Chapter 7 The Order…
A couple of weeks after receiving Hermione’s letter and forgetting about it was once again brought to Sirius’s attention by his good friend and fellow marauder Remus Lupin.
Now Remus didn’t know about this letter when it came because he had been sent on a month long mission by Dumbledore, to try and reason with the werewolves of England that joining Voldemort was not in fact in their best interests, or that staying with him was really healthy for them. After all they had all received the curcius curse fom him multiple times, and while it didn’t hurt all that much because of their lycanthropy, it still degraded them to the level of dogs in the eyes of the Death Eaters.
Remus was able to convince a few packs of this fact but some rather liked the idea of killing for fun because that is what their wolf liked to do.
No, Remus happened to stumble across the innocent letter sitting innocently in the library, in the way back by the last remaining portrait in the whole house of the head of the house hold. Currently the picture, which was self updating, showed Sirius sulking in his frame because no one came to this part of the library and he couldn’t leave his frame to talk to anyone else.
Now the reason that Remus found the letter was because he was the only one who would go into the library to wander around and look at books, he also happened to be the only one who would go into the library period.
When Remus found and read the note he was confused on why it would be back here and why he wasn’t told of Hermione’s suspicions of Harry missing. Walking out of the library towards Sirius’s room, Remus read through the letter multiple times trying to find any hidden messages. In fact he was still reading it by the time that he reached Sirius’s door, opened it without knocking and sat on the only bed in the room.
“Padfoot.”
“Yah, Moony?” Sirius replied distractedly. He had been working on ways to sneak out of the house without anyone else from the Order following him or noticing.
“When did you get this letter?” Remus waved it in the air before Sirius before he continued in his search.
“A bit ago I think.” Sirius responded still distracted.
“Why was it in the library.”
“It wasn’t. It was on the kitchen table. Why what’s up?”
“Did anyone go check on Harry to see if he was at the Dursley’s?” Remus looked over at Sirius. “Sirius stop trying to escape this house! Harry’s might be missing!” Remus took Sirius’s notes away while raising his voice.
“Sheesh Moony. No one checked because we thought he was enjoying a vacation. Molly didn’t think anything was wrong, so it was dropped.”
“So Harry could have been taken from his protection with the Dursley’s and no one would have done anything? He is there for a reason! I’m going to Dumbledore about this.” Remus got up from the bed and headed toward the kitchen to where the fireplace is set up with Floo.
Kneeling on the kitchen tile Remus threw some powder in and called for Dumbledore.
“Remus my boy, how was the mission? Successful? What can I do for you?”
“Good day Proffesor.”
“Really Remus, you should know by now to call me by my first name.” Dumbledore interjected.
“Dumbledore, there needs to be an Order meeting. Something might have come up regaurding Harry.”
“Oh dear. I shall call one for tonight Remus. Good day.” Dumbledore ended the connection abruptly.
“Well now something will be done. Even if it is only double checking that he is with a friend.” Remus said turning to Sirius who was standing in the door way. “Have you wrote Hermione back yet about her letter?”
“I kind of forgot…” Sirius mumbled turning his head away. Remus huffed and walked towards the sitting room where he knew he could find paper to write a letter to Hermione letting her know that things are getting checked into.
(With Dumbledore)
“Shit. Shit. Shit. That boy is causing problems again! Didn’t his relatives teach him anything? He is ruining the plan! They can’t go and check on him…I know I’ll send Severus to check after the meeting. He’ll go with my plan of leaving Harry there.” Dumbledore mumbled to himself as he stalked back and forth in his office. Many of the headmasters of old looked down at him, some look disgusted, some sad, some neutral, and some were even nodding their heads in agreement.
“After all I’ve done for the boy! Making trouble at a time like this. I’ve always had to step in because he is always deviating from the plan! Damn it!” He moved back towards his desk, picked up a lemon drop and started sucking on the tart candy. “He will definitely have to go after the war if he survives.”
(Later that night at the Meeting)
“ I call the 19th meeting of the summer of the 5th year Order of the Pheonix meeting together. Tonights meeting was requested by Remus Lupin. Remus why have you called for this meeting?” Dumbledore started the meeting like he always does sitting at the head of the dinning room table that had been expanded to fit the members of the Order who could make it. He looked down the table to Remus over the top of his glasses like a patronizing parent to a kid who was wasting their time.
Remus stood up and announced his reason.
“It has come to my attention today that there is reason to believe that Harry Potter is missing. I have here a letter from his friend Hermione regarding this belief. Ms. Granger called earlier this summer to the Dursley household to request that Harry would be able to stay with her this summer. She was informed by the head of house, a Mister Vernon Dursley, that Harry would be gone all summer with a muggle friend of his.”
“Don’t waste our time with this dribble Lupin. Are you telling us that the reason we are all called here tonight is because perfect Potter is staying with muggle friends instead of Ms Granger?” Snape sneered from the dark corner he was sitting in. “I have better things to do than this.”
“Now now Severus, there must be a reason the Remus called us all together. Please continue Remus.”
“Thank you Dumbledore. As I was saying, not one of his friends or others that he talks to has ever heard him mentioning muggle friends from his neighborhood, in fact we have only heard bad things about his neighborhood and how they react to Harry. Ms. Granger and I believe that something has happened with Harry and I request that this be checked on.” By the end of his announcement members up and down the table were mumbling to the people next to them. Eventually the noise got so loud that Dumbledore had to quite them so that the “important” people could be heard, namely himself and Severus. After all Severus was going to help further his plans if he wanted to or not.
“That brat is probably just trying to gain attention for himself. We should ignore it. Probably not spoiled enough at home.” Snape grumbled to himself. He ignored the glares his comment created.
“Now Severus don’t be too hard on the boy.” Dumbledore turned to the rest of the room. “Who thinks that we should check on the boy?” A little of half raised their hands. “Very well. Severus you and Remus shall go check on him tomorrow.”
“Why me?” “I want to go!” Both were said at the same time and at the same volume. It took Dumbledore a moment to separate the two.
“Very well, Remus, Sirius, and Severus will go tomorrow.” Dumbledore stated ignoring Snape’s scandalized look.
“Snivillus shouldn’t come to check on my god-son! He hates him!” Sirius protested.
“Sirius stop this at once! You will all go together or no one will go! This meeting is declared finish. You may all leave now.” Dumbledore swept away leaving the two glaring at each other with Remus trying to break them up.
“We will meet at Potter’s House at EXACTLY 10:37 and 39.5 seconds. If you are not there on time I WILL leave and say that Potter was at home just fine after getting back from a trip, whether it is truth or not. Do NOT waste my time any longer.” Snape sneered before stalking from the room like an angry wild cat ready to attack if provoked. He was doing them a favor, after all, he could make them get up at 4:30 but he had a potion to create that would end at 10:37. Add in the 35 seconds to apparate from Hogwarts to Surrey, England and he was giving them some extra time. They should be happy.
(10:37am and 39.5 seconds)
Snape grumbled as Lupin and Black showed up on time and started walking up the drive way of #4 Privet Drive. Knocking on the door he glanced back at the other two to make sure they were dressed right. He was wearing black slacks, and a black button down long sleeved shirt. Lupin was wearing dark jeans and a white button down dress shirt, while Black was barely presentable in jeans and a polo shirt. Obviously Lupin dressed the mutt this morning.
The door opened to reveal Petunia Dursley’s smiling face. Her face didn’t stay smiling once she saw who was on her doorstep, but at this point she was smiling. In fact once she realized who was on her step she hastily tried to shoo them away, when that didn’t work she pulled them inside and shut the door.
“My goodness! Don’t you people know anything about the world! What ever could you possibly want with my family? I would like to out of my house as soon as possible. Oh, what would the neighbors thinks! And YOU! Severus, how dare you show yourself here! And you two are their friends.” Petunia ranted as she closed the door. Pointing first to Snape and then to Remus and Sirius. She managed to look down at them while checking the windows to make sure none of the neighbors were watching, before shutting the curtains quickly.
“We are here to check on Mister Potter your nephew. If you would kindly show us to where he is we will be gone.” Snape said trying not to glare at the muggleness of the house they were in. He sneered at the portraits lining the walls and mantel place above the fire. All of the pictures consisted of Petunia, a bulbous fat man, and a whale of a son, or only one of the three.
“He’s not here. Did that girl not tell you? He’s with a friend all summer and we won’t be seeing him.” Petunia once again checked the windows.
“Well then could you tell us how to contact them or where they went?” Remus stepped in before Snape could make a scathing comment.
“We don’t know.” Petunia tried to get them to leave at this point, even going so far as to open the door again.
“Are you an idiot woman? Who lets their nephew go with someone without getting contact information?” Snape got in before Remus or Sirius could say anything.
“It’s not our fault or our problem if something happens to him. After all you freaks are the ones that left the boy here. We don’t want him.”
“FREAKS! Now see here Petunia! Lily would have taken care of your son had the need come up!” Sirius yelled at her finally getting his say into the conversation.
“Yes, but that didn’t happen cause I didn’t get myself murdered now did I? And she probably disserved it and that freak husband of her too. Now out of my house! If the freak is gone we don’t care! Get out of my house before I call the police on you.”
Remus, being the only level headed one in the group, pulled the others out of the house.
“That went well.” He said trying to keep the others calm. Unfortunately that turned out to be the wrong thing to say. The two went off again, at each other and to the house that they were still in front of. Remus sighed and apparated back to Grimmauld. Sirius and Severus followed soon after still glaring at each other.
The poll is done now. And if no one’s guessed Dumbledore is evil and you shall see about Ron later.
Next Time: A bit more in France then on to Italy. And maybe another Order meeting.
Review please! I love them and they help my plot bunnies multiply.
