Defying Gravity

Harry burst into the Library and began to search for Ron and Hermione. They had been there nearly every day since the second Task, studying for finals and trying to research what the mass singing was all about.

He wasn’t expecting Draco Malfoy to be sitting with them.
Sure he and Draco had become friends, but he never in a million years expected Ron and Hermione to accept Malfoy as one of their own. His grin grew brighter.
“Hey guys, any luck?”
“No,” Hermoine sighed, “and after a dozen books we’ve given up.”
“Yeah, we still have to study for final exams, unlike some people.” Ron said huffily, mock scowling at Harry.
Harry grinned sheepishly. “I’ll just forge ahead then, eh?”

After about an hour Harry felt someone tap him on his arm, he looked up to see Draco, a strange expression in the blond boy’s eyes.
“Can I speak to you Harry? In private?” He asked softly, a pleading look on his face.
They got up and trouped off to a darker corner of the Library.
“So,” Harry began, “what’s this all about?”
“Well, as you are probably aware, I went home over winter hols.” Draco started, he was fidgety and nervous, very unlike himself. Harry nodded encouragingly. “Well what you don’t know was that the Death Eaters and the Dark Lord were there as well, and....and....oh Harry, don’t hate me, please!” He pleaded desperately and Harry had a sudden hot swooping sensation deep in his guts.
“And, what, Draco? What happened?” He asked quietly. Draco, looking quite green and blinking suspiciously, began rolling up his sleeve.

Slowly the Dark Mark was revealed, fresh and raw and horrific on Draco’s pale forearm.

“How...how could you?” Harry asked quietly. Then seized by a powerful, dark emotion, took Draco by the front of his robes and slammed him against the bookshelves. “HOW COULD YOU?!” He shouted, shaking Draco slightly, infuriated by the lack of response he was getting. He forced himself to release the other boy and watched numbly as Malfoy slid down the bookcase until he was seated on the floor, his knees pulled up to his chest.
“I did it for you, Harry, for us.” He whispered, getting up slowly, pleading still written on his face. “Don’t you see? We could be so much more powerful this way.... there’s nothing we won’t be able to do.... no one could stop us!”

But all Harry had heard was Draco’s casual use of the word us.

“US?!” He yelled, grabbing hold of Draco once again. “What us is there Draco? May I remind you that you are currently with a certain Cedric BLOODY Diggory?!”
And that seemed to be all that was needed to spur Draco into action.

Dramatic music swelled.

“Harry! Why couldn’t you have stayed calm for once! Instead of flying off the handle! I hope you’re happy! I hope you’re happy now, I hope you’re happy how you hurt your cause forever! I hope you think you’re clever!”
“I hope you’re happy, I hope you’re happy too!” Harry retorted sharply. “I hope you’re proud how you would grovel in submission, to feed your own ambition!”
They squared off angrily, much the same as the very beginning of the year.
“So though I can’t imagine how, I hope you’re happy! Right now!”
Draco softened suddenly and reached out to his newest friend, one he desperately wanted to keep.
“Harry,” He pleaded, “listen to me. Just...say you’re sorry. You can still be with the Light Side, its what we’ve worked and waited for, you can have all you’ve ever wanted....”
He trailed off as Harry took the proffered hand.
“I know,” The Boy-Who-Continued-To-Live-Just-To-Piss-Off-Lord-Voldimort said quietly, leading Malfoy out. The music seemed to follow the boys.
“But I don’t want it. No. I can’t want it....anymore.”

He stopped. They were on the front steps of Hogwarts, looking out onto the grounds. Harry turned to Draco, singing earnestly now.

“Something has changed within me, something is not the same. I’m through with playing by the rules of someone else’s game. Too late for second-guessing. Too late to go back to sleep. It’s time to trust my instincts, close my eyes, and leap! Its time to try defying gravity! I think I’ll try defying gravity, and you can’t pull me down!”
Now it was Draco’s turn to grab Harry. “Can’t I make you understand? You’re having delusions of grandeur!” He sang urgently.
Harry merely shook him off and ran down the steps towards the lake. Draco had little choice but to follow.
“I’m through accepting limits, ‘cuz someone says they’re so. Some things I cannot change, but till I try, I’ll never know! Too long I’ve been afraid of losing love I guess I lost! Well if that’s love, it comes at much too high a cost!”

By now Draco had caught up with Harry at the lake’s edge.

“I’d sooner try defying gravity! Kiss me goodbye, I’m defying gravity! And you can’t pull me down.”
Now it was Harry’s turn to extend a hand in invitation.
“Draco...come with me. Think of what we could do...together!
Draco took Harry’s hand, smiling, and allowed himself to dream. Just for the moment at least.
“Unlimited. Together we’re...unlimited. Together we’ll be the greatest team there’s ever been. Draco...dreams the way we planned them.”
“If we work in tandem.” Draco sang slowly.
They grinned at each other.
“There’s no fight we cannot win, just you and me defying gravity. With you and I defying gravity! They’ll never bring us down.”
Harry had an eager look on his face. “Well? Are you coming?”
Draco pulled away, a sad smile on his face, it was time to come back to reality.
“I hope you’re happy...now that you’re choosing this.”
“You too.” Harry was looking like he may cry, but determined at the same time. He knew it would be this way.
“I hope it brings you bliss. I really hope you get it and you don’t live to regret it. I hope you’re happy in the end. I hope you’re happy...my...friend.”
Harry turned to the lake again, determined. “So if you care to find me, look to the western sky! As someone told me lately ‘everyone deserves a chance to fly’! And if I’m flying solo, at least I’m flying free. To those who ground me, take a message back from me. Tell them how I’m defying gravity! And soon I’ll match them renown.” He turned back to Draco, as intense as the blond had ever seen. “And nobody here and now, no wizard that there is or was, is ever going to bring me down!”
“I hope you’re happy!”
“Look at them, they’re wicked. Get them!”
“Bring me down!”
“No one mourns the wicked! So we have to bring them...”
“Ahhh....”
“Down!”
