Hermione cleared her mind of all thought but the shape she wanted to be. She decided to start with something she knew well and invistioned a kneazle in her mind. When she opened her eyes she found herself much closer to the floor than she had been. She flexed experimentally. Her limbs were short and covered in snow white hair.
She leapt up onto her bed with some difficulty. The muscles of this new form were difficult to get used to but the book had informed her that she could only use forms with any ease if she had practiced in them so she had decided to try a different form every night.
Crookshanks hissed at the presence of a new cat. Hermione tried to make her mouth form words but only uttered soft mewing. She could speak cat. Crooks looked startled.
"Hermione what happened to you?" Hermione leapt back. Not only could she speak cat but she could understand it too. Hermione started to explain everything except why she was a morphi. Crookshanks listened with great interest to her explanation of what morphi were and when she was done he uttered a soft purr. "I think this may help you greatly. You must practice though." Hermione nodded her cat head but then she heard a knock at the door. She jumped and visualized herself and became human again just as Draco entered the room.
"Hermione we need to talk. You can't lock yourself away like this. I don't know what happened to you when you were captured but you have to be able to talk to your friends. Where are your friends anyway?" No one had offered an explanation as to why Harry and Ron were not at Hogwarts and everyone was curious. Hermione shrugged.
"They have things to do and I am not up to going with them. They will do fine on their own." Draco raised an eyebrow but didn't press the matter.
"Hermione why won't you let anyone help you?" He asked and Hermione was startled at the amount of concern in his voice. She shook her head.
"I can't Draco. Please leave me. I need my sleep." Draco shook his head stubbornly.
"Not until I get some answers." Hermione's temper flared.
"I have a right to keep what I want to myself!" Draco leapt up and backed away.
"Hermione what's happening to you?!" The next moment he had vanished out the door which slammed closed at a wave of Hermione's hand.
"Hermione." The voice was soft. Hermione realized that it was Crookshanks and she could now understand him even in her human form. She quickly worked out that after trying a form she must be able to speak and understand the language of the form.
"Yes" She answered.
"You should look in the mirror." Hermione, still fuming, stomped to the mirror. Why couldn't everyone leave her alone. She jumped as she caught sight of herself in the mirror. Her hair had become a mass of flames blowing in a nonexistant wind. Her eyes were glowing purple and the air around her crackled with magical energy. It was a moment later that Hermione realized that it wasn't only her hair that had changed but her looks. She had become much more fierce looking. She took deep breaths and calmed herself and her hair and face returned to normal.
Hermione's life had truely been turned upside down.
Over the next few days Draco kept his distance from Hermione giving her wary looks every time he passed her in the hallways. She had been experimenting with other forms every night. By the eighth day she knew how to function in the form of a kneazle, fox, mouse, dog, ferret, lizard, hedgehog, and badger. So far she hadn't left her room and on the ninth night she decided she was going to try becoming a bird.
Hermione didn't know why she chose a Phoenix but she found herself in that shape on that Saturday night. The muscles were different than anything she had tried. The form was light and easy to move in. Her arms felt funny in the winged shape. She flapped the wings hard and rose a few inches off the floor before falling back down. Crookshanks sniggered. She tried over and over again and finally she managed to stay in the air for a few seconds but her wings were tiering quickly not being used to such treatment and she had to stop.
It took three nights for Hermione to strenthen her wings enough but on Wednsday she found herself in the Phoenix form perched on her windowsill looking down at the ground. Hermione had never liked flying but she felt it was crucial to learn everything she could about animal forms and she also felt that she had to conquer her fears. She closed her eyes briefly and dropped off into the night. She snapped her wings open and began soaring around. Now she didn't have to flap her wings very often. The air currents around her kept her aloft. Suddenly She loved the feeling of gliding through the air. It was several hours before she felt herself tiring and flew back to her room. She didn't have time to change back, however, before Draco entered the room.
