.” Draco said softly.
“Oh...sorry.” Harry said and quickly did as he was told. Draco frowned when he saw faint red marks on Harry's wrists, he knew they must have been there from when Draco had found him, but had his wrists been that bad that they were still marked? Deciding he would address this later he turned back to Dumbledore.
"Satisfied?" Draco asked as Harry rolled his sleeves back down.
"Yes, I suppose that will have to do for now. I don't know if it's been proven that polyjuice potion will actually hide that mark or not. But I suppose if you were under the cover of that potion it would have worn off by now.” Dumbledore sat back in his chair studying the two boys. “Well then, I think the next order of business would be introductions. You two seem to already know who I am, but I'm at a disadvantage here.” He smiled at Draco.
"I'm Harry Po-" Harry was cut off by Draco's hand covering his mouth. The blond boy glared at Harry though he could not see it. He looked back at Dumbledore. "I do not think it is wise for us to give out our names so freely as we are in hiding and we do not know what damage will be done if people know who we are." Draco explained.
"I see, But I would think it would be alright for myself to know your names, and then I will be the judge on whether or not it would be wise for others to know or not. I will not deny you a hiding place since Hogwarts is one of the safest places I know of. But it is the job of the Headmaster not to endanger the students." Draco narrowed his eyes at Dumbledore now working over what he had just said. He didn't like the idea of Dumbledore being in control of anything. Since that was one of the main reason's Harry had been sent back here, to get out from under Dumbledore. But he would have to be very careful about what information was given to the headmaster.
"My name is Draco, and he is Harry. Telling you our last names may cause damage that we do not wish to cause. As to why we are here, we were sent here by two very powerful wizards to help Harry here hide until he has had time to heal properly." Draco explained. At this Dumbledore stood up and moved around the desk coming to stand in front of the two boys. Harry could feel Dumbledore standing in front of them but even though he knew it was Dumbledore and the man would never hurt either of them he still felt himself shrinking away. He did not like the feeling of anyone standing over him.
"Whatever has happened to you my boy, has not been pleasant." Dumbledore stated before standing up strait again then looking at Draco. "I would still like to hear this whole story, it seems to me it would be a very interesting one. But I will respect your decision of not sharing your last names with me. These are dangerous times, and I don't think it would be right to not give you boys a safe place to say." Dumbledore said as he sat back down behind the desk. "Now the question remains where to put you. I suppose I could sort you two into houses." Dumbledore said looking up at the sorting hat. Draco looked up at it as well. "Or I could provide you two with privet quarters."
"I think sorting would be the best idea sir." Harry said before Draco could even think about what he was going to answer. He looked at Harry mostly in surprise. "If me and Draco are in hiding, we are still in school sir, and I think we would stand out to much if you gave us privet rooms. If you sorted us then we could blend in with the other students as much as possible." Harry said and Draco was surprised at this bit of logic coming from the raven haired boy.
"Yes, that would be a wise course of action."
"I don't think it would be smart." Draco said before anything was decided without his say in the matter. "I was given the task of protecting Harry, how can I do that if we are put into separate houses? If he's sorted into Gryffindor, and myself Slytherin, there is no way for me to protect him, and it wouldn't be smart either to have a snake living in the lion’s den, or vice versa." Draco pointed out and Dumbledore gave Draco a smile that seemed to let Draco know just how much information was given with that simple sentence. Draco could have smacked himself.
"How does this sound. You both try on the sorting hat here, and if it puts you in separate houses, then special quarters will be set up so that you may stay with your friend here." Dumbledore waved his wand and the hat flew off the shelf towards him. He caught it easily and looked at Draco.
"Fine." Draco moved forward taking the hat from Dumbledore and put it on his head.
"Ah another Malfoy, but you are not just any Malfoy are you? I see. You already know where you belong and I cannot argue with that. Slytherin is definitely the place for you, however, this is surprising. A Slytherin showing concern for someone other then themselves. You young Malfoy could change the way people thought of you Slytherin's. So I will keep you in the house of” "Slytherin" The hat said allowed. Draco took the hat off and stared at it, that was the first time the hat had ever really spoken to him. The first time it had hardly touched his head and he was sent right off to the house he belonged in. He sighed walking over to Harry.
"This is rather pointless don't you think Harry? We should just go with the privet rooms and deal with it that way." Draco said, but Harry reached up and took the hat from him and to his surprise Harry was smiling.
"I still have a lot of surprises. That even my friends don't know about" Harry said putting the hat on.
"Hahaha, you are right to say you have many surprises young Potter. A Gryffindor? Yes, you do poses those qualities. But don't you feel like an outcast in your own house? I am surprised that you have not gone to the headmaster yet. Though I don't suppose he would allow his golden boy to be resorted into the snakes. Though you are not as sneaky as the Slytherin's, you along with young Malfoy could have changed the whole outlook of the serpents. I look forward to your next sorting, it's rare that a student will put a fight about where I want to place them. But this time, let's see how well you will do in" "Slytherin." Harry took off the hat listening to the silence in the room and wished he could see the look on Malfoy's face right now. So he did his best to imagine it.
"Very well, Mr. Draco, it seems your fears of being separated from your charge were not necessary." But Dumbledore's words fell on deaf ears, Draco was standing there stunned staring at Harry who was still holding the hat. Finally realizing what he was doing he closed his mouth wondering when it had fallen open.
"You...."
"A snake in lions clothing?" Harry offered and Draco shook his head still in disbelief.
"Alright my boys. It is late, and would be rather rude to move you two into your new room now. For tonight you will stay in my guest chambers. And tomorrow at breakfast I will introduce you to the school. However, I think we should still address the problem of last names for you since you do not wish to use your real ones."
"I will discuss that with Harry tonight sir and we will discuss it in the morning if that is alright with you." Draco said and helped Harry stand up. Dumbledore nodded and stood up as well motioning for the boys to follow him. He led them out of the office and into the living area. There was a small sitting room with a love seat and a couple of sitting chairs, off to the right there was a single door which must lead to Dumbledore's bedroom. On the opposite side of the room, almost directly across from Dumbledore's bedroom was another room. Dumbledore waved his wand at the closed door before leading the boys over and opening it. It was a small guest room, with two beds, it was decorated with Slytherin colors. It was obviously a guest room spelled to adjust it's self to the guest's liking, no matter who the guest could be.
“You can stay here tonight, and tomorrow after breakfast I will have Slughorn, the head of Slytherin house, show you to your rooms.”
"Thank you sir. Before you leave however." Draco held out his hand. "May we have our wands back?" Dumbledore looked at him and smiled, pulling their wands out of his pocket where he'd put them after McGonagall had given them to him. Draco took his and handed the other one to Harry. Thanking the headmaster gain he waited for the old fool to leave before closing and spelling the door shut and then put up a few silencing charms around the entire room. Once that was done Draco kicked the door.
"....draco....?"
"What?!" Draco snapped at Harry turning around in time to see Harry shrink away from him and sighed. He still had no clue what had happened to Harry, though he was sure that not being able to see would make almost any Witch or Wizard skittish.
"I'm sorry Draco." Harry finally said. "I know you don't like Dumbledore..."
"You're right, I don't like him. He's a manipulative old fool and I hate the feeling that we're doing exactly as he wants. It would have been better if we had just taken our own rooms and be done with it."
"Will it really be that bad?" Harry asked. "Being in Slytherin dorm rooms I mean...?"
"No, it's not that bad but..." Draco paused and looked at Harry. "How did you get the sorting hat to put you in Slytherin?" Draco asked. Harry blushed and lowered his head.
"....our first year, the hat wanted to put me in Slytherin....so I figured since we're in the past if it wanted to put me in Slytherin this time I wouldn't argue with it. And if it didn't want to put me in Slytherin, I would just argue with it again." Harry said and Draco blinked.
"You...you argued with the hat about where you wanted to be? And you asked it to put you in Gryffindor?"
"Actually, I just said 'not Slytherin'." there was a long moment of silence again in which Harry started moving about looking for his bed.
"Why would you do that?" Draco went over to help Harry to his bed but Harry hit Draco's hand away and continued to find his way on his own.
"Simple, I had already met you at the time. And you reminded me of someone I didn't like."
"You asked not to be put into Slytherin because of one person?"
"No, not just that. Everyone I had met up until that point had nothing good to say about that house. Hagrid had told me that Voldamort had been in Slytherin, and had killed my parents. And then I was told that there wasn't a witch or wizard that didn't go bad that wasn't in Slytherin. So my mind was practically poisoned against that house before I even arrived at Hogwarts, and then I met you and that just did it for me, I didn't want to be in that house. And I was afraid that the hat would put me in there, and I think it would have if I hadn't kept telling it not to put me in Slytherin. I think it put me in Gryffindor to keep me from bolting from the school...." Harry finally found his bed and sat down on it.
"Why would you have..."
"Draco. Before my eleventh birthday I had never heard of Hogwarts, didn't know who Voldamort was. At that point, I didn't even know that magic was real." Harry explained to a very stunned looking Draco. How could the great Harry Potter not know about Voldamort? Every Draco had been raised on stories of the Boy Who Lived. How he had defeated the dark lord and freed everyone when he was only a year old, and then had just vanished. Though rumors had started that he had gone to live with wealthy muggle relatives and would one day return to the Wizarding world.
"How could you have not known?" Draco finally asked.
"How could I have? My....my relatives...." Harry trailed off at this sentence and seemed to go a shade or two paler then he had been before. And now he looked sick. Concerned Draco stood up, but hadn't even made it a step when Harry shook his head and continued. "They hated magic, hated everything to do with it. And I guess they thought they could....stomp it out of me." Harry had paused obviously choosing his words carefully. Draco narrowed his eyes at this.
"Stomp it out of you?" He asked still watching Harry carefully, the smaller boy was shaking and this was making Draco even more angry as his mind went back to that dream he had had, no, that memory. He hadn't wanted to believe it was truly Harry's memory. "You mean beat it out of you." Draco corrected. Harry hiccuped as he tried not to start crying. He had never told anyone. He had never even been confronted about it. And now that he was, how could he even deny it? He nodded. Something else seemed to come to Draco's mind and he felt sick thinking about how Harry had looked on the platform.
"Harry...." Harry seemed to know what Draco was going to ask and covered his ears and screamed. Draco was across to Harry's bed in an instant. Harry screamed again, and Draco wondered how long he had been holding these screams in. They were filled with years of pain and anger. Draco didn't know what to do, but following his instincts he wrapped his arms tightly around Harry sitting on the bed next to him and holding him close. As Harry clung to him and cried Draco swore that he would find those muggles and he would kill them in the worst way he could ever imagine. Waving his wand Draco merged the beds back together, scooting back so he was leaning against the head board and Harry was sitting resting on his chest as he cried. Draco felt stupid and clumsy with his comforting, but it seemed to work since within moments Harry had fallen asleep. And as Draco soon followed the last thought that drifted through his tired mind was that he was glad he had agreed to protect Harry, and swore that even after Harry got his site back, he would not leave the other boy's side. There was so much more about him that Draco had never known, or even cared to know.
"I will never betray you." Draco whispered to Harry as he fell asleep.

Okay, sorry about the long wait for the update! I had major writers block and so I sat down and forced myself to actually start writing again! ^-^ I probably won't get the next chapter up for a while because I want to go back and re-read everything I have so far so that I can stay on track with my own story. But I do have some good ideas in the works for this!
And now! If there is anything you, the readers, would like to see happen in this story, I think now is the time to start putting in suggestions!
