Life Got In The Way
A/N: I'm starting to really love writing this story. I really am thankful for all the reviews. This is not the end of this story. There's so much left of it. Thanks again for the reviews and please don't forget to review. A special treat, an extremely long chapter. Hope you enjoy it!
Yeah and apathy grows quietly
Where rapture used to fly
Oh and promises and certainty
Have left love here to die
Wont you stay
And dont let this one fall away
And I wanted you so much
Just like I do right now
I wanted us to be the one
The poets write their books about
I wanted it to last
I wanted to grow old
But life got in the way
(Life Got In The Way-Sister Hazel)
They had stayed together all night in each other’s embrace. They cried all night long. They had waited so long for that moment and it was taken away from them.
The next morning Hermione got up and prepared breakfast for them. She had decided to stay, until the wedding was over. She couldn’t help but cry every time she saw Harry or when he touched her. The remainder of the day was spent in relative silence. It wasn’t until that Harry couldn’t take it anymore that he finally decided to talk to Hermione, but she was in no mood to listen.
She had just gotten out of the shower. She had to meet Ginny at Hogsmeade that day for the fitting. There he was sitting on her bed waiting for her to come out. When she opened the adjoining bathroom door steam filtered into her room. Harry looked up at her. She was beautiful. She was more beautiful than anything he’d ever seen in his life. His voice caught in his throat.
She looked at him with the same amazement that he had for her. She smiled slightly knowing that Harry was unnerved at the sight of her. Things were slowly going back to normal. They were friends. They would always be friends. That wasn’t going to change. They both knew it.
It’s just that they didn’t just want to be friends. They wanted to be more than friends. They wanted to be more than lovers. They wanted to be each other’s everything.
She just cocked a brow and looked at him playfully. No, she didn’t forget. She couldn’t forget. Every time she looked into his mesmerizing eyes, she would hurt, she would remember.
He looked up at her coming out of the steaming bathroom. She looked so seductive. He wanted her. He wanted to pin her against the wall and shag her brains out.
As if sensing his thoughts, she sat so close to him that he could feel her breath. She placed her head on his shoulder and her hair tickled his nose. “I love you,” he whispered into her hair. “I’ll always love you.” His eyes pleaded with her to told her one last time.
After the fitting, she would go back to the Ministry and he wouldn’t see her until the wedding rehearsal. She threw her inhibitions out the window. She leaned in and kissed him softly. Tears were flowing down her cheeks. She got on his lap and straddled him. She grabbed the hem of his shirt and pulled it over his head. It took his glasses along with it and tossed it to the side. Her wet hair stuck to her back and her hands roamed his face.
She wanted to memorize ever touch, every kiss. She wanted to memorize the feel of his lips on her, the taste of his skin. She never wanted to stop. Her hands roamed his chest and she pulled his boxers down. They never broke the kiss. Their tongues invading each other’s mouths. Hermione gently started stroking him. He moaned into her mouth. It wasn’t until she felt Harry’s hands on her breasts that she realized that she was naked.
His touch felt so good and warm. Passion was radiating from him. He thumbed her already hardened nipples and kissed her harder. She didn’t stop stroking him. She felt a wetness on the tip and spread it around. He grabbed her ass as he lifted her up. She crossed her legs behind his back.
Before she knew it she was pressed against the wall with her legs wrapped around him. She could feel his hard dick resting on her ass. He stepped back a little and plunged into her, over and over again. She met his rhythm and he started sucking on her neck leaving bruises. This wasn’t soft and gentle. It was rough and hard.
They knew they didn’t have a lot of time with each other. They wanted to savor each touch. Harry looked up at her. Her eyes were shut tightly and she was whimpering an ‘I love you.’ She had ecstasy written all over her face. He tried to memorize each contortion and he knew that she was like a drug that he couldn’t live without.
He felt that she was close to cumming and he whispered in her ear, “Cum for me Hermione.” That set her off. She dug her nails into his shoulders, drawing blood and came hard. He sight of Hermione cumming for him was enough for him. He bit down on her shoulder leaving teeth marks and came inside her.
He was still inside her when he heard the apparition crack. Hermione’s eyes widened in fear. Harry whispered a quick locking spell. It gave time for Harry and Hermione to get dressed. She wrapped the towel around her and stepped outside of her room.
“Herms? Harry?” Gods she hated that nickname. She wanted to beat Ron for it.
“Ron? What’re you doing here?” She turned her back to him to cast a charm on herself to shield the marks that Harry left behind.
“I just wanted to make sure you were ok.” he said softly.
“As you can see Ronald, I’m fine. Well I have to get ready to meet Ginny.” she turned back to her room.
“Where’s Harry?” that stopped her in her tracks.
She kept her back turned to him, “He went to get some groceries.”
Ron was silent. “Oh, if you see him, tell him I came by?”
“Yes Ronald. I will.” He apparated out.
Hermione stepped back into her room and Harry grabbed her waist and kissed her passionately. She let go of the towel that was wrapped around her and plunged her hands into his hair bringing his body closer to hers.
Minutes later their frenzied kissing slowed down to a soft pecks on the lips. Hermione was naked before him. He nuzzled into her neck and held her tightly.
“Is this the end?” he asked softly
“Maybe. You’re not a cheat Harry and neither am I.” She stroked his hair. After a minute, “I have to go.” She gently pushed him away and kissed him lightly.
Harry walked out of the room to let Hermione dress. When she came out he had already showered and changed. She wore dark jeans and a tank top with a black jumper over it with high heeled boots. He thought she looked gorgeous.
He looked liked a bum next to her. He preferred muggle clothing. He had the same colors that she did. It was if they coordinated. He smiled at her that same cheeky grin that he held for her since their first year. HE couldn’t believe that this was Hermione Granger, know it all Hermione. She was beautiful. Her hair was like silk and her smile light up the darkest corners of his heart light up.
Her caramel eyes glowed, for him. It would always be for him. He knew that what he did to her was unforgivable, but he was a man of honor. He had to do what was right and not what he wanted. He did want a family, he would just have to settle with someone else as the mother and not his Hermione.
She entwined her fingers in his and smiled up at him. His raven hair was wet and no amount of product could tame it. He had forgone his glasses and wore contacts. It was something that Parvati and Lavender had turned him on to after the war. She didn’t really care too much for his contacts, but he did look much younger.
They had silently decided to apparate to Hogsmeade together. When they got there, the Daily Prophet and their reporters were there. He pushed her behind him and they made their way over the Madame Isabella’s Bridal Shoppe. It made Harry queasy just walking in to that place.
He saw Ginny’s flaming red hair. She was talking to Luna who was now engaged to Ron. Ginny waved to Hermione from inside the shoppe and motioned for her to come in. She saw Harry and she had a frown on her face. He kissed Hermione on the cheek and told her that he was going to the joke shop. Since he was a silent partner in ht business, it was in his best interest to look in on Fred and George every now and then.
Hermione stepped inside and was bombarded with people coming to her aide. “Oh you’re Hermione Granger! It’s such an honor to have to in here Mademoiselle.” Madame Isabella exclaimed happily. “I’ve been expecting you! We didn’t think that you would....Oh well never mind.” she dragged her back to where Ginny and Luna were.
“Excusez-moi Madame, mais qu’alliez vous dire?” Hermione asked her.
Madame Isabella whipped her head around astonished at her French. She smiled, “Rien Mademoiselle. Je n’ai dit rien.” Hermione shook her head in dismay.
When they had reached Ginny and Luna they were already looking at the bridesmaid dresses. Luna hugged Hermione tightly and whispered something in her ear. It wasn’t until Ginny was talking to her that she registered what Luna had said.
“Hello? Earth to Hermione.” Ginny snapped her fingers in front of her as if to snap her out of her trance.
“Huh? Yes Ginny?” she looked over at Luna. Luna looked a little flushed and smiled at Hermione. She pulled Luna over to her when Ginny was talking to Madame Isabella.
“I’m sorry,” Luna started. “Ron, told me last night. I just...I know it must be hard for you.” Luna looked at Hermione with sadness in her eyes. “I always thought that it would be you and Harry. I never thought it would end up being Ginny, but he’s doing the honorable thing. He’s doing what he thinks is right.” She had become so wise. Yes, she still held her fascination for creatures unknown, but she had grown. She had aged. She was different. Hermione smiled at the thought of Ron having a grown up effect on her.
“Thanks Luna. It’s ok. We talked about it, sort of. I agree with his decision,” she said simply.
Ginny and Madame Isabella turned to them. “So what do you think? I wanted the color to be that of Harry’s eyes with silver lining. It’s beautiful isn’t it?” Ginny asked.
Hermione laughed. She really laughed a full belly laugh. She was holding her stomach and had tears in her eyes. “Oh Merlin. You’re not serious, are you?” She said in between laughs. She looked at Ginny who was turning as red as her hair. Hermione pointedly stopped.
“What is so funny?” Ginny asked angrily.
“Nothing, just look at your colors!” Luna looked at the green silk and laughed too. She wasn’t as bad as Hermione.
“Ginerva Weasley! How did you not recognize Slytherin colors?” Luna said as she was giggling.
Ginny gasped. Her face fell and she has tears in her eyes. “Oh no! I didn’t even....I just thought...I should’ve...Oh no!” Ginny was shaking. She looked at Hermione with mixed emotions, there was anger there, but also fear.
“It’s alright Mademoiselle Weasley. We shall keep the design but just change colors. Gold? That’s a very natural color.” With a flick of her wand the green silk ball gown with a silver corseted top turned gold with a cram silk bottom.
Hermione gasped. It was beautiful. Tears started brimming in her eyes and Madame Isabella noticed. She quickly ushered her into a changing room for her fitting. When she went in, she let her tears run freely. A small sad smile formed on Madame Isabella’s face. She didn’t like to see a War heroine fall apart like that, but she was expecting it. She hugged Hermione tightly and told her that everything would be ok.
Madame Isabella helped her with the dress which fit her beautiful. The strapless dress clung to all her curves exquisitely. She looked beautiful in it. Madame Isabella tied her hair up so that her neck was exposed and her creamy skin glowed. “Vous êtes trés belle. Vous serez plus beau que la jeune mariée.”
Hermione looked at herself in the mirror. Tears started brimming in her eyes again. She breathing raggedly and smiled at Madame Isabelle. “Merci, Madame. Je ne suis pas belle.” She didn’t feel pretty.
She held the curtain for Hermione to step though. She couldn’t move. She was frozen. After catching her breath, she stepped outside. She looked at Ginny for approval. Her mouth was open in shock.
“Hermione,” Luna gasped. “You look beautiful.” Luna noted.
“Oh it’s just a dress.” she blushed. It felt like fourth year all over again. She smiled at Luna.
“It’s you in that dress, Hermione. It really does look good on you.” Ginny agreed. There was a pang on jealousy in her statement, but she brushed it off. After all, it was her who was marrying Harry not, Hermione.
“Thank you.” She quickly spun around for them and went back into the changing room. After they all had their turns, she and Luna stepped out of the shoppe. Ginny stayed behind to talk about something or another, she wasn’t really sure.
They went to the Three Broomsticks to grab some butterbeer before they left. Hermione turned to the direction of the joke shop and saw Draco Malfoy talking to Harry. They were laughing. Hermione was taken aback.
She turned to Luna, “When in Merlin’s name did that happen?”
Luna looked at the two of them and said, “Oh that. I guess it’s because they work together. They’ve come to an understanding.”
Hermione cocked a brow, “Oh. Things have changed haven’t they?”
“Yes Hermione, they have. Promise you’ll be around more?” Luna looked at her sadly. She just nodded.
The boys spotted them on the other side of the street. Draco looked at Hermione strangely. He smiled warmly at her and she smiled back. She couldn’t forget the things he put her through, but she forgave him a long time ago.
He came to Grimmauld place after Dumbledore’s death and beaten and bleeding. He had told them that Snape was dead and that Deatheater’s tried to kill him because he refused to take the mark. Obviously no one believed him. After Hermione administered the truth potion, they had begun to believe him. They had threatened to kill his mother, the only one who loved him. They had threaten to kill Snape, the only father he ever had.
Lucius ‘Crucioed’ him and put him under the ‘Imperious’ and order him to kill Snape. He couldn’t and so they turned on him. He fled, but not before Snape told him to seek refuge with the Order. He was going to come to them eventually, Dumbledore knew of it and so did Lupin and Arthur Weasley. They had accepted him and the knowledge he had brought with him.
He asked Hermione for a moment of her time to apologize for his past mistakes and she forgave him. Harry didn’t trust him. He wouldn’t let anyone near him. Hermione slowly warmed up to him. She could remember Harry telling her that she forgave too easily. ‘How ironic!’ she thought.
Draco and Harry walked over to her and Luna. Harry noticed the redness in her eyes and his heart hurt seeing her so sad. Her hair was in a messy pony tail. She smiled at the both of them.
Draco extended a hand out to Hermione. “Good to see you Granger. Looking really good.” He whistled at her. She smacked his arm.
“You too Malfoy. How are you?” she shook his hand and smiled at him. “I hear you and Harry work together now?” she looked at Harry. He looked so good. His hair was wild and she loved it. She just wanted to run her fingers through it. Harry stood next to her with his arm around her waist. Draco shifted uncomfortably, but pretended not to notice.
“I’m good. I have to admit, he’s not a bad bloke, once you get past his hero complex!” he said jokingly. “Where’s Ginny?” He called her Ginny, not Weaselette. Hermione noticed and she looked at him, questioning him.
“She’s still at that shop.” Luna piped in. She turned to Hermione, “I really do have to go. Ron and I have a meeting with a wizard realtor!” she said excitedly.
“So you’re finally moving out of that dump you live in now?” Draco said jokingly.
“It’s not a dump. Yes, it’s small, but we managed. Now that Ron’s playing for the Cannon’s we can afford something much bigger.” Luna’s eyes lit up.
“How much bigger?” Harry asked.
“Oh, a house bigger silly. We are getting married soon and so we need a place where we can shag all the time without the fear of being caught or embarrassment You know Fred and George, they love playing jokes on poor Ronald.”
She always had a way with words. They all laughed, not at her, but at how she changed and yet remained the same. It was ironic that Ron and Luna were getting married. Ron was dating and shagging Hermione until several weeks before the final battle. They had decided to break-up. There was no spite or hate between them, she just noticed that Ron was madly in love with Luna and not her. Ron noticed that she was in love with Harry and not him. It was simple yet so complicated. They would never confess to each other that they knew their true feelings. It was good between them, the five of them. It was soon after the War that Ron proposed to Luna, but she refused saying that she wanted him to get on with his career as a Quidditch player first and that she wanted to finish at Hogwarts. They had loved each other and they knew that they would end up together so neither of them pushed it.
Ron was a gentleman through and through. He was always there for her and took care of her when she was feeling ill, or down. He was there when her father never came back from Bulgaria. She loved him like no other, she would always love him.
Luna left them with smiles on their faces. Draco looked at Hermione and asked her out for lunch, for old times sake he added. She promised to meet him another time, she wouldn’t disappear anymore she said. Draco smiled at her and went off toward the tailor.
“Are you free?” Harry asked her without letting go of her waist.
“For you? All the time!” She giggled. Tears were still stinging in her eyes, but she pushed them back.
“Ok, let’s go. Close your eyes first. I want it to be a surprise.” He held her hand and she closed her eyes. They had apparated somewhere warm. She could hear cars. It was a Muggle city. She smelled bread. She knew that smell. She loved that smell.
Her eyes popped open, “Paris!” She hugged Harry tightly. “Lunch in Paris?” she kissed him softly on the lips.
He took her hand and he led to this read building that read ‘Resturante Aux Lyonnais.’ They walked inside. A waiter greeted them.
“Monsieur Potter. Bonjour. We have your table ready,” the waiter said with a thick accent.
“Merci, Guy.” The waiter led them through the maze of crowded tables. People were looking at them and smiling. They were whispering to each other.
“C’est Hermione Granger.” She heard one woman whisper. “Elle est tres belle, n’est pas?”
“Si! Elle est tres intelligente aussi. Elle l’a sauve de Voldemort,” another man proclaimed.
A little boy came up to her and pulled on her black jumper. She let go of Harry’s hand. She turned to face the boy, “Bonjour. Comment ca va?” she asked him.
“Oh. Je vais tres bien Madameoisele. Et vous.” He smiled at her. He reminded of her of Harry with his green eyes.
She bent down to him.“Moi aussi. Comment t’appelles tu?”
“Henri Des Cartes. C’est ma mere et mon pere.” He pointed to his parents in the crowd. He pulled out at notebook and gave it to her. “Monsieur Potter l’a deja signe. Le signerez-vous s’il vous plait Mademoiselle Granger?” he pleaded with her.
She flipped through his book. She smiled when she saw the names listed. Remus, Tonks, Ron, the twins, the Patil sisters then most prominently Harry. She signed on the same page as Harry did and made a little note to him. She handed him the book back. He thanked her and ran to his parents. People smiled at her.
“This is not wizard restaurant, Harry.” He kissed her on her forehead.
“No, but they cater to Wizards. They have for over a century.” He took her hand in his again and led her to the table.
They ate in silence, smiling at each other. It was peaceful and relaxing. He had told her that he had loved this place since Draco took him to lunch here several months ago. She questioned him about his relationship with the younger Malfoy. He told her that he believed that Draco had changed. He was fine Auror and a good friend. They were friends. They would eat lunch when they could. They would go to Muggle movies when they could. He hadn’t replaced Ron, now that he was busy with Quidditch and Luna, but they were all good friends.
Harry paid the bill and took her to the ally behind the restaurant. He pulled her close to him and kissed her hungrily. “I wanted to do that since we left th flat.”
She kissed him back with just as much hunger. She started sucking on his lower lip and he her upper and it was perfect. She leaned into him and told him that they had to go. He reluctantly let go of her and they apparated back to Hogsmeade.
They walked silently in the village and came across a jewelry shop. Hermione loved to window shop. A beautiful antique platinum drop necklace with matching earrings caught her eye. It was littered with diamonds, large and small. The earring were chandeliers and they glittered in the sunlight. Harry pretended not to notice and dragged her way from the shop.
They looked for Ginny, but she was no where in sight. They apparated back to the flat to find Ron and Ginny watching the tele.
“Where did you go?” Ginny exclaimed.
“I took her to lunch in this Muggle city.” Ginny didn’t really like Muggle cities. She could careless about them, but since becoming a chaser for the Puddlemere she had visited many Muggle cities.
Ron looked at Hermione and Harry. Hermione cleared her throat. “Well, actually, I have to be off soon. I have to report to the Ministry tomorrow and there’s a lot of paperwork I need to finish.”
Harry had tears in his eyes. He wasn’t going to see her, not until the wedding, but he wanted to see her before. “You never told us where you lived.” Harry told her.
“Yes I know. I’m not really allowed to, but since you’re my closest friends...” she thought for a moment. “Muggle London. I live in Muggle London.”
“How far away from here?” Harry asked her.
“Not too far.” she said quietly.
“How far Hermione?” He asked again angrily.
“Told you Harry. Not that far!” she raised her voice in return.
“So you were close to me all this time and you didn’t even want to stop by?” Harry was fuming.
“Well if you bothered to answer any of my letters then maybe I would’ve!” she yelled back.
Ron and Ginny were just watching them. Whatever truce they had called when Ginny was away was forgotten. “I can’t believe you! We could’ve fixed this sooner.” Harry yelled.
Hermione opened her in shock. Tears were flowing freely and Harry moved to hug her. They didn’t notice the others in the room. “We could’ve fixed this sooner,” he whispered into her hair.
She held on to him as if she was afraid he would disappear. “I know. It’s no one’s fault, but our own.” She stepped back from him and glanced around the room in search of the letter she wrote just days before. He looked at her and smiled.
“Safe.” he mouthed to her
Their little outburst was done with and everything was back to normal, whatever that was. Hermione went to the guest room and wrote her address on a piece of parchment and gave him the floo password. It was love.
