Chapter 7

Draco left the library after checking if someone saw him. He was looking forward to their usual routines of study and then read a good book. They were almost finished reading Romeo and Juliet, and he had another book in mind when they had finished this one, which was also a book after a muggle writer.

When Harry, Ron and Ginny left the library a few hours later, Hermione ran to her common room to meet Draco. The whole time she had been with her friends she had wished that Draco was there with her, and her friends could get along with Draco.

*Maybe one day* she thought, but knew it wasn’t very likely.

When she entered the common room she saw a table with two dishes, candlelight, and baby pink roses. There was no light turned on in there just the fireplace, and the candlelight, and Hermione was touched by Draco’s efforts to make a romantic night for the two of them. She could hear Barry White singing in the background *I can’t get enough of your love * and as she stood there, Draco came up behind her and hugged her tight.

“you didn’t have to go to all that trouble just for me” Hermione said

“I know” Draco said “ I just wanted one romantic night for us. Do you want to dance”

Hermione put his hand in his, and he let her away from the table and to the middle of the floor, and as Barry white started to sing another song, she could hear Draco sing along

“ the first, the last, my everything. And the answer to all my dreams, you’re my sun, my moon, my guiding star, my kind of wonderful, that’s what you are. I know there’s only, only one like you, there’s no way they could have made two, you’re all I’m living for, your love I’ll keep for evermore. You’re the first, the last, my everything”

Hermione got tears in her eyes as he sang that to her, because she saw he meant everything he sang, she got to her toes and kissed him, they kissed each other until they couldn’t breath anymore, the music long forgotten. Draco led Hermione to the table and let her sit down, walked back to the kitchen and got the meal he had repaired for them. He was a great cook, and he had learned from the houselfs, and the maids at Malfoy manor, because his father didn’t think it would suit a man to cook. When he had put the dishes on the table, he took the champagne from the cooler and poured into their glasses, and they talked about everything between heaven and earth while they ate and had the time of their lives. Then Draco stood up took the dishes to the kitchen, and returned with a chocolate soufflé and put it on the table and sat down again, and watched as Hermione ate her soufflé and saw when she bit something hard, and watched her take something out of her mouth, and her shocked expression when she saw that it was a ring. Draco stood up and walked to her, then got to his knees and took the ring out of Hermione’s hand and took her left hand in his.
“Hermione Granger” he began “would you give me the honor of becoming my wife”

He looked hopeful in her eyes. Hermione had thought that the night couldn’t have been better when the desert came, but was proven wrong and looked shocked in his eyes as Draco was on his knees before her with the most beautiful ring she had ever seen in his hands waiting for her answer.

“YES. Of course” Hermione said with tears leaking down her eyes.

Draco put the ring on her finger and their lips met in a passionate kiss. And when they grasped for air, Draco took Hermione’s hand and led her to the sofa where Hermione sat in Draco’s lap, with her head on his shoulder and looked at the ring. It was a silver diamond ring with a big white diamond in the shape of a heart and around it there were green diamonds.

“the ring has been in my family for many generation and I was to give it to the girl I wanted to marry” Draco said

“what do you think everybody will think about us being engaged” Hermione said

“well, at first everybody will be shocked” Draco said “ do you want a big wedding in a church and everything?”

“it’s every girls dream, but I just want to be married to the man I love, it doesn’t matter if it is in a church or with a judge in the county’s office” Hermione said.

“well, I was thinking” Draco began “what if we got married before the Christmas dance and were announced as a married couple instead of just a girlfriend/boyfriend”

“when should we do it then” Hermione asked

“isn’t there a Hogsmead trip next weekend ?” Draco asked her

“yes” sha answered

“well we could do it then, I’ll get the papers that we need, and an hour before the ceremony begins you can find a dress and flowers and stuff like that, and I get my things” Draco said

“but who will be our best man, and bridesmaid?” Hermione asked

“you can tell your friends if you want, but wont they try to stop us” Draco asked

“I don’t think Ginny, or Harry would, but I don’t know about Ron” Hermione said

“then you tell them, and I know whom I will ask to be best man” Draco said.

“who might that be” she asked

“well you will get to know, once he has said yes” Draco told her.

“ok. Ok. But we need to get down to dinner so nobody will know about us yet.” Hermione said

“yes. Lets go” Draco said and let Hermione stand up so he could stand up.

“I’ll bring Harry and Ginny here to tell them, will you be here ?”

“of course, I’ll get here a few moments before you, and be in the sofa” Draco said

“thank you” Hermione said and kissed him

When Hermione arrived at her house table non of her friends were there, but she didn’t have to wait long till they would come to join her.

When Harry, Ginny and Ron came and took their seats next to Hermione and when Harry and Ginny saw the ring they were gonna ask her if she was engaged, but Hermione gave them a warning glance, and she leaned to Harry, which sat next to her, and whispered to him that she would tell him and Ginny in the common room after dinner, and if they could come just the two of them, not with Ron, and Harry agreed to it.

When they had finished eating, Hermione saw Draco go to get to the common room before her, and stood up herself, looked at them and said goodbyes, and walked to the common room. When she got there Draco stood in there and she walked to his arms to get some comfort from him before her friends came. When Hermione heard the knock on the painting, Draco let her go and went to sit in one of the leather chairs that could hide him.

“so Hermione, what’s up with the ring?” Ginny said “are you engaged?”

“well, right to the topic I see” Hermione stated “ and to answer your question, yes I’m engaged to my boyfriend, and I’m going to marry him this Saturday in Hogsmead.”

“so soon” Harry asked “and can I ask who it is that you are going to marry on Saturday”

“well, that is the reason I asked only you and Ginny to come alone, not with Ron. I know he wouldn’t except it and would tell everyone before we were ready” Hermione stated

“well, he wouldn’t have anything against it unless it was Malfoy that you’re going to marry” Harry said and gave a small laugther.

When Hermione didn’t say anything Harry began to say “no, no, no. you’ve got to be kidding me Hermione”

“no I’m not. We are going to get married on Saturday and I just wanted your blessings, and I wanted Ginny to be my maid of honor, or at least to sign it along with Draco’s best man “

“so when did this proposal happen” Ginny asked.

“just an hour before dinner, when I got here from the library there was a candle light dinner and music was playing. He took my hand and walked me to the middle of the room and we danced, and he sang to me. It was so romantic, then we ate and talked about everything, then after he came with desert, a chocolate soufflé and the ring was inside it, and when I found it he went down on one knee and asked me, and I said yes.” Hermione said with a happy smile on her lips.

“wow” Ginny said “can I see the ring”

Hermione showed her the ring and Ginny thought that it was the most beautiful ring that she had seen, and congratulated Hermione. Harry looked closely at Hermione, then congratulated her too. He looked around and asked Hermione where Draco was.

“well, he has been here the whole time, and listen to what we said, he was here for me if you hadn’t accepted it so good, he would have came to protect me” Hermione said, and then walked to the chair that Draco was sitting in, and took his hand and made him walk with her to her friends.

“well, I’ve heard that congratulations are in order” Harry said to Draco

“yes” Draco said and looked at Hermione with love in his eyes, and both Ginny and Harry saw the love between the two people standing in front of them.

“yes, congratulations both of you” Ginny said “ but I think that Harry and I should go, we’ll see you tomorrow Hermione”

“ok. Bye” Hermione said to her friends. “that went well”

“yes. Better than we hoped for” Draco said. “hey I’ve got to ask Harry something, I’ll be back in a few minutes” he ran to catch Harry and Ginny.

“hey Harry, can I talk to you for a minute?” Draco said

Harry looked at Draco, nodded, and told Ginny that he would catch her in a minute”

“so what do you want” Harry asked

“well, since you are Hermione’s best friend, and I have none. I wanted to ask you if you could maybe consider to be my best man, to please Hermione.” Draco said “you don’t have to answer right away, but I would appreciate if you would answer me before next Saturday” then Draco left a very surprised Harry, and walked to his common room to meet Hermione for their every night routine of reading a book before they went to bed.

“so what book is it now” Hermione asked Draco and cuddled closer to him.

“it’s called “the secret garden” Draco said.

“oh. That’s nice” Hermione said “but what was it that you asked Harry when you ran after him earlier?”

“well, that will be revealed when I get the answer” Draco said, and began to read.

At the same time in another common room, Ginny and Harry sat close together and talked in silence.

“so what did he ask you” a very curious Ginny asked Harry.

“he asked me if I would consider to be his best man” Harry said

“and what did you say” Ginny asked him

“well I couldn’t answer him because he left” Harry said.

“what are you gonna answer him” Ginny asked

“well since Hermione is our best friend I think I’m gonna accept it. Maybe there is also more to Draco than we have seen so far” Harry said. “I mean, since Hermione is in love with him, there must be something more to him, she’s smarter than that to fall for a guy that doesn’t love her.”

“yes. You’re right.” Ginny said “ so we are going to help them with everything, to hide their marriage to everyone until the Christmas dance. Well, that shouldn’t be so hard. The ball is just two weeks away. By the way do you know anything about the opening scene?”

“no. I think it’s a secret to everyone but the heads” Harry said.

“I guess you’re right” Ginny said. “well I think that we should get to bed. It has been a long day”

And so they went to bed, just as every other person in the castle. Unless the three teachers in the headmasters office, which had seen the ring on Hermione’s finger and smiled. Their plan was better than they had expected. Dumbledore bid McGonagall and Snape goodnight and at last everyone in the castle was asleep.
