From Chapter 6: The Curiosity of the Cat
“We goblins know quite a lot, young man. I’m afraid that we cannot tell you our secrets, but trust us. Your identity is quite safe with us. Now, I believe that you have a key with you? Good. Let’s go to your vault.”

Chapter 7: The Blood of the Old Man

Shopping finished, the two men decided to eat at the Leaky Cauldron before returning to the school. An easy silence filled the air as they waited on their selections to arrive. Tom waited on them personally, setting their plates down with a practiced hand. “Anything else, boys?”

“No, sir,” Harry answered. “This is quite acceptable,” offered Severus.

As they tucked in, Severus caught himself looking at his companion. For some reason, it seemed that his very blood was singing when he was around the newcomer. He had never had this reaction to anyone before. He wanted to share everything with Alexander, to have Alexander share everything with him. Something about his looks didn’t quite fit, but he could not put a finger on it. Looks, he knew, was not important. Nonetheless, he definitely wanted to put a finger, and a whole lot more, on the man across from him.

Severus cleared his throat, “Alexander, since we are going to be sharing quarters, could you tell me a little about yourself?”

Harry nodded awkwardly, “Um, sure, Severus. There’s just one problem. I don’t remember much of anything. I….was in an accident, and magic is the only thing I can remember.”

Severus peered suspiciously at Harry. It was not known to many, but he was already well-practiced in the arts of Occlumency and Legilimency, both of which he could perform wordlessly and wandlessly. He silently nudged the other man’s mind, seeking only to find out if this was true. The young professor was surprised to find the boy’s mind mostly clear. There were the memories of spells, Hogwarts, and other magical knowledge floating around the space, which resembled a large stone room, but there were no personal memories. Curiously, there was what looked to be a large chest, bound and locked, and with a bright red glow in the center of the room. Ah, but wait, suddenly, the dark man found himself in a bedroom, much like one of the dorms at school. There were two people..men… writhing together on the large bed. Severus tried to get a look at the faces, but all he could see was dark hair, much like his own, and very pale skin. Looking at the smaller of the two, he could make out similar dark hair, an odd lightning bolt shaped scar on the man’s forehead, and green eyes the color of smoky emeralds. Severus felt a shock of desire race through his body, so strong, so sudden, at the sight of those brilliant green eyes. In an instant, it was over, and he was back at the table in the Leaky Cauldron with Alexander, eyes clenched shut, panting, and feeling like he had just been chased by a Chinese Fireball around Diagon Alley.

Harry felt the nudge at his mind. He frowned. The feeling wasn’t bad, per se, but it was unsettling. Memories of magic flew through his mind, and suddenly, he was remembering a bedroom, watching two men stroke and slide against each other. He could not make out a face for the larger man, but he saw the younger clearly. It was his real self. He started, and concentrated on ending the memory.

When he came back to himself, Harry saw that Severus was sitting across from him, drenched in sweat, fighting to catch his breath, and with his eyes screwed tight against the dim light in the room. Anger rose within him as he realized that the other man had something to do with what just happened.

“What the HELL was that?”

**************

Albus sat in his study, stroking the feathers on Fawkes back as he thought about what had happened that day. Poor Mr. Potter. To lose his parents at such an early age. If only he could stop that somehow, but he knew that would change things drastically, and possibly make Riddle even stronger in the future. The poor boy seemed to experience so much loss. Parents, friends, godfather. Albus sat up suddenly. There was something he could do to help, however. With that in mind, he stepped to the fireplace and reached for the jar of floo powder. He tossed a handful into the fire, and called out, “Minerva McGonagall’s office”.

Minerva jumped slightly when she heard her lover’s voice ring through from the fireplace. She wasn’t expecting him for another hour. Oh, but he was such a randy old goat. She couldn’t count the numbers of meals she had missed because the man just couldn’t contain himself. She smiled up at him as he stepped through into her office. “Albus, I wasn’t expecting you this early. I still have an hour left to go on my office time.”

“Yes, Minnie. I know. There is something I need you to do for me before we retire for the night.” He paused to take in the magnificent woman in front of him. Damn. If it wasn’t such a necessity, he would just leave it off until later, possibly tomorrow. That woman could get his blood rushing south faster than anything. His gaze raked across her, imagining how she would look later. Oh, tonight they would definitely have to “have a meeting” in his office. That desk would never be the same again. “Ah, I, uh, oh hell, woman.” With a muffled exclamation, he grabbed Minerva by her shoulders and pulled her roughly against him, his mouth instinctively finding hers. After a short moment, Minerva let him in, reveling in the taste of her lover. Lemon. He did so love the tart candies. Albus broke the kiss, and leaned his forehead against hers. “What you do to me should be an Unforgivable. You know that, right?”

Minerva giggled. “Oh, Albus. You are impossible. Now, what did you need?”

Albus dropped his hands from her shoulders and took a couple of steps back toward the fireplace. “I need Mr. Potter, Ms, Evans, Mr. Black, and Mr. Lupin to join me in my office as soon as possible. I have some things I need to go over with them.”

“I’ll have them meet you there in ten minutes. Is there anything else, dear?”

Albus started to shake his head, then stopped. He turned and leered at her lustily. “Yes, don’t bother changing tonight. And join me in my office instead of me coming here. I have an idea…”

***************

Severus finally stopped shaking. This was not good. He looked across the table at the angry man and swallowed. Magic crackled around him, so much so that the other patrons of the bar were swarming the exits. He tried to answer Alexander, but he couldn’t get a sound out of his dry throat. His hand quavered as he reached for a glass of water. Gulping down the cool liquid, he realized just what he had done. He hung his head as he set the glass down on the table.

“Alexander, I’m, well, I apologize. I should not have done that. It was very wrong.”

Harry felt a little of his anger leave him. “Damn right it was wrong! Now, what did you do, and why?”

“I wanted to know if you were actually telling the truth. In my experience, truth is relevant. Since we are, or were, going to be sharing accommodations, I wanted to know what kind of person you are. What I did was called ‘Legilimency’. It is a branch of magic involving the practice of extracting emotions and memories from another person's mind. Again, I apologize.”

“You can do that?” Harry was in awe. Suddenly calm, his magic was once again contained. “Can you help me recover my memories? That would be brilliant.”

“You’re not angry?” Severus felt utter confusion. He was sure that just a moment ago, the young man was ready to annihilate him. Now, he was asking him to do it again?

“I was..am. You are not to do that again unless you ask permission first, or if I ask you to. But, if it can help me regain my memories, I think I can put aside my anger.” Harry flashed a small smile.

“Of course, Alexander. I would be happy to help.” He was relieved. “Now, let’s finish our meal and get back to Hogwarts.”
