Butterbeer and Crème Savors

Ron got up early and was in the common room by ten thirty Saturday morning. It was five after eleven by the time Hermione got there. The two of them left for Hogsmeade in silence. They visited the Shrieking Shack, Honeydukes, and the Quidditch shop before stopping for lunch at Rosemerta’s.

“So are you ready for the winter holidays?” Ron was nursing a butterbeer. “Mum can’t wait for us all to be home again.”

Hermione shrugged her shoulders. “I was actually thinking about staying at Hogwarts for the holidays.” She stared at her drink, stirring it.

“What?!” He choked on his butterbeer. “We always have Christmas at my house. Why don’t you want to come?”

“Well maybe Dumbledore can arrange for me to Floo to the burrow Christmas morning. I just want some time to myself over the holidays to think and be alone. I can’t get that at the burrow.”

“You’re alone most of the time as it is. I never see you. And Ginny says she hasn’t really seen you in a while. You don’t even hang out in the common room anymore.”

“I know. I’m sorry. But I still have classes to deal with and being Head Girl is stressful. I just want a nice break to sleep and relax. I’ll still visit for a few days, just not the whole break.”

“Well, have you told Mum yet?”

“No. I wanted to talk to Dumbledore first. I’ll send her a letter tomorrow if I can talk with Dumbledore when we get back. We probably should be getting back. I have a ton of homework this weekend.”

The temperature around the castle had dropped considerably. By the time they got to the castle gates it was snowing. Students had already set up forts and were throwing bewitched snowballs at each other. Ron joined Fred and Ginny in a snowball fight as Hermione made her way to Dumbledore’s office.

“Crème Savors.” Hermione chuckled at Dumbledore’s latest muggle candy infatuation; finally one she actually liked. She knocked on the door at the top of the spiral staircase.

Dumbledore flicked his wand at the door to open it. “Miss Granger. What can I do for you?” He nodded at a chair in front of his desk and watched her sit down. “Crème Savor?”

“Thank you, sir. Actually, I wanted to ask you for a favor.”

“That depends. What is it you want?”

“Well, I wanted to stay at the castle for the holidays but Ron and his family want me at the burrow. So I was wondering if it could be arranged for me to Floo to the burrow a day or so before Christmas and then come back a few days after. I know it’s not normally allowed. I just wanted to try to compromise before I told them wasn’t coming.”

“I actually think it’s a good idea for you to stay here. For one, I want you to continue to talk with Professor Snape and I doubt he would enjoy seeing anyone from the Weasley family on his holiday. But I also believe that the Weasley family, or at least certain members of the family, are adding to your stress. Have you been talking with Professor Snape by the way?”

“Well, not since the other day. We decided to meet after potions each week. That’s okay isn’t it?”

“Yes. Whatever works for the two of you. I just want to know that you are okay. How has your week been?”

“Oh I’m fine; a lot better since I talked with the Professor actually. I’ll be okay; you shouldn’t worry too much about me.”

“Well I do believe that Molly will have my head if I told you I couldn’t set this up. And I can trust you; you wouldn’t be Head Girl otherwise. So have you spoken with Molly yet?”

“No sir. I was going to send an owl after I spoke with you. I was afraid she’d get upset.”

“She might. But I’m on your side with this one. I’ll speak with her about it.” Hermione started to interrupt but Dumbledore silenced her. “I won’t say too much. Just that a break would do you some good. Now, go send that owl and I’ll deal with Molly if the time comes.”

Hermione left for the owlery contemplating what to write to Mrs. Weasley and not offend her. She did love them all. But she needed some time alone to work things out.
