Just Another Dinner
A/N- I know this chapter is short, but I wanted to make a bit of a segway between the last chapter and the one after this. I promise the next few will be more "meaty". Thanks for reading and reviewing. Please keep it up.

Hermione spent her day shut away in the room she shared with Ginny. She thought it best that she avoid people at this point, for fear of saying something harsh to anyone she cared for. She found that when she had many things on her mind she tended to become rather short tempered. And this was certainly one of those times for her. She couldn't help but think about what Molly had told her over breakfast.
Mrs. Weasley must have just been trying to make me feel better. Men certainly don't stare at me, and Sirius Black can't possibly think I'm the 'prettiest witch he knows'. She was certainly exaggerating when she told me that. It was sweet of her to try to calm my nerves, but it really hasn't helped.
Ginny had been in and out of their room on occasion, silently slipping in and out to avoid bothering Hermione. She had to admit she was worried about her friend. Hermione just sat on her bed with her knees tucked close against her. She looked deep in thought. Ginny had even brought lunch up for her, thinking that perhaps it would be best for her not to dine with everyone else, especially Sirius. But Hermione had barely touched her lunch, she was so preoccupied.
Hermione sighed, realizing that she would have to "face the world" this evening. Face Sirius, in particular. She knew Molly was just trying to give her a good evening by throwing the party, but she knew Molly hadn't thought about how much of a "social situation" this would be in the end. Normally social situations were no big deal, but this one kind of rubbed her the wrong way, if only because company would be forced on her.
She got up off her bed and ran her hands over her jumper, straightening out the little wrinkles before rummaging through her trunk for a warmer pair of socks. It was then that Ginny happened to pop her head in for a moment. "Hermione?" she asked tentatively.
"Yeah, Gin?" she answered as she pulled out a thicker pair of socks.
"Um, Mum says it's time for you to come down so we can start the party," she said nervously.
"Okay, I'll be down as soon as I get my socks and trainers on, alright?" Hermione told her, trying her best to sound upbeat and positive. Ginny nodded and headed back downstairs. Hermione put on her socks and shoes and then stood before the door, summoning her Gryffindor courage before heading downstairs.
Hermione found everyone sitting down at the table in the dinning room talking and chatting animatedly. She did her best to quietly slip into her place between Harry and Ron. However, she didn't slip in quietly enough because Molly then announced, "The birthday girl is here, now dinner can start."
Hermione blushed a brilliant red before beginning to fill her plate. For the most part it was like a normal dinner at number 12 Grimmauld Place. This time though, she stared a great deal at her plate, picked at her food, and didn't contribute to the conversation unless spoken to directly.
Harry noticed Hermione acting so withdrawn and leaned over close to her. "Mione, cheer up, things aren't that bad. Sirius may be sitting across from you, but he won't bite. At least try to act like you're enjoying things for Mrs. Weasley," he emplored her.
"You're right, Harry. This is more for her than it is me. I'll make the best of things and be my 'normal, happy self'," she said giving him a little smile.
"That's the Hermione I know." Harry shot her a brilliant smile before going back to his dinner.
Harry's right. I'm going to make this a nice night for everyone. After all, Mrs. Weasley went through a lot of trouble to do this for me, so I'm going to try to enjoy it, if only for her sake.
From then on it was dinner as normal. Laughing, talking, and enjoying dinner Hermione realized that she was indeed having a good time despite herself. It was nice pretending that things were normal once again, and that this was just another day for fun at the dinner table. She sighed for a moment. That's all this is... pretending.
