Chapter Seven

Hermione and Remus kept walking until she could no longer do so. She handed over the small tent to him and sat down before she fell down. Watching him pitch the tent, she also kept an eye out for any of the two legged predators that were coming after them. Who could those people have been, she asked herself. She hadn’t recognize any of them. During the time she had been training to be an unspeakable, she had thought she had met most of the working aurors in London. True, she didn’t work with all of them, but whom she didn’t know personally, she would have at least have met in the monthly meeting.

Whoever is doing all this, she reminded herself, had used doppelgangers in the past. Who is to say that they weren’t doing this again?

“Up with you,” he said quietly, pulling her to her feet. “You’re practically falling asleep.” He helped her into the tent and walked her straight over to the bed.

Lying down she whispered, “I think they’re doppelgangers. But what does that mean? Why would they do something like this?” She hummed as she let her eyes shut, but went on with, “They had a spy. That was a given. But who was it? And who is it that is pulling the strings on the puppets.” She looked over to him, blinking sleepily. “We have to go back to England.”

“But how to keep you safe?” he whispered, as he joined her on the cot. He spooned up next to her, his hand covering her belly. “You two are my only priority.”

“Hmm, just remember you cannot protect us if you’re dead,” she breathed. “Good night.”

It took well over three weeks to reach the coast of Canada. They ended up taking a freighter ship over to Spain and then made their way from that point to France and then into London via the Chunnel. All in all it was an exhausting voyage that took much longer thanks in part to Hermione’s pregnancy.

It was during the trip that Hermione worked on theories on just who was behind what was going on and why they would be doing it. What did the Ministry of Magic have to gain from the detention of werewolves? Or this hunt for that matter, asked herself. It doesn’t make any sense.

“Remus?” she whispered one time as he was getting to bed. “When was the last time anyone heard from Percy?”

He stopped pulling off his jacket and looked over to her. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, I haven’t heard anything from him in ages, I spoke to Molly and she tells me that he had nothing new to report. What if he just isn’t reporting in at all?”

He crawled into the cot with her, kissing her now very pregnant belly and murmured, “I don’t know, kitten. Try to sleep.”

Sighing heavily she did just that. But it hadn’t stopped going through her head that some how, some way, that Percy Weasley was involved. But how was he to gain if this was the truth? It wasn’t as if he were a high ranking member of the Ministry either. It didn’t make sense.

When they arrived in magical London, they decided it was for the best to keep under the disguise of a glamour. They ended up staying in a public house in Knockturn Alley. It was for the best, Hermione thought even as she killed every insect she had seen crawling its way over to her to divest her of her blood.

She stayed at the hotel room sterilizing it, as Remus went about finding their friends. What Remus found out sickened him. Sirius was back in Azkaban, having been labeled a traitor. Harry and Ginny had moved out of the country over to Italy along with most of the other Weasleys, no reason was given. Bill instead of going back over to Egypt or even the Shell House in France, stayed in London, but now he was working for the Ministry of Magic. This, he thought, he couldn't understand.

Remus rubbed her feet as he told her everything that he found out from his search for information. Hermione said nothing and in fact kept her eyes shut during the entire time that he spoke. When he was finished, looked over to him.

“I have a theory, but…” she sighed heavily. “I have no proof. Without that it means nothing.”

Remus nodded slowly. “Tell me anyway.”

“None of this makes sense,” she told him. “None of it. Its not logical.”

“Not by any stretch of the imagination,” he muttered.

“But then I started thinking, what if it isn’t supposed to be.” She shook her head. “That came out wrong. What I meant was what if we aren’t dealing with logic so much as emotion?”

He thought it over. “Emotions aren’t known for their logic.”

She smiled nodding. “No, they aren’t. And it wasn’t until that one thing came to my mind that what we knew started to fall into place for me. I don’t think its ever been about all werewolves, but one specific werewolf.”

“Me?” he asked quietly.

“No, luv,” she murmured, moving over to curl up next to him. “I think it was Bill.”

“Bill Weasley?” He said nothing for a time, rubbing the swell of her belly. “Why do you say that?”

“He wasn’t acting like himself in that cell I found you two in,” she told him. “What if…what if that was a doppelganger too? What if he’s been missing all this time, and we were just to preoccupied with the new law to know or think about it?”

“But who would want to get him and why is it that they are going after all of the werewolves now?”

“Let us not forget who is now the poster wolf,” she told him. “I have a theory about that as well.”

“Do tell,” he growled, nipping her earlobe gently.

“Hmm, what do you do when you hunt?” Hermione murmured. “You cut off all escape routes…” She kissed his mouth with slow deliberation. “…And you leave them no one to run to. You, my dear alpha, would have been the first person he would have gone to.” She brushed her nose against his, moving his hand to where the baby was pushing their foot out.

Smiling as he absently rubbed at the tiny foot stretching out his mate's belly. Looking into her eyes Remus said, “You’re right.”

Chuckling she nodded, knowing that she was. “But as I said without proof, it means nothing.”
