Chapter 7

Blinding Discoveries

Harry woke up about 2 hours before it was time to go to breakfast and he had never felt more tired in his life. He walked back to the Gryffindor Tower under his cloak and got ready for the day. He was the first one day in the great hall and Ron was happy that he was there, but was a little confused when he saw the empty plate. “Why aren’t you eating Harry?” Harry rolled his eyes and smiled a little, “I…ate before you guys got here…I woke up earlier…than expected.” Harry said, hoping that he would fall for it, he wasn’t hungry…

Ron nodded and was immediately relieved of his worry. Soon the great hall was full and Hermione was giving Harry worried glances again. Harry didn’t notice however, he was too busy thinking about what Potions was going to be like. He didn’t notice when Hermione left earlier than everyone else, saying something about needed to speak with a teacher…

Harry walked into the classroom and sat down in his usual seat without looking up. He got out his book and parchment and was ready by the time Severus walked in.

Severus was still a little shocked, when Hermione Granger had shown up at his office 30 minutes before class he was more than a little annoyed, but when she expressed her concern for the boy who lived’ health he shook it off as foolish worrying, but now as he took his place in front of the classroom he noticed that Harry was extremely pale, visibly smaller, and looked exhausted, not to mention fairly depressed.

“Turn to page 498, read the chapter, and write a 24 inch essay on the potion. Potter, if I may see you in my office.” Harry’s head snapped up a little uneasily and Harry got up slowly from his chair and followed Severus into the little office that was just behind his desk. Severus closed the door and motioned for Harry to sit down, Harry did, not knowing how much longer his legs could hold him up.

“What is wrong Harry? Are you ill?” Harry was surprised by the concern in Severus’ voice. “I’m fine sir, just haven’t been sleeping well.” Severus growled and glared at Harry. “Listen here Potter, I will apologize for the harshness of my words the other day, but you knew when term began that we couldn’t be buddy buddy together in public. I would advise you not to forget the … relationship that we made together during the summer. I worry about…as much as I don’t like to admit, and I care for you, and something is obviously wrong with you, now you will tell me or I will give you detention every night for the rest of the year.”

Harry couldn’t help but feel extremely better with Severus’ rant, he had convinced himself that Severus had just built him up to knock him down, and he was very pleased to hear that he was over reacting. “I…haven’t been sleeping well Severus…I wasn’t lying.” Severus nodded, “I can tell that you are tired, but I also heard from Ms. Granger that you haven’t been eating properly.” Harry blushed and looked down.

“I…I haven’t felt very hungry lately sir.” Severus growled. “I don’t care if you are hungry or not Potter! Your body needs nutrition, it looks like you might’ve possibly lost 10 pounds…when was the last time you ate!?” Harry sighed, “It was only three days ago…I can’t loose 10 pounds in three days.” Severus rolled his eyes, “It looks like you have, you probably only lost around 3 or 4…but you were all ready relative small…so now you look….even smaller.” Harry smiled at him, “I’ll…eat today…even if I’m not hungry.” Severus nodded.

“I suggest that you go back out there and start writing your essay Potter…and please do remember to take care of yourself.” Harry smiled and before he could talk himself out of it he stood up and walked up to Severus giving him a small hug. Severus returned the hug and then pushed him away and sneered at him. Harry laughed and walked out of the room, immediately putting on a very pissed off face. The show had to go on didn’t it?

When lunch came around Harry made sure to eat double as much as he usually did, and Ron and Hermione looked like someone just lifted a stone house off of them. Harry rolled his eyes, knowing that they were all probably worried about him. He was feeling better than he had in ages, knowing that he hadn’t lost the one person that had been a father figure to him.

The day went by quickly for Harry and even though he was feeling better, he still wanted to go to the lake…he still wanted to talk to Draco. He grabbed his invisibility cloak and walked down to the lake, surprised to already see Draco sitting there.

“I was worried about you.” Draco said quietly and Harry looked at him with confusion. “When Snape called you in, I was worried that you were going to be more hurt, but whatever happened brought some part of you back to life. You actually ate today….and I think I may have saw you laugh a couple of times.”

Harry smiled and sat down next to him. “Yea…I got some things pointed out to me today, I…I still have things to work out, but…I think I may be ok.” Draco nodded, “That’s good.” They lapsed into their normal silence again and Draco thought of something personal to tell Harry, that might let Harry open up more to him.

“When I was 8 I walked in on my father casting Crucio on my mom. He told me later that the reason why he did it was because she had been cheating on him or something. I never understood why he would go as far as to cast an unforgivable on her….but it was the first time I realized there was no love in my parent’s relationship.”

The silence went on again, longer than Draco was comfortable with and just as he was about to speak Harry beat him to it. “The Dursley’s kept me locked in a cupboard that was under the stairs until I was 11.” Draco’s head snapped around to look at him in surprise. “What? A cupboard? But…but…I mean….” Harry nodded, “That’s why I am so damn short, being kept in something that little for so long must’ve stunted my growth.”

Draco didn’t know what to say, he knew that the older one had been drunk and shot Harry, but he was in a way hoping that he had been…on accident or something…but … if they had kept Harry in a cupboard…what else had they done to him! Hate flared in Draco and he wanted to go and hunt down the muggles that had all but stolen Harry’s childhood away. “The first real Christmas I had was at Hogwarts. It was also the first time I got real presents.” Draco was surprised that Harry had told him something else. But he could find nothing else as sad as that to tell Harry. Then something extremely horrible dawned on Draco.

“You’ve never spent Christmas away from Hogwarts have you?” He asked and Harry shook his head. “Nope….but it’s not too bad. I mean…it’s just….I dunno.” Harry shrugged and Draco had the urge to wrap his arms around Harry and protect him. “I…didn’t get the….broom I wanted for Christmas when I was 10.” Draco said meekly and Harry laughed softly.

The silence continued and Draco was in a way happy about it. He didn’t know what to think about Harry’s previous living conditions. He desperately wanted to write his father….and Draco decided that he was going to do exactly that. “I have to go back a little early Harry, but I will see you tomorrow right?” Draco asked and Harry nodded and then looked at Draco.

Harry was surprised to see that the moonlight was reflecting off of Draco perfectly. Making his face and hair have a light shine, making his eyes stand out beautifully, and before Harry could prevent it, he spoke his thoughts. “Your beautiful.” He blushed profusely when he realized he said it out loud and felt better when he saw the faint tinge of red on Draco’s cheeks. “Right then….I’ll….see you tomorrow.” Draco said and stood up, he walked a couple of feet away from Harry and then turned around. “You aren’t too bad yourself Potter.” He said and then walked away, physically making sure he didn’t run.

Harry sat there looking at the water smiling, maybe being friends with Draco wouldn’t be too bad after all.
