After a leisurely breakfast, Severus and Hermione curled up together in Severus’ armchair. There was only really room for one, so Hermione was curled in his lap, her arms snaked about his neck and her fingers played with his hair. They were talking about potions, something that both of them loved. Severus was amazed at how she had progressed since school. She had told him that she was a healer, and he was particularly interested in the progress she has made with the lacertus potion, a potion that gave patients more strength, and therefore they healed quicker.

He held her, worrying about everything and anything. She had said, numerous times, that she didn’t care and that the past was the past, but Severus worried. His past haunted him, and he had never quite come to believe that evil would stay out of his life. Sure he could stay with Hermione, he could live in this dream, but who was to say how long it would last. He looked at her and sighed.

“What’s wrong Severus?” Hermione was worried. Merlin, this man had such strange mood swings, one moment he’s having a conversation about potions, the next he seems so depressed. She cupped his face with one hand and raised his head so that she was looking into his pool like eyes. Deep in them was sadness. He had such expressive eyes.

“Severus, I can tell there’s something wrong. Please, tell me…” She stopped as she noticed a solitary tear sliding down his cheek. Slowly she leant down and kissed it away. “You’re not the only one who went through hell, Severus. Harry and Ron have no time for me any more, I feel so alone too.” She began to weep with him.

“Hermione, I don’t want to hurt you. I’ve never shared my life with anyone and not hurt them. Even my mother, my sister.” the tears began to flow hard and fast from the both of them. “I know that given a chance we could be so happy together, but I just don’t want to make you hate me.” He buried his head in her chest and she held him close. She let him weep for a while, he needed it. Part of her was disturbed to see this strong, powerful man crying like a child. She pulled him closer to her.

“Why won’t you let me in? I care about you, I have for a very long time. You won’t hurt me, I trust you not to, and I‘ll never hate you.” He turned his head upwards, looking her straight in the eyes.

“Let me show you.” He said simply, and with a muttered incantation, she was shown all of the horrors he had endured, right from the beatings his father had given him as a child to the cruciatus curses Voldemort had subjected him to. She saw as he’d killed, then felt his loneliness, ten times worse than hers as he’d spent the rest of the war spying for the Order. He slipped from her mind and looked up at her, sorrow evident in his eyes. She just pulled him closer.

“That is the past, Severus. This is the present. You and me curled in a comfortable armchair after a hearty breakfast and a night of very satisfying sex.” She smiled, and he felt he couldn’t not smile. “Let me prove to you why you should be loved, why you are a good man.” She wiped away the tears that ran down his pale face and muttered “Leglimens.”

Severus saw it all, from her perspective he watched as he delivered his lessons, yes, he may have been snarky and vicious, but he had taught the students just as he wished he had been taught. He saw how he had sacrificed many things in the war against Voldemort, and how Hermione had seen him, as brave and selfless. He saw how he had fought during the final battle, and how he had looked in the hospital wing of Hogwarts after it was over, a great burn mark slashed across his face. As Hermione slipped from his mind, he turned to her with wonder written all over his face.

“I thought people hated me. I thought I was such a horrible person. You think I’m brave, and intelligent, and selflesss…”

Hermione smiled as he pulled her close to her and kissed her. Severus felt warm, funny… it dawned on him, he was happy. He had only really felt like this once. It had been the Christmas after his father had died, there were no arguments, no fighting. His mother, sister and himself had sat and eaten a beautiful Christmas meal and relaxed, enjoying each others’ company, just having a normal family Christmas. He had been twelve years old.

For the second time in his life, Severus Snape felt happy. He wasn’t sure he was willing to let this happiness slip away from him.
