Chapter Five

Yay! EVIL COOKIES! That sounds scrumptious Kurai! As for everyone else, thanks for your continued coments, they're much appreciated. I especially want to thank Tina109 and momoko, thanks for letting me know I actually have dedicated readers. It's definately addictive, this writing thing. As for another update, I have most of the next chapter written, because it was going to be this chapter until I changed my mind halfway through because I realized I had to change the canon timeline a bit for something to work out later. So yes, I know Hagrid is waiting with ice cream, I have my copy of SS right next to me, but this is one of those tweeks I was talking about.

Chapter Five
July 31, 1991
Age 11

Harry sighed as Hagrid left him to be fitted for his robes. It had been more difficult than he had imagined to be “surprised” by Diagon Alley. He had been a bit fearful someone would recognize him as the boy who had been visiting for years, but he had been careful to act completely different and talk to no-one beside the twins and Bill on his previous visits. It seemed to have worked, no-one as of yet had associated him with that boy. He sure was glad Hagrid was leaving him alone for a bit though. Hagrid seemed to be a great guy, just a little too much in awe of Dumbledore. If he heard one more word of adulation of that man, he was going to scream.

Not really paying attention as Madam Malkin led him to the back to be fitted for his school robes, he was startled to see another boy with white blond hair and very pointed features. Annoyingly, he immediately started off in a whining tone complaining about any and everything. Harry was strongly reminded of his overindulged, lard of a cousin.

As soon as Madam Malkin declared him finished, he escaped the spoiled brat. Once outside, he noticed a rather nervous looking family. They were all dressed like muggles. The parents were distinguished looking, but utterly out of their element. The daughter looked to be about Harry’s age. She had brown, frizzy hair and a very studious air about her. At the moment, she was staring holes in a map; she seemed to be the type who didn’t like not knowing what she was doing. They were obviously muggles.

Harry, deciding Hagrid was probably going to be a while with his pint, went over to them to see if he could help.

“Hello, I’m Harry, are you going to Hogwarts?”

Desdemona Granger shared a look of relief whit her husband, Karl. They had both noticed their daughter getting more and more frantic as the morning wore on because she was lost. Maybe this polite boy could help.

“Hello young man, I’m Dr. Granger, and this is my husband Dr. Granger. And yes, our little Hermione has been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry,” she couldn’t quite contain her pride as she announced that, though she did repress the chuckle at the look of relief that crossed her daughters face when she didn’t use her nickname. She was very proud of her daughter; she had always known she was special. “Actually, we’re here to collect her school things. We seem to be a bit overwhelmed. Would you happen to know where one can get money that is accepted here? We tried using pounds, but were rudely laughed out.”

It was downright outrageous how they were treated. This school had sent detailed instructions on how to arrive at this place, and which stores sold which supplies, but nowhere in those pamphlets had it said anything about a different form of currency. How were they supposed to know?

Annoyed for the Grangers, Harry could understand where they where coming from. It was ridiculous how much the Wizarding community assumed you knew if you were new to the world. Especially considering the degree of secrecy they maintained. If he hadn’t had the twins and Bill to explain it all to him, he would have been completely overwhelmed and probably reckless to boot.

Harry looked at the girl, and immediately liked her. Maybe it was the look of righteous anger, or maybe it was the fact that she was the first person he met that was as new to this world as he was suppose to be. Deciding they were people he could trust, he began informing the Grangers about the Wizarding world.
