Chapter 7

His Best Mistake: Chapter 7

Hermione was humming happily, as she picked out her clothes for the day, choosing something light and airy to wear, for her shopping trip with Narcissa. Draco had been away for almost ten days, on a business trip with Lucius and tonight they were arriving home via Port Key from Northern France. Hermione was now just over six months pregnant and blooming more and more every day. Draco had taken to being a father to be with ease, and as much as Hermione hated it, she was coming to depend on him a lot.

In the last ten days, it felt like she had become even bigger than she was before he had left. Narcissa had even noticed how much she had bloomed. She was due to have her second to last appointment to check how the baby was growing in two weeks. She was very excited to learn the sex of their child. She had passed on knowing on her previous appointment as Draco had annoyed her so much she didn’t even want to know. She liked it much more when she could dangle the fact that it could be a girl over his head.

She knew Draco was looking forward to knowing what they were going to have, he had already had a small Slytherin uniform made for the newest Malfoy, which had reduced Hermione to tears as she hung up the little green robe set. She hated the fact that she was over emotional, and the slightest thing could make her cry. Even a comment made in the warmest way could cause her eyes to mist over with tears. She couldn’t control it, and every time she cried, Draco had took her into his arms and kissed her till she couldn’t remember what had set her off in the first place.

One thing she did know was that she had fallen for Draco, hook line and sinker. At every opportunity he got, he showered her in affection. He told her countless times, every day, how beautiful she was. It made Hermione smile when she thought of him, and she couldn’t wait until he was home. She and Narcissa had become quite close confidants in the past few months and she was grateful for the older woman’s advice when it came to children, although most people wouldn’t think it, Narcissa had actively taken part in Draco’s upbringing.

It was true what Lucius had told her about Draco’s emotions. She had noticed that around his parent’s he seemed to be more on guard, than he was with her. He also seemed to smile a lot more, and seemed relaxed in her presence. She noticed how he would always hold her hand, where ever they went, be it to dinner, or for a walk around Diagon Alley. He was very free giving with his affection and Hermione marvelled at the change in him, how could he have possibly been that, nasty, cruel little boy that taunted her in school?

She was pulled from her thoughts by a loud pop, and standing before her was Maggie, the Malfoy’s head elf.

“Mistress Cissy, is be asking if you is being ready, missy Hermione?” smiled the little elf.

“Yes, I won’t be long, Maggie.”

The tiny elf popped out of view, and Hermione slipped her white sundress over her head, and sighed as she looked at herself in the mirror. She had a neat bump and you couldn’t tell she was pregnant from the back. Her breasts had become huge in the last few weeks, and Draco had tended to lay his head upon them nicknaming them his ‘fleshy pillows’. She smoothed her hair down, using her wand and placed it in her tan coloured bag that she threw over her shoulder. She slipped on her sandals and smiled to her reflection before leaving her bedroom.

She could hear the booming bell of the front door as she walked down the stairs, and Narcissa joyous cries of “You’re early!”, coming from near the foyer. Her breath caught in her throat when she saw Draco, he held a bunch of white roses in one hand and a giant fluffy stuffed hippogriff in the other. He smiled at her and nodded to the stuffed toy, and gave her a sly wink. She laughed, and practically skipped down the stairs.

It all seemed to happen in slow motion, he watched as her foot slipped off the second to last step, her sandal flying off in another direction. The look of horror on her face, made Draco’s insides ache as she fell. She landed on the floor, on her side, her bump skimming the floor harshly. Everything was silent for a second before she let out a painful wail. He could hear his mothers tear filled gasps, as he dropped the flowers and hippogriff to the floor. He took her in his arms as she cried out in pain, clutching her stomach.

Without a second thought, he apparated them to St Mungos, as she cried out once more. He practically screamed for a healer as he carried her through the reception. Almost immediately she was taken away, in to a room to his left. Draco was made to wait outside, despite his incessant ranting. He barely noticed the arrival of his parents, or her friends until he felt a warm hand upon his shoulder. Pansy was looking at him, her own hands resting on her burgeoning stomach, she looked as if she was about to pop.

It stayed that way for almost an hour, before the Floo flamed once more, and out stepped a flustered Harry Potter. Draco had just been ushered into Hermione’s room, minutes before Harry arrived.

“What happened?” he asked Ron as he eyed Narcissa and Lucius warily.

“She fell.” replied Pansy, as Ron clutched her hand.

“What do you mean she fell?” he asked, his eyes once again drifting over to the elder Malfoy’s.

“She tripped on the last step, as she ran to greet Draco.” replied Pansy.

“I knew it! I knew Malfoy would end up hurting her!” said Harry as he scowled at Lucius Malfoy

“Its not his fault.” Lucius almost growled.

“Everything’s his fault.” snarled Harry, “What about the baby?”

“We don’t know anything, the healers are still with her.” said Pansy, as she stroked her stomach absentmindedly.

“And Malfoy?” asked Harry.

“In with her. You should have seen him mate, he hit the roof when they wouldn’t let him go in with her.” said Ron.

The door to Hermione’s room opened and Draco stepped out. He looked visibly upset, tear stains marred his face, and he seemed to be shaking slightly. Narcissa let out a choked sob and covered her mouth. Lucius placed his arms around his wife’s shoulders, and pulled her to him. He himself looked paler than usual.

“She’s fine.” breathed Draco as he sat down upon one of the plastic hospital chairs.

“What?” said Pansy thickly, as she wiped away her tears.

“Hermione and my daughter are fine.” he cried, his head dropping into his hands.

Lucius sighed with relief as she offered Narcissa a silk handkerchief from his pocket.

“Then why are you crying?” asked Harry.

“Why are you even here, Potter?” he asked.

“I’m Hermione’s next of kin, I was notified when they checked her in.” he said as he looked at Draco. He stood to his full height as Draco rose up out of his seat.

“I don’t want you here, Potter. You’ve done enough to upset her already with your stupid demands. How can you even show your face, when you asked her to choose between us!” he shouted.

“WHAT?” shrieked Pansy.

“Harry, you didn’t!” said Ron.

“I don’t want her to get hurt when you cast her aside, bored and ready to move on to your next whore, Malfoy. She’s worth ten of you and you know it!” he seethed.

“Listen, Potty, and listen good because I’m only going to say this one. I love her, and she and I are going to be together whether you like it or not. You could fucking jump off the nearest fucking cliff and I wouldn’t give a shit. But upset her and you upset me, got it?” he said as he squared up to the now Man Who Lived.

“Draco?” a soft voice called out, and he turned to see Hermione standing by the door, her white hospital gown like a tent upon her small frame.

“It’s ok luv, go back inside.” he said as he moved to steady her. She had suffered a large shock and she needed rest.

She looked at Harry, and then to Draco and nodded her head. She took Draco’s hand as he led her back into her room. Lucius stood up and Harry stiffened.

“I think you should leave.” he said as he eyed the boy who defeated the Dark Lord.

“Oh yeah? And who are you to tell me to leave, eh Malfoy?” said Harry as he stood toe to toe with Lucius.

“Harry, please. Leave it.” said Pansy as she pulled in his arm.

“It is obvious ‘Mione doesn’t want you here, Harry. Come on, you’ve seen she’s ok, lets go.” said Ron.

Lucius eyed Harry coldly as he was led away by Weasley and a waddling Pansy.

“A little girl Lucius.” breathed Narcissa.

“The first to be born in a long time, in our family.” he said.

“I knew he loved her.” she replied.

“I think, dear heart, he has for a long while.” he said helped his wife stand.

“I nearly lost her Draco. I nearly lost our little girl.” she sobbed as she curled up in his arms.

“She’s fine, luv, perfectly healthy.” he said as he rubbed her back.

“I was so stupid coming down the stairs like that.” she sniffed.

“You were eager to see me, if you think about it really, its my fault for being so damn irresistible.” he said, in an effort to make her smile.

“I’m so glad you’re here.” she said as she placed her head on his chest.

“I’m not leaving you alone again, I can’t. It feels weird to be away from you.” he said as his hand caressed her
bump.

“Did you mean it?” she asked.

“Mean what?”

“Mean it when you told Harry you loved me?”

Draco shifted, and coughed slightly.

“Yes, I did. I’ve been meaning to tell you for a while now. I love you, Hermione.”

“Oh Draco!” she said as she pulled him closer.

“Hermione?” he asked.

“Yes, Draco?” she said as she looked up at him.

“Marry me?” he asked.

She sucked her bottom lip into her mouth and bit on it nervously, and in that moment, flushed and teary eyed, Draco thought she had never looked more beautiful.

“Really?” she asked.

“Really.” he replied.

“Yes. Yes I will marry you Draco Malfoy!” she smiled.

He grinned and tilted her chin and kissed her softly.

“Oh and Draco?”

“Hmm?”

“I love you too.”
