I do not own Harry Potter, the characters belong to JK Rowling and I get no money for writing this. It's just for fun.
Gone
When dinner arrived I went to the Great Hall as usual with Harry and Ron. I glanced at the Slytherin table on my way in. I just had to know if they had left yet. I couldn’t bear to look at the Professors' table. I would be in tears if his chair was vacant. It’s a good thing I didn’t look, the Slytherin table was empty. I imagine even the first years' parents would know what was coming and would make sure their kids were not here when their master charged the school.
I ate a few bites of something, but I couldn’t tell you what. I just wanted to run as fast as could away from here. I don’t know how I am going to make it through tomorrow. Making excuses that I have to go study I hurry away from the table.
As I exit the Hall blinded by the unshed tears I walk into someone.
“Excuse me. I’m so sorry,” I apologize without looking up until the person speaks.
“Mrs. Snape, where are you running off to in such a state?” Dumbledore asks quietly.
“Oh sir, I am sorry. It’s just I know he has left. We knew it was coming but I’m not ready. I’m not ready to lose him,” I am crying now, no longer able to hold back.
“Come with me. I don’t believe you want your friends to see you like this.” He calmly leads me into an empty classroom. “Now let’s have a talk.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Harry has filled you in on the proceedings I assume?”
“Yes.”
“So you know we are going to do everything in our power to not let anyone get harmed. That includes Severus.”
“Y-y-yes-s,” I barely manage to stutter.
“Please, understand he is doing what he feels he needs to do. He blames himself for what happened to Harry’s parents. This is the only way he believes he has a chance to earn forgiveness. Something that is really important to him for your sake.”
“I just need him. I know the truth. If that isn’t enough for Harry then I’m sorry. I just need him safe,” I cry.
“I know. I believe Harry will forgive him when he finds out that he has been working with us all these years. Besides, if Severus is what makes you happy that will be good enough for Harry,” Dumbledore explained wisely, “Now, how about you go up to see Madam Pomfrey. Tell her I sent you for a sleeping draught. I have been charged with keeping you safe. The first part of that would be to make sure you are well rested before the fight begins. With any luck the battle will not be a long one. Off you go.”
He leads me into the hall waiting to make sure I have started up the stairs before going into the Great Hall. I walk slowly to the Hospital Wing, where I dutifully take the potion. After which I head up to Gryffindor Tower. I rush through the Common Room not wanting to see anyone or be stopped. Thankfully I could feel the potion beginning to take effect. All I want to do is get to my bed.
“There you are. We were wondering where you disappeared to,” I heard Ron behind me.
“Sorry Ron, with everything going on tomorrow I need to get some rest. I went and spoke with Madam Pomfrey and she gave me something to help me sleep. So I’m going to go up to my room. I’ll see you both in the morning.”
“Oh good, we’ll see you then.”
“Goodnight.”
“Night.”
I crawl into bed hoping for a dreamless night. The nightmare reaches its peak soon enough, I don’t want it to follow me into my slumber.
