The Phantom Musician

Author's Notes: This chapter features Hunter's remake of Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Also included in this chapter is Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven.

Hunter feels their eyes on him but show no outward signs of having noticed them. With his eyes closed he begins playing another of his songs.

I walk a lonely road. The only one that I have ever known. Don't know where it goes but it's home to me and I walk alone. I walk this empty street on the boulevard of broken dreams. Where the city sleeps and I'm the only one and I walk alone. I walk alone, I walk alone, I walk alone, I walk a...

The words he sings hit Katie like a punch in the stomach. She wished more then anything, and not for the first time, that he would allow her in and see that someone did care about him.

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me. My shattered heart is no longer even beating. Sometimes I wish someone up there would stop me. Till then I walk alone.

The other Quidditch players stand there stunned as they listen to Hunter's singing. None of them had any idea how talented or how lonely the young man was. Not even Ron and Harry had ever heard Hunter play before. The pain his music conveyed left them all standing there in awe.

I'm walking down the line, that divides me somewhere in my mind. On the borderline of the edge and where I walk alone. Read between the lines it's fucked up and nothing is alright.
Check my vital signs to know some how I am still alive. And I walk alone. I walk alone, I walk alone. I walk alone, I walk a...

Katie slowly walks over towards him, her vision slightly blurry from the unshed tears in her eyes. Her emotions are a confused jumble of relief that he's all right and sorrow for the pain he's had to endure all by himself.

Hunter can feel her presence drawing closer to him but he refuses to open his eyes and look at her. In the week since his disappearance he still hasn't fully recovered from this latest round of heartache and loss. Not trusting himself he continues to play with his eyes closed.

After finishing his song he slowly set his guitar down and lowered his head without even opening his eyes to look at them. "Thought i made it clear I wanted to be left alone."

The dam of pent up emotions inside Katie finally burst as she closed the gap between them and threw her arms around him. Her tears began to flow freely as she buried her face into his chest. "We've been so worried about you."

Grasping her shoulders, Hunter allowed her to cry as he looked over her shoulder at the others. "You have," he began. "But they haven't." His voice was calm and even, but they could all hear the strain of restraint behind it.

Katie pulls back and looked up at his face and into his eyes. She could see the pain and rage where still dangerously close to the surface even though he had begun to control it. "Yes, they have," she said. "They've been helping me look for you."

Hunter's gaze holds hers as he speaks gently to her. "They've been helping you because the care about you, not me." There is no malice in his voice; to him it is just nothing more then a simple fact of life.

"We care too.” Harry said defensively. Yet, as soon as the worlds passed his lips he lost the confidence that had inspired them.

Hunter looked from Katie to Harry and noted how the other boy stiffened for a brief moment. "Tell me Harry, did you consult Dobby? Did you search the Room of Requirements?" Why he had continued to allow Katie to hold him he didn't know but for the time he had other matters on his mind.

Harry looked down at the floor unable to meet the looks the others were giving him.” Well, ah... no." Harry finally admitted.

Hunter nods as he hears the truth from his roommate before he looks at Fred and George. "Did either of you check the secret passages or think of asking the house elves if they had seen me?"

Not even the twins could meet his eyes gaze as they fidget. They feel as if Mrs. Weasley is scolding them even though Hunter has said nothing else since he asked the questions. "No." They answer at the same time.

Katie glares at the three of them and they shrink under her disapproving gave. Hunter's voice spares them further shame.

"I told you once before Katie," he began. "Just because I want to be left alone, doesn’t mean I don't know what's happening around me." He reminded her as she look up at him again. "I told the elves that if anyone came looking for me to tell them they had seen me, if not then there was no need to bring it up."

Hunter gently eases her away from him as he hops off the desk. "They did look for me because they're your friends and they care about you,” he said. "They didn't use all of their resources because they didn't really care to if they found me or not." Again he's just relaying a simple fact and doesn't blame the three boys for being themselves.

With nothing further to say Hunter picks up his guitar and begins walking out of the room. Before he can open the door however Katie grabs his right arm causing him to stop in his tracks. "Please Hunter don't leave..." She was once again on the verge of tears as she pleaded for him to stay. "Talk to me, let me help you."

Hunter stuns them all as he turns around and gives her a faint smile. "I appreciate your concern Katie," he says bringing his right hand to touch her cheek. "But I'm through talking for tonight."

He gently kisses the top of her forehead before turning around again to leave. "I'll be around,” he says as he walks out the door.

The Gryffindor Quidditch team only knew Hunter’s latest disappearance since no one else was in the room that night. However the following night some first year Hufflepuff had gotten lost and heard music down the hall. But by the time she got to where it was coming from it had stopped.

Hers wasn't the only encounter, in fact several other students from all four houses had reported hearing what they could only describe as 'Muggle Music' being played through out the castle. At first everyone thought it was either Peeve or the Weasley twins playing a prank until there was a report of the music being hear near Ravenclaw tower at the same time all three suspects where in the great hall with a few hundred witnesses.

As the rumors of the 'Phantom Musician' began to spread Katie couldn’t help but find her own spirits begin to lift. He's all right and still at school. He's coping with things in his own way. When he's ready things can start getting back to normal.

The days leading up to the each Hogsmeade weekend found the Phantom Musician being heard performing more frequently around the castle. While he continued to roam the halls the majority of the reported encounters had him frequenting Gryffindor Tower rather heavily.

With the exception of rumored encounters and speculation as to the Phantom's identity, life had continued as normal around the castle. Gryffindor was gaining on Slytherin in the race for the House Cup and was currently leading the competition for The Quidditch Cup. Their next scheduled match was against Ravenclaw tomorrow morning. This would be the final game before Christmas Break. Needless to say everyone was excited, almost everyone.

Katie was sitting in a chair by the fireplace staring into the flames. If Gryffindor won with a large enough lead then they could squeeze by Slytherin and take the lead for the House Cup. We only need to win by more then 200 points. It's not that hard to do.

Leaning back in her seat she continues watching the red and orange flames dance in the fireplace in front of her. She closes her eyes and listens to the sounds of the empty common room and the crackling fire. Somewhere off in the distance, just beyond the portal seperating the Gryffindor Common Room from the rest of the castle, she heard the faint strumming of a guitar and whisper of a singing voice.

Would you know my name, if I saw you in heaven? Would it be the same, if I saw you in heaven? I must be strong and carry on, 'cause I know I don't belong. Here in heaven.

Listening to the distant music, Katie closes her eyes and allows herself to get lost in its gentle melody as sleep finally claims her. With in mere moments Katie smiles to herself at the dream his music has provided her.

Would you hold my hand, if I saw you in heaven? Would you help me stand, if I saw you in heaven? I'll find my way, through night and day, 'cause I know I just can't stay. Here in heaven.

The 'Phantom Musician' stands outside the portrait of the Fat Lady as he plays his guitar and serenades the sleeping portraits. He leans against the wall beside the Fat Lady, placing a foot on the wall behind him to keep from sliding down the wall.

Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees. Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please. Beyond the door, there's peace I'm sure, and I know there'll be no more. Tears in heaven.

As Katie dreams she finds herself in the Great Hall during the Yule Ball dancing around the room in elegant ball gown as a young man walks towards her. He is dressed in muggle clothing but instead of jeans and a shirt his choice of attire is more suitable to the occasion. The Tuxedo he wears is black silk with matching slacks bowtie cover bun and shoes. They dance the rest of the night away as a gentle melody plays in the background.

Would you know my name, if I saw you in heaven? Would it be the same, if I saw you in heaven I must be strong, and carry on, 'cause I know I don't belong. Here in heaven.
