Mother Knows Best
An Heir

A few days later, April 9

Draco had explained all that he knew to his godfather. About Harry being the Patriarch, about how he was probably Harry’s mate, about why the necklace wouldn’t harm Narcissa . . .

Flashback:

“What do you MEAN I should just let him give it to her?” Snape roared, throwing yet another vase against the wall.

“Godfather, HARRY IS THE PATRIARCH! The necklace will not hurt mother because she is MY mother, and I am the Patriarch’s mate! Do you understand?” Draco had screamed back.

“It will kill her, you liar!”

End

It had been a difficult conversation.

Today, though, Draco had the day to himself to do whatever he wanted. And he wanted to visit his mommy.

He waited as the elevator rose slowly, climbing the floors until it reached his. He put his hand against his lower back and groaned with pain as he exited the elevator. He was glad it was only his back that was sore today, though, as lately his chest had been increasingly irritated and he couldn’t figure out why. More specifically, his nipples had been sore, and he was unable to tell if it had been Harry’s fault or if it was something else.

He walked past a nurse and then backtracked when he saw the restroom signs. He popped in to tinkle before making his way to his mother’s room.

“Little Nutbrown Hare, who was going to bed, held on to Big Nutbrown Hare’s very long ears. He wanted to be sure that Big Nutbrown Hare was listening,” Severus Snape read aloud to the blonde woman in the hospital bed. “‘Guess how much I love you,’ he said.”

Draco watched his mother’s reactions as Severus read Guess How Much I Love You to her. Her lucidity was fluttering on the edge of return but it couldn’t escape the void inside her.

He turned another page in his book and scanned the ‘Symptoms’ column, hoping he could find his mother’s condition in Magical Mental Maladies: How to Recognize and Cure Problems in the Wizarding Psyche.

“Let’s see,” he whispered to himself as he tuned out Severus’s voice. “Forgetfulness, slurring, no, none of those. She’s been lucid sporadically, has a childlike attitude most of the time, can come out of her trance-like state when someone around her that she loves is upset, how long has it been since the Platform? Um, ten months, about, I believe. Let’s see. . .”

He continued to scan through the book until he found something that seemed like it could be what Narcissa was suffering.

Pureblood Protection Spell

Symptoms: When confronted with a huge betrayal from someone very close to them, most purebloods have the ability to shut down their mental processes. The symptoms of this closing of synapses will be as follows:
1. An almost coma-like state of sleeping right after the betrayal and subsequent enactment of this spell, though this sleep pattern will change back to normal quickly.
2. The person has an understanding of what goes on around him/her and will remember everything should s/he ever be able to exit this trance.
3. Childlike eyes will watch the world, as this is when the spell is most often performed. The person’s eyes will reflect his/her age when the spell was cast.
4. Whenever someone loyal and fiercely loved by the pureblood is near the pureblood, s/he will be able to respond to the person, should the person in any way become upset or have a sudden fluctuation of emotions.

It is easiest to recognize this spell by the childlike actions of the person, such as collecting wrappers or a newfound love of stuffed animals.

Another factor to help recognize it is the hopelessness felt by those around the pureblood. The hopelessness will be caused by the moments the pureblood is completely lucid. The lengths between these moments will vary.

There are only two known cures for this spell and one is the Potion of Revealing Minds and subsequent instructions on its use. No book contains this potion any longer. The other cure is death.

Draco sighed deeply and wiped a tear from his eye. “There’s no hope,” he whispered to himself. He heard Severus falter in his reading and he winced inside.

He sank into his chair as he listened to Severus finish the story.

“I love you right up to the moon – and back!”

“Let me see that book, godson,” Severus said as he held out his hand for the mental maladies book.

“I’ll be back soon,” Draco breathed as he handed the book to his godfather.

“I’ll be right back, mum,” Draco said yet again as he hurried to the restroom. He relieved himself but this time, as he was returning to Narcissa’s room, he was stopped by the plump nurse stationed near the restrooms.

“Excuse me, sir?” she said politely. She set down the clipboard and file she had been handling and summoned him over with a finger.

Draco turned around and pointed at himself. When she nodded, he walked to the desk and asked, “Yes?”

“Are you feeling all right?” she asked. “You’ve been to the john just shy on ten times now, is all.”

“Oh,” Draco said with a faint blush. He’d already excused himself nine times?

“I just had a bit too much to drink this morning, I think,” he said with a shrug. “Maybe it’s an infection, too. My lower back has been hurting a bit.”

“You been gettin’ headaches lately? Or any changes in sleep patterns or bowel movements?”

“Well, I’ve been having a few problems with that last one,” he muttered with a blush. “It’s just not . . . moving. And I’ve had a few migranes the past few weeks, but nothing too bad.”

The nurse smiled and asked, “Are you sexually active?”

Draco’s cheeks flared bright red and he choked.

“Here,” she said as she handed him a small but thick booklet. “You’re visiting your mother, right?”

“Yes,” he said as he read the front of the booklet. SAFE SEX AND MALE PREGNANCIES

Oh, my.

“She’s doing a lot better,” the nurse said. “Her spontaneous moments when she is completely lucid and can speak and focus, they are very good signs. Make sure you tell her the news,” the nurse said with a wink as she took a phone call that had been waiting for her.

Draco walked off in a daze, skimming through headlines he never expected to read.

Detecting Male Pregnancies – Morning Sickness and Other Signs

Morning sickness occurs in 50 to 80 percent of new mothers-to-be. It's unfortunate that for many, the morning sickness will strike all through the day and not just in the morning. Most cases of morning sickness occur between the 4th and 6th week of pregnancy and last until the 14th to 16th week.

Every man is different where morning sickness is concerned. Some who do experience morning sickness will have bouts of nausea and vomiting, to varying degrees, usually occurring with in the first three months of pregnancy. The morning sickness is accompanied by other signs of pregnancy like backaches, constipation, darkening of the nipples, excessive salivation, exhaustion, food cravings, frequent urination, headaches, increased sense of smell, lower abdominal cramps, and/or tender or swollen breasts.

Another easy sign for male pregnancies is a sharp increase in the female hormones of the body. This increase will cause “girly” things, such as finding children exceptionally adorable, wanting to cook and clean for the father, crying over movies, eating a lot of chocolate, fussing over the state of one’s home. . .

Male Delivery

Male deliveries are not too different from their female counterpart.

The baby can be birthed from a channel that will appear usually 1-2 hours after the male has gone into labor. If there are complications with the development of the fetus, it is possible to have a C-section to remove the baby from the magically developed uterus.

Male labor lasts longer than female labor, on average. Where a woman could be in labor for ten hours, a male would be in labor for 28 hours. . .

Rare Male Pregnancies – Vampires as Either Parent

A vampire birth is likely to be less painful than even a standard female birth. However, the ‘mother’ will usually die during childbirth due to complications with the differences in blood types. . .

How To Tell If You’re Pregnant

There is a simple potion used to tell if a male is pregnant or not. It is not a common potion, male pregnancies being rare, but it is simple to create. Your local hospital may have a few samples of the potion on hand. . .

“Oh, my God,” Draco whispered to himself. He put his hand on his stomach and fought the urge to throw up. “I can’t. . . I can’t be. . .”

He pushed Narcissa’s door open, staring at some of the more vivid illustrations under the “delivery” headline, hoping beyond hope that he wasn’t carrying the unborn child of Harry James Potter, the Patriarch.

“Mum, you’ll never guess what happened!” Draco tried to laugh. “Some bird thought I was . . . thought I . . . ME! Hah!”

“What are you rambling on about, godson?” Snape asked.

“Sev!” Draco gasped. “I forgot you were here.”

Severus shrugged. “What bird thought what about you? That you were straight?”

Draco glared at his godfather and handed him the booklet. He watched as Severus fanned through some pages and read over the main points.

“Have you had any abdominal cramps?” the black haired man asked his blond godson.

“No, I . . .” Draco stuttered.

“Or any headaches? Backaches? Vomiting? Constipation? I seem to remember you complaining about feeling all backed up a few days ago,” Severus said with a sick grin.

“Did Potter knock you up, godson?”

“No!” Draco shouted as he backed into the wall. “No! I’d never . . . I’m a man! I can’t . . . I can’t get pregnant!”

Narcissa suddenly zoomed in on her son, noticing he was in distress. “Draco? Are you okay, son?”

With no warning, Draco broke into sobs, collapsing into a mess on the floor. “Mum, I might . . . I might have a . . . a baby inside me.”

“Love it,” she said softly. She smiled longingly at Severus before, what appeared to be against her will, her eyelids lowered and she blinked slowly. They came back up to reveal childish and unfocused eyes. She leaned against Snape’s shoulder and both men were lost in worlds of tears, each for completely different reasons than the other.

A few short hours later, Draco smoothed his robes and cleaned his face, erasing any marks of tears or fears, and approached the nurse who had handed him the pamphlet.

“Could I . . . do you have any recipes for a pregnancy potion?” he asked quietly, refusing to let his face blush.

She smiled softly. “We have some emergency vials, if you’d like to urinate in one of them now. And don’t forget, sir, witches and wizards all over the world would adopt your child if you’re not ready for him or her.”

“Just . . . just get me the test, please,” he said, his resolve starting to melt, cheeks pinking.

She disappeared into a room full of filing cabinets and shelves, bottles and jars, and returned with a plastic cup and lid, a package of powder inside.

“You just urinate into the container, and then sprinkle the powder over it. Let it sit for about three or four minutes, and if you are pregnant, the mixture will turn white. If not, it will turn black,” she explained. “Make sure to take the powder out before you urinate.”

“Yes, yes,” he said distractedly. He took the cup with a hasty thank you and almost ran into the restrooms, anxious to pee black for once in his life.

“How long has it been?” he whined.

“Oh, shush,” Severus snapped at his godson. “It’s been two minutes. She said three or four.”

They waited and the liquid began to darken.

Draco felt an enormous relief but also a deep loss when he saw the mixture turning a shade of gray.

“We still have 20 seconds to reach even the three minute mark,” Snape said quietly as he stared at the mixture. “Normally, I would expect some form of a release of energy, though I’ve never dealt with this specific . . .”

Just as he spoke, the container released a great flash of light, temporarily blinding both men. As their eyes recovered, both of them refocused on the small jar of opaque white fluid in the center of the table.

Draco collapsed into a chair and sighed deeply, his mother still ignorantly playing with her stuffed toys.

“I’m carrying the Patriarch’s heir . . .”

Draco returned again to the nurse and asked her for all the information she had on male pregnancies.

She handed him a bigger booklet that had information about the conception, the gestation, and the birth, including all the side effects and symptoms the male would go through.

“Do you have anything on . . . vampire . . . pregnancies?” he whispered.

“It depends,” she said slowly. “Which parent is the vampire?”

“The f-father?”

She handed him a business card with a name and “specializes in keeping cases low profile” embossed.

“Contact this man,” she said, obviously in confidence. Both of them knew vampires were a rare occurrence and not well dealt with in the public anymore. “He is trained to deal with situations like that, especially if the father doesn’t want the child.”

“I don’t know if he . . . if he will want us anymore . . .” Draco said sadly. He knew the Patriarch’s mate was very important, especially if the mate could birth an heir for the Patriarch, but Harry Potter?

Harry Potter was just out for the sex and certainly neither of them was ready for a child.

“The child will be immortal,” the nurse said softly. “He will age naturally until he passes his twenty-fifth birthday and then will stop aging.”

Draco nodded and stuffed all the leaflets into his pockets. “Thank you,” he said softly before fleeing.

Harry arrived at his vault with Griphook and nodded to the goblin, telling him he wouldn’t be more than a few minutes. Harry unlocked the door with his blood and was allowed in.

Immediately, the Patriarch’s long strides took him to the back of the vault, to the jewelry chests. He opened a few drawers until he found silver and black collars.

He had known they’d be there because the Patriarch’s mates frequently wanted to hide that they were vampires. He’d read about Maria A’jamais and her collection of collars in his father’s journals. He thought a collar would be a nice present to Draco, as a way of asking forgiveness for who he was.

He knew he would have a mate eventually, but until he found the mate, he wanted Draco by his side, obeying him. Being only his. He wanted to hold on to their time together, no matter how short it may last.

Some of the collars were velvet, some had onyx stones, some were all chains, and some were no more than a ribbon with a clasp on the back. He rifled through the necklaces, looking for the perfect collar for Draco.

He lifted a thick black velvet one but decided it was too broad. He didn’t want to hide too much of Draco’s neck.

He lifted a delicate black and silver chain one, but decided it would probably catch Draco’s hair and pull it, angering or at least hurting him.

He found another velvet one, more slender than the other and with an onyx stone in the middle, and lace around the borders. Too girly.

He lifted a few more collars before he found the perfect one.

It was a black ribbon. There were gentle perforations in a pattern along the ribbon, and from the center hung a large onyx stone cut into the shape of a heart. The ribbon twisted in the center, making a slender bridge from which the stone dropped, before getting wide again on either side of it. The necklace was charmed weightless for the wearer; otherwise, the stone would be too heavy to allow the ribbon to lie correctly on the neck. The holes in the ribbon would show some more of Draco’s skin and the sparkle of the black stone would enhance Draco’s mythril pools of eyes.

He slipped the collar into his pocket and opened a few of the other drawers, finding many pieces of beautiful jewelry, but nothing that captured his attention.

He opened the very last of the jewelry cabinets and was amazed to see a single piece of jewelry in there.

It was a large gold ring with a ruby, an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond embedded in the gold. There was a seven-pointed star on one side and on the side opposite it, a five pointed crown. There was a small piece of paper next to the ring and Harry lifted the paper first, wondering why this extravagant ring was by itself.

There was a list of the names of the owners, the last one being his father, James Potter A’jamais.

“This is the Patriarchal Ring, is it not?” Harry asked in awe. He lifted the ring and was impressed by the weight of the creation.

“I wonder . . .” he mumbled as he opened the drawer underneath the first one.

A single ring rest in this drawer, too. He scanned the paper quickly, picking up the name of the ring, L'anneau de Création, and the name of the latest owner: Lily Evans Créateur A’jamais.

The ring was gold, as well, looking almost the same as the Patriarch’s ring, except the engraved crown was replaced with an engraved infant.

He left the ring in the drawer, remembering to retrieve it when he finally found his mate, but slipped the Patriarch’s ring onto his own finger.

The ring surged with power and a book dropped in front of Harry’s feet.

Being the Patriarch.

He sighed and picked it up, wondering what he would learn from this well preserved leather bound journal.

[-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-]

“Sorry, Griphook,” Harry apologized as he exited the vault. “Got a bit distracted.”

The goblin looked up at him and shook his head, his eyes falling on Harry’s new ring. “Time does not pass out here when the Patriarch is inside the vault, my Lord.”

Harry’s eyes widened and he hooted, “Oh.”

The newest Patriarch clutched at the book that had appeared at his feet and wondered what being the Patriarch really meant.

A/N: Dreadfully sorry about how long it's been. I'd had some problems crop up with the pregnancy.

Let me know if anyone's still reading this! Did you like this chapter? Did you not? I know not too much really happens in it, but I promise, if you review, I'll upload the next chapter!

Here's a general poll for you all:
Should Narcissa recover and everyone gets married and has babies and a happy ending with that warm feeling inside?
OR
Should she remain the same, Snape kill himself, Draco die in childbirth, and all sorts of horrible things happen to the world of magic when Harry goes crazy?

Let me know what you think! (I may also choose neither and twist it horribly. . . what can that even mean?!)

Please review. *love*
