Chapter Seven
Draco was getting very tired of the cell he was being kept in. All he could do to escape it was to sleep, and he was also, strangely, getting tired of that. He had thought about his situation until he didn’t want to think about it anymore, he thought about Harry, he thought about his mother. Tonks had said she would try to get his mother in to visit him, but Draco hadn’t seen or heard from her yet.
He was supposed to have the paternity test later in the day. What would the Ministry decide when Draco’s children turned out to be fathered by Harry Potter? What could Harry say to explain away such a matter? Well, as Harry Potter, all he really had to do was deny it, and the Ministry would probably go along with it. The Ministry and the whole of the Wizarding world.
Draco sighed and rolled over on the cot to lie on his other side. He wasn’t sure of what the time was, but he hoped that someone would be in to get him soon. He wouldn’t even mind more questioning if it meant that he would be out of this room.
As if in answer to his prayers, footsteps sounded in the hallway and the door to Draco’s cell swung open. There stood Tonks, her hair fading from pink to blond, her face awash with frustration. Behind her, dressed in an upscale blue gown, stood Lady Malfoy, Draco’s mother.
“Really Nymphadora,” she was saying, “Pink is not a fitting color for a lady’s hair. Blond is preferable, but brown or black are acceptable as well. I do hope you will remember that. It’s no wonder you haven’t been courted as a young woman should. All the young men don’t know what to think of you with pink hair!”
Tonks rolled her eyes, though only Draco saw it. He smirked in response to Tonks’ look, then straightened up and attempted to look proper for his mother’s visit. He knew that his mother loved him, but he would never hear the end of how improper the cell was for a Malfoy, or how improper Draco himself looked. Though Draco had been the recipient of several cleaning spells, he had not yet been given a chance to shower, and so his hair was not up to the par his mother would be expecting. He knew that, but he could do nothing about it. At least his hair wasn’t still knotted and covered in blood and dirt.
Narcissa entered the cell, frowning at the clearly dirty floor, and the dusty walls. She had placed her hand on the doorframe, but now dusted her hands together with an expression of disgust evident. Just as Draco had thought.
“This cell is not proper for a Malfoy, let alone someone who is pregnant. Nymphadora, dear, why would you allow your family to be put in such a place?”
Tonks shrugged, looking slightly miserable, and Narcissa turned her attention back to her son. “Draco, I am glad to see you are alive and well. I trust you have been well looked after?”
“Actually mother, this place is tons more comfortable then the cell father kept me in. But I have yet to see anyone come by with food.”
“I’ll look into getting you some food, Draco.” Tonks said quickly, before Draco’s mother could launch into a tirade about how horrible the Ministry was treating her son. Narcissa gave Tonks a look of thanks mixed with frustration, knowing that her niece was interjecting to stop her from going on about the conditions of the place. She crossed the space between herself and her son, and sat herself on the cot beside the pregnant blond man.
“Draco, how are you? How are the babies? Have you heard from Harry lately?”
“I am well, mother, as are the babies. I have not heard from Harry since he found me with the rest of the Aurors, and I don’t expect to. He made it quite clear that he doesn’t consider himself the father of my children. I don’t understand why he said what he did, but I expect I’ll find out eventually from the papers.”
“Now Draco, you know Harry wouldn’t leave you on purpose. Surely something has happened to him, and an investigation should be started…”
“I am in no position to demand such a thing, mother, and you know it. I am still considered a death eater, and whether or not the children are Harry’s, I doubt the Ministry will care to release me.”
“Unfortunately, I do see your point, son.” Narcissa replied, touching her hand to Draco’s arm. “However, I still believe you should be fighting for your mate. Harry showed no signs of wanting to live without you before you helped him escape. I see no reason, short of someone else interfering, that Harry would do what you said he did.”
“But he did say it, mother.”
“Draco, we are Veela. Our mates cannot live without us forever. Doing so for even a short time is like torture for them. Quality of life changes. The way they see the world changes. Harry cannot continue on without you. He will be back.”
“For my sake, mother, I hope you are right. When it comes time for my children to be born, Harry must be there for me to survive the birth.”
“He will be there Draco. Do not fear.” Narcissa squeezed Draco’s hand for only a moment, before Tonks spoke, breaking the moment.
“It’s time for Draco’s paternity test, Aunt Narcissa. I need to take you out of here so that Draco can be brought to the testing room.”
“Go, mother. I will see you sometime soon, I hope.”
“Keep yourself well, my son.” She hugged him to her for a moment before she stood and swept out of the room, leaving Draco alone to wait for his escort to the testing room.
